*Al Qaeda gunmen attack Grand Bassam resort * 16 people are killed including four Europeans All six gunmen are killed by Ivorian Special Forces Gunmen from the North African branch of al Qaeda killed 16 people at a popular resort town in Ivory Coast on Sunday. Six attackers fired on beach goers in Grand Bassam before being killed themselves in clashes with Ivorian special forces. Al Qaeda claims responsibility for the attack that killed 16 at an Ivory Coast beach resort https://t.co/RlztPEuMxe pic.twitter.com/2Ue6RtUSgF— VICE News (@vicenews) March 13, 2016 The Ivorian President, Alassane Ouattara, traveled to the resort on Sunday evening. Speaking to reporters he confirmed that 14 civilians and two soldiers had died in the attack . He also added that all the gunmen had been “neutralized”. “These cowardly terrorist attacks will not be tolerated in the Ivory Coast, and we have taken important measures. These attacks were brought under control in three or four hours thanks to our security and defence forces, whom I want to congratulate,” he said. Four Europeans were among those killed including one confirmed Frenchman. It’s the latest in a string of deadly assaults across West Africa, the most recent being nearly two months ago when Islamist fighters killed dozens of people in a hotel and cafe frequented by tourists in neighbouring Burkina Faso. Gunmen also attacked a hotel in the Malian capital, Bamako late last year. Though previously untouched by Islamist violence, Ivory Coast, French-speaking West Africa’s largest economy and the world’s top cocoa producer, has been considered a target for militants. It has been on high alert since the Burkina Faso attack. Less

Tunisia is beefing up security measures after a gunman went on a shooting spree at a hotel. leaving dozens dead. The attacker, disguised as a tourist, opened fire on people relaxing by the pool and on the beach. A tranquil holiday setting was turned into a scene of terror. In a televised address, Tunisian Prime MInister Habib Essid said it is a “national duty” to fight extremism. Moves are now being made to close down 80 mosques, that remain outside state control, for inciting violence and to crack down on financing channels for some associations. The attack happened at the Imperial Marhaba hotel in Sousse, a popular beach resort around 140 kilometres south of the capital Tunis. It has been claimed by the self-proclaimed Islamic State group, which called on followers to step up assaults during Ramadan. British, German and Belgian nationals are among those murdered. The gunmen was reportedly shot dead by police. Local radio said that police captured a second gunmen, but officials did not immediately confirm the arrest or his role in the attack. “It was just one attacker,” said a hotel worker at the site. “He was a young guy dressed in shorts like he was a tourist himself.” Many tourists are now leaving Sousse, with special flights laid on to get people home. US officials say it’s likely that a senior ISIL commander – linked to major attacks in Tunisia last year – was killed in air strikes on Libyan soil that destroyed a suspected training camp run by the self-styled Islamic State early on Friday. Around 30 to 40 recruits died in the bombing, according to reports quoting sources in the area. The base at Sabratha west of Tripoli was linked to Nourredine Chouchane – also known as “Sabir” – a Tunisian blamed for attacks on the Bardo Museum in Tunis and a beach resort near Sousse which left 60 people dead. The Pentagon said ISIL posed a direct threat to the United States and needed to be confronted wherever it surfaced. “We took this action against Sabir and the training camp after determining that both he and the ISIL fighters at these facilities were planning external attacks on US and other western interests in the region,” said Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook. “As you know, this is not the first time we have taken direct action in Libya or against other high-value ISIL targets, and it may not be the last”. Statement on Libya Airstrike on #ISIL. Strike demonstrates we will go after ISIL using full range of tools available https://t.co/P8S3Nvs7YB— Peter Cook (@PentagonPresSec) February 19, 2016 The US fighter jets that carried out the raid took off from an RAF base at Lakenheath in Suffolk, southern England. Despite the destruction of the ISIL camp at Sabratha, there’s alarm in the West that ISIL is expanding its control into Libya, with many Tunisians joining the jihadists’ ranks. Senior ISIL fighters are said to have recently moved to Libya from Iraq and Syria. Libya has slid further into chaos since its former leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown five years ago, with two rival governments operating, backed by rival factions of former rebel brigades. Less

Javea is a beach resort on the Costa del Sol. British expats began moving to the small beach-side town in the 60s and 70s. Their numbers swelled further after Spain joined with Brussels in 1986. Figures from 2014 show Spain is the most popular EU destination for British migrants. But now, there is uncertainty – and worry. Chuck Daulson English 51 Bar owner “We don’t know how we’re going to be now, we might have no pension, we might have no medical, we may have to sell our properties, we’ve lived here for a lot of years, we don’t know how it’s going to affect us anymore.” Sarah Londoner 28 Living in Benidorm Waitress “If we leave the EU, then it’s bad on us expats who live here, obviously we’ll lose our medical care, we’ll lose our right to work without a work permit. Me and my boyfriend, we’ve lived here for 3 years, we won’t get a chance to get a mortgage or anything like that now.” Thomas McCarney British Javea resident for 23 years “We are all in limbo, we have just to wait and see what they decide is going to happen. But it is a worry, of course it is. Twenty-three-years here is a long time to be here”. And the worry runs both ways. Spanish business owners who rely heavily on the tourist sector are concerned what the Brexit will mean for their profits. Less

The leaders of the so-called Brics nations – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – are meeting in the Indian beach resort of Goa. The five countries make up nearly half the world’s population and about a quarter of its GDP, and re-balancing the global economy and giving the developing world more say in the G20 and IMF are expected to top the agenda. Host India is also pushing for strong action against terrorism, and earlier Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Russian efforts to combat militancy. “Russia’s clear stand on the need to combat terrorism mirrors our own. We deeply appreciate Russia’s understanding and support of our actions to fight cross-border terrorism that threatens our entire region,’‘ Modi said. Stressing the need for zero tolerance against terrorists, Russia’s president also welcomed deeper cooperation with India in the military, space and energy sectors. “Our cooperation in the military sphere is rather successful. Russia is not only selling weapons and hardware to India but also, through our joint ventures, producing the most modern examples of the latest technology,” President Vladimir Putin said. Security surrounding the summit remains ultra tight. India has long accused Pakistan of letting militants operate out of its territory, something Islamabad denies. Modi is expected to raise the issue with China, a key economic ally of Pakistan. Less

The recent stormy weather has brought rough seas to Newquay, Cornwall, where the high tide and rough seas have made it dangerous enough for the Towan beach access road to be closed off. To add to its dominance, the sea also appears to have torn through the sea wall and carved a large hole from underneath the road causing a significant part of it to collapse, ensuring any access to to the beach or sea wall is now virtually impossible.
