"You could say in the last 50 years everything was about mechanisation to increase scale and efficiency, but the next thing in farming is digitalisation and precision farming, where everything is going to be mapped right down to the single plant," Benedikt Groß told Dezeen.nnHe explained that precision farming is already being used to apply exactly the right amounts of fertiliser or pesticides to specific parts of a field rather than simply coating large areas.nn"Farming becomes more like a digital process or a printing process with these kind of technologies on board," he added. "Maybe a farmer in a few years is a person in front of a dashboard and is literally programming the landscape."nnTo investigate how precision farming technologies might affect the look of that landscape, the designer decided to tackle problems associated with modern monoculture farming by controlling the mix of plants in a field and sowing them in the most efficient pattern. "If you have more diversity then you have to use less pesticides and have less problems with vermin," he explained.nnTo test the process on a field in Germany, the outline of the area was first mapped using a tractor and GPS tracking. Groß then used custom software to determine the most effective layout, dividing the field into patches so 85% of the area would be covered by crops for biomass and 15% of the field would be reserved for a mix of five different flowers.nn"The algorithm divides the field into the right ratio of plants and then tries to create small partitions," he said. "The size and shape of that smaller partition tries to mimic traditional fields, when you had less of the problems associated with monoculture."nnThe seeds were then sown according to this pattern using specially-adapted farming equipment, mounted to a tractor and pulled back and forth across the field like the head of a printer. Groß assembled the machinery by repurposing equipment from farming research and development companies, adding his own software to control where the seed was dropped.nn"About 95 per cent of the equipment is R&D or right from the shelf of two agricultural companies, so the equipment is not that far in the future," the designer said. "More or less everything was there and I just had to experiment in terms of joining the technologies together by writing some software."nnFor the test run shown in the movie, the tractor had to pass over the field twice - once for the oats and once for the flowers - but Groß says the process could easily be completed with one pass if a hopper were mounted at either end of the tractor.nn"It's definitely possible [to do it in one pass] because with modern tractors, normally you have one machine in front and one at the rear so you are able to do two things in one step," he said. "But the machine was 50,000 euros so it was not too easy to persuade them to get a second one for the trial."nnAlthough the technology is expensive at present - meaning only farmers with a lot of land can implement it - Groß is confident that the cost of equipment will come down as precision farming become more widespread. "In five or ten years the equipment I was adapting will be used every day."nnHis system also ties into a shift in arable farming from food production to energy production. "With plants grown for biomass you can have more diversity more easily," he said. "If you have a field for wheat it's really important that the wheat is really pure because in the end it's going to be bread, but with energy production it doesn't matter because everything goes in the same bin in a biomass factory."nnIn addition, European Union subsidies promoting diversity in planting to combat monoculture issues could enable farmers to earn extra money by implementing his design. "With the flower mix I'm using, you can get subsidies - a few hundred euros per hectare I think," he said. "It's really plausible that a farmer could get subsidies on top of an energy production deal."nnFollowing the first crop last month, he's now looking to work with scientists to quantify the impact that his planting system has on the environment and farming practice.nnHe started the project while studying on the Design Interactions course at London's Royal College of Art. Lights Over Lapland - Arctic Nights is my second major film that focuses on the aurora borealis in Abisko National Park, Sweden. The video was captured in its entirety during Lights Over Lapland's aurora borealis photo tours in Abisko between 2012 and 2013. All of the sequences in the film were created using DSLR cameras and a time-lapse technique that required countless hours and thousands of images to create. Several of the sequences in the film have been reproduced in a way that allows the viewer to see the lights dancing in virtual real time just as I saw them while capturing the footage. I am overwhelmingly proud to be able to say that none of the images have been altered in any way.nnI am extremely thankful to be able to call Abisko my home. The opportunity to live and work in such an incredible environment capturing this phenomenon has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life. nnI would like to thank our video editor Tom Malkowicz (vimeo.com/channels/thomas) for his contribution and creative assistance. Without his help this film would not have been possible. I would also