In the hot and deadly summer of 1964, the nation’s eyes were riveted on Mississippi.nnOver ten memorable weeks known as Freedom Summer, more than 700 student volunteers joined with organizers and local African Americans in an historic effort to shatter the foundations of white supremacy in Mississippi, the nation’s most segregated state. The summer was marked by sustained and deadly violence, including the notorious murders of three civil rights workers, countless beatings, the burning of thirty-five churches, and the bombing of seventy homes and community centers.nnIn the face of this violence, these organizers, volunteers, and Mississippians worked together to canvass for voter registration, create Freedom Schools, and establish an alternative challenge to the State Democratic Party — the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. Borne of Freedom Summer, and in response to the challenges of registering voters directly within hostile Mississippi, the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party registered its own voters outside of the discriminatory system, ultimately sending a delegation of 68 members to attend the 1964 Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City to confront and unseat the all-white delegation.nnDirected by award-winning documentary filmmaker and MacArthur "Genius" Fellow Stanley Nelson (Freedom Riders, The Murder of Emmett Till), FREEDOM SUMMER highlights an overlooked but essential element of the Civil Rights Movement: the patient and long-term efforts by both outside activists and local citizens in Mississippi to organize communities and register black voters — even in the face of intimidation, physical violence and death. On July 11, 2012, Gary W. Gallagher delivered a Banner Lecture entitled "More Important Than Gettysburg: The Seven Days Campaign as a Turning Point." Ever since the Civil War ended, it has been a popular pastime to look for dramatic turning points in that conflict. For many, the battle of Gettysburg represents the great event that tipped the balance toward the North. Key political, diplomatic, social, and military issues, however, were at stake in the summer of 1862 as Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan faced off in the Seven Days Battles. Gary W. Gallagher argues that Lee's victory had a profound effect on the conflict and that perhaps the series of battles waged on the Virginia Peninsula should be regarded as a major turning point of the war. Dr. Gallagher is a professor of history at the University of Virginia. His most recent book is "The Union War." A sense of ownership and property was lost in the transition from analog records to digital mp3s. There is something really pleasing about rifling through a box of old records that can’t be recreated by hitting an arrow key to scroll through iTunes. We have given up a more rich and meaningful experience in favor of convenience. We blindly accept that the future of music is some variation of the mp3. The purpose of this project was to look to the past, specifically the record playing experience, as an inspiration for the future.nnThe entire recording playing experience is built around a physical artifact. When you drop the needle and it starts to ride along the grooves etched in vinyl, sound beings to play. As the record continues to spin, the needle slowly starts shifting towards the center. The needle’s position reflects where in the album the record currently is. This also allows you to see how far the needle has traveled, and how much more it has left to travel.nnThis project approaches tangible digital music ownership by establishing a connection between a digital album and a physical location. A phone, chosen because it naturally already contains a more refined selection of our vast music library, is placed into the dock and an album is selected. As the album plays the phone moves right, indicating how much time has elapsed. To fine tune or change what song is currently playing, move the phone to the left or right to skip backwards or forwards respectively.   Less

On Tuesday 1 July Cllr Owen Thompson, Leader of Midlothian Council, formally opened the new path at Mavisbank House, one of Scotland’s most important historic buildings. After many decades there is now an easy way for people to access the grounds at Loanhead in Midlothian.nnThis work is a key step towards securing the future of Mavisbank House and designed landscape for the public to appreciate and enjoy.nnThe work has been completed by The Mavisbank Trust with £100,000 of funding from the European Community Tyne Esk LEADER 2007-13 Programme, Scottish Natural Heritage and the Environmental Improvement Funds of five councilors from Midlothian Council’s Bonnyrigg and Midlothian West wards.nnFor many years there has been no formal or easy way for the public to enter the beautiful, but degraded, designed landscape of one of Scotland’s most important historic buildings. Mavisbank was designed and built between 1723-36 as a collaboration between Sir John Clerk of Penicuik and his architect William Adam but, following a devastating fire in 1973, the house has since lain in ruin.nnThe Trust has upgraded the existing riverside path from Polton to Lasswade and created a new path within the grounds linking to the South Drive and House. The works contract was managed by the Edinburgh & Lothians Greenspace Trust. The funding also supported the provision of signage, an interpretation panel, drainage improvements in the grounds and a number of plans and surveys to further the development work at Mavisbank.nnHistoric Scotland, owner of the Mavisbank Policies, and Midlothian Council are currently working in partnership with the Trust to develop plans and seek funding to conserve Mavisbank House and open up the grounds.nnCllr. Thompson said “It is fantastic to see this work completed and I am delighted to be opening the Mavisbank Trust pathway, as it will allow greater public access to one of Midlothian’s beautiful historic landmarks. We are delighted to be working in partnership with Historic Scotland and Mavisbank House on this exciting project to conserve this very special area in Loanhead. Improvements like these not only benefit the local community but open up our area to visitors and tourists and that can only be a good thing.”nnWillie Macnair, Chair of the Mavisbank Trust said “The opening of the path is a proud moment for the Mavisbank Trust and we continue to work with our partners and the community to open up the grounds for the benefit of all while treasuring its essential character.”nnNote: While Historic Scotland welcomes footpath users, visitors should continue to take care and observe safety notices when walking in the grounds as some parts to the north east of the site near the doocot could be unstable due to previous and ongoing landslips. Site surveys are regularly carried out in order to monitor the ground conditions.
