"I want to be the force which is truly for good."n- John Coltrane in 1966, as told Frank KofskynnOne afternoon in November 1966, Frank Kofsky took the train out to Long Island. He was about to spend the day with John Coltrane. Kofsky brought his tape recorder and what we get to hear is the conversation the two men had as they drove through town and made a few stops along the way.nnColtrane had moved to Huntington, New York with his wife Alice and their children in 1964. They lived in a modest house on a quiet, tree-lined street. It was a home to raise a family. Coltrane had just turned 40. He would die from liver cancer less than a year later.nnDuring this episode Coltrane talks about moving to the country, setting up to practice, connecting with the sound of an instrument, Malcolm X, music as means of expressing that state of society, and how he wanted to change the world.nnMore Choice Coltranen"I keep a horn on the piano and I have a horn in my bedroom."n"Music, being expression of the human heart or the human being itself, does express just what is happening."n"In any situation that we find in our lives, when there’s something we feel should be better, we must exert effort to try and make it better."nnHere the full interview: http://PacificaRadioArchives.orgnnGet more Coltrane on our website including Coltrane the saint, nmore quotes from this one of Coltrane's final interviews, his battles with Miles Davis, and the super quartet behind Coltrane's "A Love Supreme"nnhttp://blankonblank.org/interviews/john-coltrane-rare-interview-jazz-saxophone-spiritualitynnSubscribe for new episodes every other Tuesday (it's free):nhttp://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=blankonblanknnExecutive Producer: David GerlachnAnimator: Patrick SmithnAudio Producer: Amy DrozdowskannWatch our previous episodes:nnRay Bradbury on Madmennhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ciQoov55fMnnDolly Parton on Getting Dirtynhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RJPc9DXnysnnLou Reed on Guns & Ammonhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jcd9BS2Ty_MnnBB King on The Bluesnhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tIphqWYu_snnElliott Smith on Freaksnhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAP3sYaaBv4nnRobin Williams on Masksnhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PHGmIAv4DcnnWayne Coyne on Living with Deathnhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJXU7f0hI30nnMaya Angelou on Con Mennhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VybIJEA41yknnBette Davis on The Sexesnhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RNnTUyrxzWYnnMichael Jackson on Godlinessnhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoCa3Po7M_8nnJimi Hendrix on The Experiencenhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nK2lfs_uiwknnMeryl Streep on Beautynhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OG_T5dwnJuMnnPhilip Seymour Hoffman on Happinessnhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Osn8rjkPyYMnnDavid Bowie on Stardustnhttp://youtu.be/lFIDXXDsxAonnGene Wilder on The Truthnhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PUW2POEjX4nnJohn Lennon on Lovenhttp://youtu.be/DmvmnYEy9NYnnJohnny Cash on The Gospelnhttp://youtu.be/ALGi0tcFCcwnnHeath Ledger on Role Playingnhttp://youtu.be/qDRUzbAa6lInnTupac on Life and Deathnhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6x2FqX2YZwsnnKurt Cobain on Identitynhttp://youtu.be/C1Z2BkZaOQcnnJanis Joplin on Rejectionnhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdF4b1_LQnQnnBarry White on Making Lovenhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmJIlqjYGkwnnMaurice Sendak on Being a Kidnhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvtgqJTVVhEnnCarol Burnett on Finding Homenhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aixlc1DJZiEnnGrace Kelly on JFKnhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5EOuppHoTMnnFarrah Fawcett on Stiletto Powernhttp://youtu.be/8Eskff0RUQ8nnBeastie Boys on Being Stupidnhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4mx2P...nnDavid Foster Wallace on Ambitionnhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5R8gd...nnWilt Chamberlain on Tall Talesnhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxLiVn...nnLarry King on Getting Seducednhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1yD8Pz...nnJim Morrison on Why Fat is Beautifulnhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhszZ5...nnMusic You HeardnJohn Coltranen“In a Sentimental Mood”n“My Favorite Things”nnPhotosnDutch National Archives nImpulse Records / Charles Stewart Less
