More than 1,800 people have died in India’s heatwave in just one week. Most of the deaths have occured In central and southern areas where temperatures have soared to nearly 47 degrees Celsius melting some roads. Asphalt in New Delhi melted amid soaring temperatures: http://t.co/iqdX3oJ52T pic.twitter.com/YWV3N8ha1R— NYT Photo (@nytimesphoto) May 28, 2015 Authorities have advised people to stay out of the sun, cover their heads and drink plenty of water but poverty forces many to work despite the risks. “We cannot bear the heat even just standing there doing nothing, let alone working,” said road maintenance worker Paka Ram. “We know the government has warned people against this. But we need food. How are we supposed to eat if we stop working?” An overused electricity grid has left many living in the capital’s slums without power. “Life is very difficult, said one slum resident. “We have no water, no power, nor any other basic facilities.” Many people have flocked to cool off in water less than 30 degrees Celsius at one of Mumbai’s landmarks, the Gateway of India. “Y’all messed up; you do not come after a Texan,” says Rich Kent in a video posted on his Facebook page. “This will not be Baltimore. This will not be Ferguson. Do you understand me?” Earlier this week, Sharpton told USA Today that the Dallas chapter of his National Action Network (NAN) alerted him regarding the footage of then-police Cpl. Eric Casebolt manhandling 15-year-old Dajerria Becton and drawing his gun on two black teen boys following a pool party in a residential area last weekend. Some conservative outlets ran stories taking Sharpton’s comment as confirmation that he was headed to the city, but Sharpton has not issued any statements to that effect online. The NAN website currently has no events listed in McKinney, and Sharpton is slated to speak at an event in New York City. Kent took to the fundraising site GoFundMe seeking $1 million for what he called a “Counter Sharpton” rally http://www.rawstory.com/2015/06/texas-man-seeks-1-million-to-chase-al-sharpton-out-of-mckinney-even-though-hes-not-coming/comments/#disqus Less

Ukraine has problems of its own to contend with. But the country is still managing to shelter refugees – from far-flung war-torn places as well as those closer to home. An estimated 3,000 have come from abroad, like Mariana from Angola: “It’s like a war, you have to constantly fight for your rights. For example, regarding my skin colour it’s not everywhere you can find a job even if you have all the diplomas or the necessary qualifications”. The conflict in the east of Ukraine has had a huge impact. The figure of 3000 refugees is dwarfed by the estimated 1.2 million internally displaced: “We thought we would only be leaving Luhansk for a few weeks,” Tetyana Tkachenko told Euronews, “but we have stayed in Kyiv. Our parents are still there, life goes on there somehow. But where do we go back to — an unrecognized republic?” Money raised from selling goods at this charity fair will go towards supporting both refugees and the internally-displaced in Ukraine and helping them find work. It is also hoped the event will go some way towards building understanding and tolerance. Less

Video 1 of 4. I had myself videoed during sparring matches in a recent Tae Kwon Do tournament. The whole time I am marked with a red flag. The ring is operated by three high ranking judges, a scorekeeper and a time keeper. After we are bowed in, we spar for two minutes, unless seven points are reached. Leg checks (kick to area by outside of quad/hamstring) and all body kicks count as one point, head kicks as two points. Illegal kicks (below the belt with exception to leg checks) are counted as strikes, thus the opponent will be awarded one point per illegal strike. Leg checks must be rear leg, punches must be a cross - jabs are not awarded points. In order for points or strikes to be given, at least two of the three judges must witness the event; this is often a source of controversy as not all points or strikes are called. In the case of a tie the next point wins. Flags up = points Flags down = strikes Flags horizontal = nothing awarded I made this so I can study my sparring style, weaknesses, etc A special note: The goal of sparring is to simply score points using taekwondo techniques. Inflicting harm upon an opponent is disrespectful, injuries are no joke - hence the padding. When such events do occur, the degree of intentionality is determined by judges; accidents do happen. In some cases a warning may be given, a second warning results in disqualification. This is not my first time sparring. ENJOY Less

More than 1,200 migrants have arrived in Sicily after being rescued at sea by Norwegian and Irish vessels. According to the International Organisation for Migration more than 150,000 migrants have arrived in Europe via the Mediterranean sea route so far this year. It follows a deadly week for African migrants, after 40 people were feared drowned after their inflatable dinghy sank near the Libyan coast on Thursday. Most of those arriving safely on Italian territory come from Syria and Sub-Saharan Africa. Eritreans are the second largest group after Syrians to risk their lives crossing the Mediterranean. Eritrea has called for a UN probe into what they called the ‘abhorrant’ chain of human trafficking, as refugees flee from the country in an exodus largely blamed on human rights abuses. Less

More than 1,500 migrants landed on Italian shores on Monday, as the influx of desperate people fleeing conflict and poverty continues. Some 550 migrants were brought to shore in the Sicilian capital of Palermo, including children – among them dozens of unaccompanied minors. More than most, these youngsters face an uncertain future. Rescued by a Norwegian ship, almost 1,000 people arrived in Sardinia on Monday – also yearning for a fresh start. After difficult and dangerous journeys, more than 100,000 migrants have reached Italy so far this year by sea. The rise in migrants in the Mediterranean is largely the result of political instability in Somalia and Eritrea and the breakdown of order in Libya, as well as Syria’s civil war. More than 2,000 people have died trying to make the crossing this year. For many of the survivors, the hope now is to move on to wealthier northern Europe. Less