like to thank my wife Linnea. Her patience, and willingness to allow me to follow my dreams have been the driving force behind this film. That weekend, I took a visit to New York City as my occasion to break it in. Manhattan has been a limitless source of inspiration for people far more talented than me, but the Blackmagic technology, coming to market in such a versatile size, invited this cinematic tone poem which might, even so, look different. Instead of creating something like a tourism video, I wanted to try and capture the human energy of the city that New Yorkers themselves know best, driven by the extraordinary music of Richard Danielpour that I came across recently (ringing in my head all weekend as I captured these shots).nnTrue to the elegant simplicity of the BMPC (http://bhpho.to/bmccpckt), I shot the entire piece handheld, using a single lens (Panasonic 12-35mm, continuous f2.8 aperture, optically stabilized H-HS12035 | http://focuspull.in/hs12035). Shooting was over the course of two days, September 1 and 2, gathering well under an hour of raw footage which was all that could fit onto a flash card using ProRes 422 HQ anyway. In post-production on September 7, I performed clip-by-clip balancing adjustments using Fast Color Corrector in Adobe Premiere Pro CC, then applied an Adjustment Layer over the entire sequence with FilmConvert Pro 2, using its Blackmagic Cinema Camera profile and selecting the classic film stock emulation of KODAK VISION3 250D Color Negative Film 5207/7207 (adding vintage Super 16mm film grain to match the feel -- and the actual size -- of the BMPC's digital sensor).nnThe BMPC concept has a long way to go; it doesn't live up to its promises in terms of dealing with highlights (those dreaded white orbs), its batteries last a New York minute, and its interface is wonky, but I'm excited by the latitude that it buys me for image corrections in post, given its portable form factor which really suits my working style.nnIf you're interested in seeing the creations and comments and tips of other filmmakers using this camera, join the User Group community that I created at:nnhttp://vimeo.com/groups/blackmagicnhttp://facebook.com/BMCCusersnhttp://twitter.com/BMCCusersnn[Note: This video streams by default in full 1080p high definition. OBEY Clothing teamed up with Suicidal Tendencies for release a clothing collection celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the release of the first Suicidal Tendencies record. We took the iconic graphics of Ric Clayton and the original line drawings done by Lance Mountain as the base of the collection. The idea was to pay homage to the original artists behind the Suicidal graphics as well as celebrate the history and influence Suicidal Tendencies has had on Shepard and OBEY.nnFrom Shepard - nn"I heard that Lance had found his original Suicidal drawings in a drawer after nearly 30 years. I saw the drawings and marveled at the clarity of the line work and how much the images had degraded (in true scuzzy, punk fashion) over the years. I reached out to Lance to ask if I could buy them and we began to talk about a potential Lance/Obey/Suicidal art collaboration. Glen (Friedman), who I have worked with on many projects, introduced me to Jim Muir and we began a limited edition collaboration for Dogtown Skateboards that used my illustration of Jim based on one of Glen's photographs. I talked to Jim about my chat Lance and he brought his brother Mike Muir of Suicidal by my studio to hang. Mike liked the collaboration idea and I now have the honor of presenting the 30th anniversary of their first album. I feel very lucky to know all parties who helped inspire and bring this project together. Thank you Lance Mountain, Glen E. Friedman, Jim Muir and especially Mike Muir, the creative force behind Suicidal."nnAbout Suicidal Tendencies and their self titled first record:nJudging from their name, Suicidal Tendencies were never afraid of a little controversy. Formed in Venice, CA, during the early '80s, the group's leader from the beginning was outspoken vocalist Mike Muir. The outfit specialized in vicious hardcore early on -- building a huge following among skateboarders, lending a major hand in the creation of skatepunk -- before turning their focus eventually to thrash metal. Early on, the group (whose original lineup included Muir, guitarist Grant Estes, bassist Louiche Mayorga, and drummer Amery Smith) found it increasingly difficult to book shows, due to rumors of its members' affiliation with local gangs and consistent violence at their performances. The underground buzz regarding Suicidal Tendencies grew too loud for labels to ignore though, as the quartet signed on with the indie label Frontier; issuing Muir and company's classic self-titled debut in 1983. The album quickly became the best-selling hardcore album up to that point; its best-known track, "Institutionalized," was one of the first hardcore punk videos to receive substantial airplay on MTV, and was eventually used in the Emilio Estevez cult classic movie Repo Man, as well as in an episode for the hit TV show Miami Vice (for which the group made a cameo appearance).nnSuicidal Tendencies went to release numerous records and classic recordings such as Possessed to Skate on Join the Army, You Can't Bring Me Down on Lights, Camera, Revolution among anthers.
