A video of German mayoral candidate Josefa Schmid has gone viral online, after her cover of the song “Because you have a heart like mine” racked up more than 10,000 views on YouTube. Opponents have accused the 39-year-old mayor of Kollnburg in Bavaria of using the music video as part of her electoral campaign. Schmid however denies the allegations, saying that the video was simply a declaration of love for her Bavarian home town. In the video Schmid is singing outdoors while wearing the traditional Bavarian dress, the dirndl, along with a red string bikini. The Free Democratic Party politician explains her reasons behind the video, "I must say this very clearly that I made this video, this declaration of love, about my hometown with no motive. I did not use this for my election campaign. Instead, I just wanted to express that I love Bayern and my home town very much, and a song says more than a 1,000 words." Schmid talks about how this music video can be seen positively, "I hope that with this video, which has been interpreted as part of my election campaign, which wasn't my intention, that I am a positive example of how creative German people can be, that I could come up with such an idea. I think we should be more comfortable being ourselves." Her cover of the song has become a hit on YouTube, easily beating a rap video produced by the opposition party candidate, Josef Heisl, from the Christian Social Union. However, the real competition will take place on September 15, when local elections are due to take place in Bavaria. Less
