The lightsaber sound from Star Wars was created by legendary sound designer Ben Burtt. He combined the sounds of a 35mm projector and a 70s tube TV to create one of the most iconic sounds in movie history. nnIn this episode I try and use the same techniques Ben Burtt did and create a similar analog driven sound design for my very own lightsaber.nnFinding a tube TV wasn't hard but couldn't locate an old projector with twin motors but I was able to replicate a similar sound with a square-wave generator.nnMy advice would be to walk around your house with a mic and recorder and see what kind of sounds you get from all the electrical appliances. (just be mindful that getting too close to certain electromagnetic fields could put your gear & sd cards in danger, never happened to me, but that's what I heard can happen in certain cases)nnOlder appliances seemed to work better for me as I got a lot of interesting sounds by recording the vibration of the their electrical transformers.nnAnother tip would be to go to antique stores with an audio recorder and record all the old interesting mechanical devices from yesteryear. You may even run into an old 35mm projector!nnAfter making this episode I find myself hearing a lot more electrical hums wherever I go. It never hurts to bring an audio recorder with you at all times! nnA great resource I found was the "The Lightsaber Sound Cookbook" which really goes in depth about the whole process of creating these kind of sounds. But we can’t help but notice that there’s something…. weird about the face swap. Something… horrific. Perhaps it’s even an example of the Body Horror genre, especially when face swaps go wrong. Glitchy face swaps have a certain gruesomeness about them but they also reveal something interesting about the relationship between humans and computers. When a computer doesn’t know the difference between your face or a hubcap, what does that say about the way computers see us? In tribute, we wanted to create an animated interview short that shed a light on both his brilliant, rapid-fire, comedic mind, as well as his sensitivity and concern for the world around him. We found the perfect outtakes--vintage Robin Williams--in two interviews recorded by Lawrence Grobel for a story he wrote for Playboy magazine in 1992.nnThis Robin Williams episode begins with his predictions for what the world would be like in 2020 (30 years in the future from when this was recorded) and his own philosophy of why comedy is needed to help us not take ourselves too seriously. Remember, he said: “we still are part animal.”nnAnd then Robin Williams breaks down the comedy of sex and the universal faces people make during lovemaking. Classic. Needless to say, we loved animating the noises Robin Williams made. Finally he turns to the joys of having children and looks inward at his own shortcomings and, of course, being hairy. nnEnjoy, everybody. RIP, Robin.
