As leader of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis has condemned the Easter Sunday suicide bombing in a park in Lahore. At least 70 people died, many of them women and children. A faction of the Taliban in Pakistan says it was behind the attack and says Christians were the intended target. Pakistan is a mainly Muslim nation with a Christian population of around two million. Many live in Lahore, the liberal and affluent capital of the Punjab region. I wish to express my closeness to all those affected by this vile and senseless crime and invite you to pray to the Lord for the many victims and their loved ones. At least 70 people were killed, mostly women and children who were on an Easter weekend outing, according to Reuters. About 340 others were wounded, and 25 of them are said to be in serious condition. Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a faction of the Pakistani Taliban, which claimed responsibility clearly said it was to challenge the government and Christians were the target. "The target was Christians," the terror group's spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan was quoted as saying. "We want to send this message to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif that we have entered Lahore." "The United States stands with the people and government of Pakistan at this difficult hour," the State Department added. "We send our deepest condolences to the loved ones of those killed and injured, and our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Lahore as they respond to and recover from this terrible tragedy." Lahore is seen as the power base of Sharif, and is the capital of Punjab province. Nestling at the foot of the hill where Rome’s emperors once lived, the church was buried under rubble by an earthquake in 847 and only uncovered in 1900. It is called the “Sistine Chapel” of the early Middle Ages because it collected the very best of figurative culture of the Christian world between Rome and Byzantium – and has escaped the constant updates performed on other historic buildings in Rome. Now it is open to the public for the first time. “This church has stayed intact, untouched, even if heavily damaged by the passage of time. This makes it, at once, extremely interesting and in constant need of methods that can enhance its visibility and understanding,” says Medieval and Byzantine Art historian and exhibition curator Maria Andaloro. Among the treasures is a depiction of the Virgin Mary with child, one of the oldest known Christian icons in the world, which was moved to another church in Rome after the earthquake but has now been returned to Santa Maria Antiqua. To coincide with its re-opening a multi-media exhibition using modern technology such as 3D projections show the spectacular history of the church through its different layers of development. One wall projection shows how a depiction of the angel Gabriel telling Mary she had been chosen to be the mother of Christ was painted on top of a pre-Christian Byzantine queen wearing a crown and a pearl-covered gown. ‘‘The effort we made was to use modern technology, like 3D projections, we have tried to integrate all paintings and all different phases, offering to the public a way to visualise the history of the church, as the various layers of painting succeeded one another as time passed and new work was commissioned by different actors,” says Medieval Art historian and exhibition curator Guilia Bordi. The walls of the basilica show saints and martyrs, madonnas and queens, popes and emperors in a rich display that remained frozen and undefiled over the centuries. One part of the church focuses on the narrative story of the life of Christ followed by stories of the saints and martyrs, whilst the second section displays the extensive collection of icons. The current exhibition “Santa Maria Antiqua tra Roma e Bisanzio”, runs until September 11.   Less

A witness said the driver was so impaired that he hopped the curb and took out some bushes outside a Family Dollar store on Park Avenue. Body camera video showed Matthew McEachnie and Heath Wood trying to communicate with the driver, who spoke broken English. The officers found a cooler filled with beer in the man’s back seat, and officials said the man didn’t have valid identification. “(The driver) was obviously impaired, so I called 911,” witness William Gusler said. Gusler questioned why the two officers didn’t arrest the driver and instead told him to call for a ride. “I would love to do a DUI, but I don't feel like being (eaten) up with 'Oh, well, he didn't understand anything you were saying,’” Wood said moments before McEachnie appeared to shut off his body camera for nearly four minutes. “This is disappointing. We try to rise up a little higher in our professionalism in how we investigate crimes,” Apopka police Capt. Randy Fernandez said. Fernandez said the department wants to be hard on DUIs and not let them go. On the video, Wood is heard telling a woman on the man’s phone, “He's very intoxicated, he has a bunch of open containers in the vehicle, he said he's been drinking (and) he has no driver's license.” Police said the department has Spanish-speaking officers who can assist in such situation. So this guy in a red ford explorer decides to go around my neighbor (grey van in video) while he's attempting to make a left turn. Watch the right corner of the video and you can see the aftermath pic. I was sitting inside laying in bed when this happened. After I heard the horrible crash I ran outside and my neighbor and I were the first 2 on the scene. the driver was sitting in the car flooring it while propped up on the tree in the pic. we kept asking him to turn off the engine. we opened his door and he raised his hands and immediately told us "I'm coming down on crack. I'm coming down on crack"... over and over again. he then thought we were the police and asked us to take him to jail. in due time my friend. so goddamn lucky this SOB didn't kill anyone as he was heading straight for my neighbor who was in her front yard trimming her rose bush. just another lovely day in l.a..
