Nothing beats the magical 12 foot sparkling Waterford crystal ball descent at the stroke of midnight. Times Square is arguably one of the most electrifying places to bring in the new year, which is why it is no surprise that it has become the global celebration with millions of broadcast viewers.nnThis New Year's Eve timelapse production was produced using more than 18,000 still frames, shot over the course of 12 hours from two hotel rooftop locations (DoubleTree Suites by Hilton NYC - Times Square and Manhattan Times Square) led by Noel Cordero, Brandon Cotter & Hector Arrivillaga of the Timelapse Group. See more movies at www.dezeen.com/movies.nnMassachusetts design studio Nervous System has developed a method of 3D-printing jewellery and garments with articulated joints so they automatically change shape once removed from the printer.nnJessica Rosenkrantz and Jesse Louis-Rosenberg of Nervous System describe their Kinematics project as an example of 4D printing, an emerging area of research which involves printing three-dimensional objects that automatically transform from one shape to another.nAlthough it's long been possible to create larger structures by 3D-printing them in sections then manually assembling the components, what sets 4D printing apart is that the finished object will self-assemble or transform into a pre-determined form.n"4D printing refers to 3D-printing something in one shape that is intended to be in another shape," creative director Jessica Rosenkrantz told Dezeen. "The design transforms into its final configuration without manual labour. The shape it is printed in may be advantageous for various reasons: faster, cheaper, or printing larger objects in a smaller volume."nNervous System are currently working on a dress that can be printed in one piece despite being much larger than the space inside the printer and have also developed a range of jewellery with articulated joints that automatically adapt to the form of the body despite being printed in flat sheets.nThe designers first developed software to give any 3D model a flexible structure, made from tessellated triangles linked by built-in hinges. A second process then folds the model automatically to compress it into the smallest possible volume, optimising the use of space inside a 3D printer. The object simply unfurls into its intended shape once lifted out of the printer.nThey named the process Kinematics after the branch of mechanics of the same name - also referred to as the geometry of motion - that describes the movement of objects but not its cause.n"We think the greatest advantage of Kinematics is that it can transform any three-dimensional shape into a flexible structure for 3D printing," Rosenkrantz said. "The system then compresses the structure down through computational folding."nTo create the dress, a 3D-scan of a person's body forms the basis for a digitally modelled garment, to which the tessellated pattern is applied. The rigidity and behaviour of the final dress can be controlled at this stage by altering the configuration of the triangular hinged mesh: the way the material will drape as a result is simulated on-screen. This digital model can then be folded into a much smaller shape using computer simulation software and printed in compressed form. When the dress is lifted out of the printer, it will unfurl into its intended shape.n"Compressed designs offer benefits not only for production but also for transport," Rosenkrantz added. "It holds great promise for the creation of flexible wearables but could also be used to enable the production of other large-scale structures in today's small-scale printers."nNervous System began developing the Kinematics concept last year in response to a brief set by mobile phone manufacturer Motorola to create customisable 3D-printed products.nThe pair first produced a collection of nylon jewellery derived from the tessellated hinged triangles. The pieces emerge from the printer in a stack of flat sheets but the articulated structure allows them to to fit around the shape of the body.nThey developed an online application so users can customise the jewellery designs themselves by selecting different module shapes, altering the density of components in selected areas, changing the profile of the design by dragging the outline around, specifying the size and deciding on the colour.nThe price of the product is recalculated with every alteration and once happy the customer can order it to be produced by Nervous System. A second free application allows users to experiment with Nervous System's templates and print the results at home.nRosenkrantz and Louis-Rosenberg then developed the principle by adding the ability to fold the design down to its smallest possible spatial configuration. I think it was at springtime 2012, when I came across David Shiyang Lius lovely piece of work about Ira Glass. It was the most inspiring and motivating video, I have ever seen in my life. I watched it over and over again, listened to Ira Glass' voice and told myself, that I am not the only person who is constantly disappointed about the gap between ones taste and ones skills. Later on in 2012 I decided to do an own filmed version of Iras interview - use my own language to tell his message. It took me about a year from concept to upload.nnI made it for myself and for anybody who is in doubt with his creative career. I also think that Ira Glass' message isn't only limited to the creative industry. It can be applied to everyone who starts out in a new environment and is willing to improve.nnTHANK YOUnIra Glass whom I've never met in real life but had such a big influence in my development. This time we focused on the Indian Cove section of the park, as well as the secluded Lost Horse Gold Mine (http://1.usa.gov/1iW2nzj) and the scorched fields on the 6 mile loop trail surrounding it. As you can see in the first shots, there had definitely been a massive fire at some point. The mine itself was pretty surreal -- such a bizarre sight set against the desolate desert! Though an epic storm system rolled over the skies for most of Night 1, the massive clouds parted in the early AM to reveal some incredible starscapes and a beautiful palette for star trails and other experimentation. nnYou can see the giant shift from stormfront to starry skies play out in a 23 second uninterrupted shot 0:45-1:08 taking place over four hours of continuous shooting and an entire battery from start to finish! Star trails effect created with the natural rotation of the earth's axis, including the final shot, which circles around the North Star, creating "vortex" effect seen. STARSTAX used to merge pics. Used a Canon EOS 6D with a 24mm/1.4 lens -- exposures between 20 and 25 seconds, ISO between 3200 and 5000, f/2.8. nnThe cabin you see in the background of some shots is part of the www.IndianCoveRanch.Com resort my girlfriend and I stayed at for some of the trip. Amazing place -- just twenty feet from the park boundary! Also if you look closely around 1:15-1:19 at the bottom left of the screen, you'll see what looks like a desert rabbit hopping around the grounds. Pretty interesting stuff! Maybe someone out there can positively ID it for us? One day wake up and realize you're given the opportunity to changes someones life for the better. You get an idea, don't think twice and Run with it. Meet my clients Jim, Grace and Josie. As many of you have followed this family and have prayed for their journey I have a confession, A BIG one!!! Last week I requested that if any of you wished to lend a hand in making my clients 11 year old birthday with her terminal father the best, to contact me. Many of you did. Well as usual I mustered up a crazy idea and tried my best to not only make it happen but keep it a secret. I did pretty dang well at doing so until I clued the 23 of you in that helped on what was actually happening the night before. You see about 4 days before this event I contacted Grace and asked her what she thought about having a mini wedding for Josie. She mentioned she was so emotional about her dad not being there for memories down the line so I figured we would make some now. I told her mother I was coming over with a dress from Macy's, dinner for some close friends and I'd do her makeup. We'll low and behold I actually had a FULL blown wedding up my sleeve. Not to mention the press was even there. I planned every detail with my rockstar team that had NO IDEA they were even helping. From the hair and makeup, to her designer dress that was drove to me that morning from LA fashion week, flowers, a vintage set, an evening totally catered, his suit, a ring for goodness sakes, a pastor, gifts and the best dessert table ever!!! We had it all. Jim, Josie and Grace it was an honor surprising you. Josie you will forever have a video of you and your dad walking you down the aisle to play at your wedding in years to come as if he was physically there. Enjoy this video friends..I wish you all could have been there!!!
