See more architecture and design movies at dezeen.com/moviesnnRoyal College of Art graduate Ayca Dundar has redesigned the umbrella, paring it back to a pop-up canopy with six parts so it can recover from being blown inside out.nnDriven by the number of broken umbrellas she saw littering London's streets on a rainy day, Dundar set about finding a better solution.nnShe dissected a number of the broken umbrellas and decided that the problem lay in their overly intricate mechanisms.nn"Their complex structure makes them fragile and non-repairable," she said. "They are so rigid that they turn inside out and break during strong winds."nnThe Drop umbrella has a supple structure, so it flexes during strong wind and comes back to its original position afterwards.nnIts organic form consists of only six repairable parts that depend on material properties rather than hinges and joints. It closes into a compact flat disk for ease of transport.nnThe cover is made from waterproof fabric stretched over two plastic-coated spring steel strips. The aluminium pole is attached to a 3D-printed plastic handle.nnIts comparatively simple design makes its UK-based manufacture more cost effective than traditional umbrella designs, which are commonly made from parts produced in the Far East.nnDrop was Ayca Dundar's final project for her MA in Design Products at the Royal College of Art and is on display at the institution's Kensington Gore campus in London until 29 June.   Less

The extreme close-up may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of David Fincher's unique visual aesthetic. That's because Fincher's extreme close-ups don't call attention to themselves. The filmmaker stitches the shots into his pictures in a way that is subtle and fluid, yet impactful and abrasive. They often go unnoticed, sitting just under the surface and scratching at our eyes. In my previous two "Extreme Close-Up" videos, I looked at Quentin Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson, two masters of the ECU. If Tarantino and PTA use the ECU as explanation points, Fincher's are used as hyphens, semicolons, and parentheses. When Summit Entertainment tapped me to shoot the Movie Poster for Step Up All In I was super excited. Every time I have worked with dancers in the past they took direction exceptionally well. The phenomenal cast of dancers cast for this movie did not need my direction at all. I simply let them know where their mark was, what mood we were looking for and let them do what they do best as seen in this Behind the Scenes video.nnWe shot on a standard white seemless dry set and then onto the fun water tank set complete with fountains. The water tank was made by Dean Wadella and Stewart Handley in Vancouver. They worked hard to ensure the water was warm enough for the talent to jump in without freezing. Fortunately the talent never balked and once in we almost couldn’t get them out.nnThe energy from the dancers was endless. The break dancing Monster was exhaustible. Twitch kept nailing the same move without flaw. Andi and Sean had incredible chemistry that made it so easy for me to photograph sexy images for the key art. The amazing thing is that single image of them used on the movie poster is almost identical to the in camera capture.nnThe water set proved to be so much fun. It reminded me of being in a water fight as a kid. Here I gave the dancers direction to use dynamic movements that would be accentuated and enhanced by the water spray extension.nnCheck out this film in theaters everywhere August 8th.nn#stepupallin #monteisom   Less
