The godfather of American avant-garde cinema, filmmaker and poet Jonas Mekas, whom we met in his Brooklyn-home, has a clear piece of advice for aspiring filmmakers: “Don’t go to film school. Get a camera.”nnIf you have the necessary funds, film school is a nice place to meet like-minded people and make friends. Apart from that, it makes more sense to look into the specific things that you take special interest in – such as lenses – rather than to simply study everything: “Why do you need everything? Maybe you’ll never need it for what you want to do.”nnJonas Mekas (b. 1922 in Lithuania) is an experimental filmmaker and poet. He has filmed artists such as Andy Warhol and Allen Ginsberg, and his movies include ‘The Brig’ (1963) – which won him the Grand Prize at the Venice Film Festival the same year –, ‘Walden’ (1969), ‘Lost Lost Lost’ (1975), ‘Scenes from the Life of Andy Warhol’ (1990), ‘As I was Moving Ahead I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty’ (2000) and ‘Sleepless Night Stories’ (2011). Since 2000, he has expanded his work into the area of film installations, exhibiting at prominent venues such as the Serpentine Gallery, the Centre Pompidou, Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, Moderna Museet, PS1 Contemporary Art Center MoMA and the Venice Biennale. Mekas is also responsible for the legendary Movie Journal (from 1958) in the Village Voice, and in 1964 he founded the Filmmakers’ Cinematheque, which eventually grew into Anthology Film Archives, one of the world’s largest and most important repositories of avant-garde cinema and screening venue. “It’s about making something better,” says director Yves Geleyn. “McDonald’s wanted to communicate how they’re always working to make a Happy Meal better, which can be told quite functionally, but we wanted to tell the story with some charm.”nnThe 60-second spot – created alongside Leo Burnett London – follows a group of miniature men and women on a journey through the idyllic British countryside as they improve the Happy Meal’s contents. “We played with scale and proportion,” says Yves. “I liked the idea of these little characters working to make the box, which remains true to size, better.”nnIt took Yves and his team of fifty people 12 weeks to bring the spot to life, building six sets, as well as 3D-printing and hand-painting hundreds of characters. “It’s filmed almost entirely using stop motion, which I love,” says Yves. “A lot of miniature work is now done with CGI. Stop motion possesses an authenticity, a human touch, that adds so much to a story. A native of New York City, Marshall Sealy began his French horn study at the age of 8 years. As a young musician, he performed with the Long Island Youth Orchestra and attended Manhattan School of Music and Ithaca College, where he received music and soccer scholarships. He then launched a successful second career as a master of brass instrument restoration and modification.nnHis musical career continued with many performing opportunities such as the show orchestras of Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis, Jr., Melba Moore, and the pit orchestras of The Dance Theatre of Harlem and Alvin Ailey Dance Company. In 1979, Marshall moved to Boston (MA), where he played with the orchestra of the Opera Company of Boston (seven seasons), Boston Pops Orchestra, Les Miserables Brass Band, Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, Boston Jazz Composers Orchestra, and the Boston Lyric Opera Orchestra. He has been a soloist with such organizations as the Mostly Mozart Festival (Vermont), Boston Orchestra and Chorale, and the United States Air Force Band. Additional performing credits include Peter Nero and the Philly Pops Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Brooklyn Philharmonic, and the Orchestra Filarmonica de Jalisco in Guadalajara, Mexico.nnSince his return to New York, Marshall has played on Broadway in the pit orchestras of Beauty and the Beast, Jekyll & Hyde, and The Lion King. Their story is one of overcrowded cells, despotic hierarchies, ruthless everydays, and the enduring effects of incarceration. Most of all, however, it is about the crushing pressure of forced labour. Prisoners at Hoheneck manufactured millions of pantyhose, bed sheets, and other products for West German retailers, bringing enormous profits to both sides of the Iron Curtain. This was definitely a unique opportunity to work on something very different. Bot & Dolly / Autofuss brought me in to do the robot animation...

This was definitely a unique opportunity to work on something very different. Bot & Dolly / Autofuss brought me in to do the robot animations for the spot. I animated the moves in Maya, using Bot & Bolly's Maya plugin designed specifically for their robots. This allowed me to choreograph the bulk of the moves that were then handed off to 4 motion designers, each working on a section of the spot in C4D, as well as exporting the final moves to be used on set and programmed into the robots... all without hitting the car or injuring the actor. There were 3 robots and a turntable to animate in every shot.
