Boko Haram is terrorist organization based in northeastern Nigeria, also active in Chad, Niger and northern Cameroon. The group is led by Abubakar Shekau. Estimates of the group's membership vary between 7,000 and 10,000 fighters. The group initially had links to al-Qaeda, but in 2014 it expressed support for the Islamic State before pledging formal allegiance to it in March 2015. This move appears to give the Islamic State a foothold outside of the Middle East and North Africa for the first time, as terrorist organization tries to create a global caliphate.nnHundreds of decomposing bodies have been found dead in the north-east Nigerian town of Damask, apparently victims of the ISWAP insurgency, as details emerged on Monday of fresh attacks by the militants. Totally, ISWAP is responsible for over 5,500 civilian death since 2014. North-east Nigeria has been relentlessly targeted throughout the jihadists’ six-year uprising but there had been a lull in violence in recent weeks. A coalition of troops from Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria opposes ISWAP in this region. nnRecent video released by IS sang the praises of Boko Haram fighters, while the Nigeria-based militant group also released a propaganda video, via IS’s social media channels. The accounts dropped the name Boko Haram, as well as its official title, Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati wal-Jihad, Arabic for “People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet's Teachings and Jihad.” Instead the Nigerian group was referred to as ISWAP. The photographs all carried the logos, which have been typically seen in official IS material that has been published. This would appear to show that the terror group has taken full control of propaganda in its new province. nnThe Islamic State media campaign is overseen by Abu Amr al Shami, a Syrian born in Saudi Arabia, who was previously IS leader in Aleppo. Initially Islamic State has become widely known with its horrific videos of executions. However, it uses diverse range of tools from static websites, chat forums, and online magazines to making efficient use of today’s interactive and fast-paced social media platforms. IS’s followers are loud and noisy, tweeting, streaming and Instagramming their exploits. Terror is now being transmitted across the globe in real time. Islamic State is an active user of blogs, instant messaging, video sharing sites, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Tumblr and Ask FM. Its media campaign underscores that terror can be streamed and sold with graphic images, audio messages, and music. This campaign is an effective tool for psychological operations and for recruitment. Social media is the most popular medium for young people to communicate today. It is trendy, interactive, and is populated by a very young and sometimes naïve demographic. IS has brought propaganda of terror to a whole new level and today it has come to the West Africa.nnIn interview on April 22, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia is arming Syria and Iraq to help them battle the Islamic State and called U.S.-led coalition strikes against the group ineffective, Reuters reports. "We are helping both Iraq and Syria, possibly more effectively than anyone else, by providing weapons to their armies and security forces," he said. Lavrov criticized the U.S.-led efforts to battle the militant group, and called on Washington to work with Syrian president Bashar al-Assad in the fight against IS. Meanwhile, US-backed Saudi coalition is continuing airstrikes in Yemen. On April 27, airstrikes targeted a civilian aircraft, which was operated by Yemen based Felix Airways. Local media reported that a plane carried food and humanitarian aid has also been hit. While the Islamic State terror group sees an opening in the chaos and is looking to establish a new branch in Yemen, US-backed Saudi’s coalition prefers to conduct airstrikes against Houthis forces, not against terrorists. Morquecho, feeling a mixture of still drunk and hungover from the New Year's celebrations the night before, interviewed the Zapatista leader minutes after he and his comrades had stormed and taken over the municipal hall of San Cristobal.nnTwenty years after the Zapatista uprising, VICE traveled to Chiapas to meet Morquecho, the first local journalist to speak with the Zapatista Army face-to-face, so he could recall the events of that fateful day—it was the first indigenous armed uprising in Latin America in the internet age.nnIn 1993, Mexico's then-president Carlos Salinas de Gortari signed the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the presidents of the United States and Canada. NAFTA was meant to establish a globalized tri-national economic front, and it went into effect January 1, 1994.nnThat same morning, as a direct response to the neoliberal policies that were gradually taking hold in Mexico, thousands of indigenous fighters emerged from the rain forests of the Altos region of Chiapas, in southern Mexico, with the intention to take seven municipalities, including San Cristobal. The group called itself the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN).nnOn January 1, without warning, the EZLN released the Declaration of the Lacandona Jungle, in which the armed group declared war on the Mexican government, and demanded "jobs, land, housing, food, health, education, independence, freedom, democracy, justice, and peace."nnFrom that moment on, and during the 12 days that followed, the war between the EZLN and the Mexican Army gripped several towns and villages in Chiapas, resulting in more than 100 casualities and a still-disputed number of disappeared people. Infighting immediately broke out within the presidential guard, sparking what has now become a brutal tribal and civil war that has pitted Machar's ethnic Nuer loyalists against the majority Dinka, who have sided with Kiir. Machar narrowly escaped assassination, fleeing to the deep bush as Kiir's troops razed his home and killed his bodyguards. And now the world's newest sovereign nation is in imminent danger of becoming a failed state.nnIn February, journalists and filmmakers Robert Young Pelton and Tim Freccia set out on a grueling mission to locate Machar in his secret hideout in Akobo and get his side of the story. Accompanying was Machot Lat Thiep, a former child soldier and Lost Boy who had advised on South Sudan's constitution and now works as a manager of a Costco in Seattle. Machot acted as a guide of sorts, arranging Pelton and Freccia's rendezvous with Machar through a series of endless satellite-phone calls to old contacts and rebel platoons, who would eventually guide the group to the deposed vice president.nnAfter spending a couple days with Machar, he granted Pelton and Freccia unprecedented access to the front lines of a battle in Malakal, where for the first time in history the pair documented the heretofore mythical White Army as they looted, murdered, and pillaged their way to some twisted interpretation of "victory."nnSaving South Sudan is a multi-platform exploration of the horrors of the country's newest civil war. We devoted an entire issue of the magazine to Robert Young Pelton and Tim Freccia's sprawling 35,000-plus word epic exploration of the crisis in South Sudan. The Kurds of Northern Iraq have long recognized this principle and incorporated it into their quest to build a Kurdish homeland in the overlap between Iraq, Iran, Turkey, and Syria. Fighting alongside their male comrades in a region not exactly known for its progressive stance on women's rights, the female Peshmerga guerillas of the Kurdish Liberation Movement built a reputation for themselves in the 70s and 80s as demure diaboliques with the deadly poise of Leila Khaled or Tania-era Patty Hearst.nnHaving secured the northern third of Iraq for themselves in the aftermath of the first Gulf War, the Kurds have spent the last two decades divesting themselves of their guerilla jamjams, building up a stable and booming economy in their semi-autonomous little hamlet, and generally enjoying not being in the middle of the current Iraq War. Up in the hills abutting Iran and Turkey, however, the struggle for a Greater Kurdistan continues for boy and girl alike.nnThe successors to Iraqi Kurdistan's old rebel militias are a milk-besodden Alphabits bowl of various Maoist, quasi-Maoist, and won't-say-they're-Maoist-but-come-on guerilla armies. You've got the PKK, the PJAK, the KCK—all of whom have slightly different tactics, territories, and ideologies but the same ultimate goal and, secretly, a lot of the same personnel. More importantly, they are all completely gender-equal, just like Mao wanted it. From the highest command to the lowest potato peeler to the ghillie-suited sniper on the front lines, dudes and dames do it the same.nnWe picked the youngest of these new Kurdish guerilla groups, PJAK, the Free Life for Kurdistan party, and drove up to their outpost on the Iranian border to see how their female fighters are helping their people draft a definitive answer to the Kurdish Question that's vexed Middle-Eastern politics for the last century. And hopefully find an answer to our own Kurdish Question.
