His unique sound is bewitching and deliciously addictive to listen to. Born on the Isle of Man, Manx spent his childhood in Canada and left in his teens to live in Europe, Japan, India and Brazil. He honed his hypnotic live show on street corners, in cafes, bars and at festivals. But it was Indian music that captured his attention and in the mid 80s he began a five-year tutelage with Rajasthani Indian musician Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (Grammy winner with Ry Cooder for A Meeting by the River). Receiving the gift of Bhatt's custom-made, self-designed mohan veena (a 20-stringed sitar/guitar hybrid) was the catalyst for Harry to forge a new path with his now signature east-meets-west style of music. While the mohan veena itself is beyond exotic, Manx uses it within traditional Western sound structures. A successful touring performer, Manx has brought his "breathtaking" solo shows across Canada and into the USA, Australia, and Europe. He has appeared at many prestigious festivals, world-class theatres, concert halls and infamous Blues clubs around the globe. Playing the Mohan Veena, lap steel, harmonica, stomp box, and banjo, Manx quickly envelops the audience into what has been dubbed "the Harry Zone" with his warm vocals and the hauntingly beautiful melodies of his original songs. It's in the live setting, Manx says, that the bridge between "heavenly" India and "earthy" American blues is most effectively built. "Indian music moves inward," he explains. "It's traditionally used in religious ceremonies and meditation, because it puts you into this whole other place ... Western music has the ability to move out, into celebration and dance. I love to see that working — that effect on the audience. My goal has always been to draw the audience as deep as possible into the music." Manx is a prolific artist, releasing seven albums in a seven-year span with no signs of stopping. He has received three Maple Blues Awards and several Canadian Folk Music Awards. Most recently he was the recipient of CBC Radio's Great Canadian Blues Awards for 2007. At 12:30 am on Friday morning, January 24, a convoy of pilot and flagger vehicles, state, county, and city police escorts, and a 804,000-pound transport of tar sands mining equipment hauled by Portland, Oregon area-based Omega Morgan hesitantly rolled down Reserve Street in Missoula, Montana, and ground to a halt. For a third night, about sixty mostly indigenous people from Missoula, Butte, Helena, and all over Montana and Canada sprang from the sidewalk near Central Avenue and filled the five-lane width of Reserve Street with singing, drumming, and round dancing. Police respectfully backed off and stood by, letting the ceremony symbolizing solidarity and friendship continue for 10 to 15 minutes, while dozens of the vehicles and workers facilitating ecocide, genocide, and climate chaos idled all around the beautiful circle. Together with the spirits of the Earth, ancestors, and elders, the strong prayers and actions of the Salish, Cree, Anishinabe, Blackfeet, and Cheyenne people who participated in person or from afar impressed everyone who heard the songs and watched the round dance. A handful of drummers and singers -- Amanda, Charles, Lionel, Q.J., and others -- led two rounds of dancing around them, before the joyous blockaders slowly vacated the street.nnAs police encouraged the protesters to move toward the sidewalk, Charles stepped forward toward the convoy vehicles and police to speak for a few moments. Three heroic grandmothers and friends, Claudia Brown, Gail Gilman, and Carol Marsh, stayed behind and sat in the road. Police cited and released Gail and Carol, and arrested, booked, and released Claudia on bail. As the tar sands megaload convoy resumed progress toward the most destructive and expensive, fossil fuel extraction project on Earth, a young Native woman smudged its passage, and drumming, singing, and praying blessed the cool night air with hope that the injustices, devastation, and resulting climate change of tar sands exploitation will soon stop. After Reserve Street cleared, Wild Idaho Rising Tide (WIRT) videotaped Missoula city police issuing citations to two of the grandmothers, and interviewed Carol and Gail, to discern and share their motivations for responsibly blockading tar sands supply shipments. Their courageous acts mark almost four years of similar on-the-ground resistance staged by tribal, climate, and conservation activists in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington since April 2010.nnWIRT and our allies admire the determination, organization, and community spirit of Indian Peoples Action, Blue Skies Campaign, and Northern Rockies Rising Tide, who coordinated the Thursday night round dance blockade and have been standing up to this industrial juggernaut and bringing awareness of tar sands production and transportation damages to the public for years. We appreciate the mutual support, input, and opportunities for cross-state neighbors to confront the unnecessary invasions of Big Oil. Devi Sri Prasad (born 2 August 1979) is an Indian music composer, playback singer and lyricist in Telugu and Tamil films, currently residing in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh. Early life: Sri Prasad was born in Vedurupaka, East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh, India. His family later moved to Chennai where he completed his schooling and BBA graduation. Music fascinated him since an early age and he won several prizes in light music and dance competitions in his childhood. At school, he used to learn Kabir dohas and other such stuff and compose his own tune for them. His father G.Satya Murthy is an accomplished script writer and his grandmother Devi Meenakshi is a classical musician. He is a disciple of renowned mandolinist U. Srinivas and he learnt Carnatic music from him. He was heavily inspired by the works of Maestro Ilaiyaraaja and Michael Jackson. Career: He started off by composing tunes for college functions. He gave music to '50-50', a serial on Gemini TV and lent his voice to its title song. He got the big break when Magnasound featured his song ‘Ey Unnoda’ in the their collection of Tamil pop songs called ‘Dance Party’. This song, along with the video, catapulted his music career into a new dimension. Later on, the company asked him to do his own album, and it was eventually released as 'Mr.Devi'. Producer M.S. Raju was impressed with his talent and asked him to compose for his mythological movie 'Devi'. DSP, the 17-year-old debutant surprised everyone with his songs and meticulous re-recording involving vedic chants and choral hymns. Both soundtrack and background score were highly appreciated with the song "Nee Navve" still being very popular. He then composed a single song "Konte Baapu" for popular Telugu director Srinu Vaitla's directorial debut venture Nee Kosam. From the 1950s to the present day, Soul Britannia investigates vinyl obsessions, Soul dancing, imitation, innovation -- and much more. nnnWith soul as its guiding light, the first film tracks the extraordinary musical changes that post-war Britain experienced. After the staid, uptight 1950s, the UK blossomed into an all-night, neon-lit soul-athon. From groovy Soho basements to "Ready Steady Go" TV specials, the music rocked the nation through the 1960s...nThe first film in the series examines how these sounds seeped into our culture via imported US vinyl, the music West Indian immigrants brought with them and the electric performances of touring American soul bands. Our traditional reserve was soon broken down. In fact, the impact on the British -- from London night spots to Welsh valleys, Newcastle music halls to the Belfast docks -- was quite devastating.
