A British boy suffering from cancer, whose parents were briefly detained in Spain after taking him there from England, left hospital in Malaga this morning to seek specialist treatment in the Czech Republic. Five-year-old Ashya King, who has a severe brain tumour, was accompanied by his parents. The King family removed Ashya from hospital in England without medical consent, sparking an international police search on suspicion of negligence. They published several videos defending their actions, saying they wanted to sell their flat in Spain to fund proton beam treatment. On Friday a British court ruled that the boy could travel to the Czech Republic. The Proton Therapy Centre in Prague offers technology is not widely available in the UK. Cancer specialists say although it can work, proton beam treatment is ineffective in many cases. Ashya’s British doctors had argued that conventional chemotherapy would be better in his case, but say they have always been open to potential treatment in Prague and will support clinicians involved in his future care. Spanish King Felipe’s brother-in-law Iñaki Urdangarín could be jailed for up to 15 years. Urdangarín is accused with 15 others of embezzling around 5.6million euros of public funds. The anti-corruption prosecutor in the so-called Noos trial is expected to ask the judge to jail Urdangarín and clear Princess Cristina of any criminal wrongdoing. The king’s sister, who may have benefited from her husband’s alleged graft, will be asked to return some of the embezzled funds. The trial has angered a public facing unemployment of twenty-four percent and tough austerity measures. The support of Spain’s monarchy has plunged after several scandals in recent years. Both Cristina and her husband have denied any wrongdoing. Less

Former Spanish King Juan Carlos is facing a paternity suit after the country’s supreme court agreed to examine a Belgian woman’s claim that she is his illegitimate daughter. The case is being heard now because the king lost his immunity from prosecution after his abdication last year. He has 20 days to respond to the suit. Forty-eight year-old Ingrid Sartiau is one of two claimants highlighted by the Spanish newspaper El Mundo – the case of Alberto Sola has already been rejected by the court for not meeting legal requirements. Sartiau has told the court that her mother had an affair with Juan Carlos in the 1960s while he was married and a crown prince. Royal officials have refused to comment. Juan Carlos, the father of King Felipe VI, abdicated last year in a move aimed at restoring the monarchy’s popularity. A string of scandals had identified the royals as out of touch, including a secret luxury elephant-hunting trip by Juan Carlos in Africa at the height of Spain’s economic crisis. Although King Felipe consistently scores highly in opinion polls, his family continues to draw unwelcome headlines including his sister, Cristina de Borbon who is due to stand trial on tax fraud charges. The new Saudi Arabian King Salman has named his half-brother Muqrin as successor to the throne. Salman, who is believed to be 79, has already appeared on state television to address the nation and express his condolences over the demise of his half-brother King Abdullah. He died early on Friday after suffering from a short bout of pneumonia. Abdullah, thought to be 90, had ruled Saudi Arabia as king since 2006, but had run the country as de facto regent for a decade before that. King Salman has been part of the ruling clique of princes for decades and is thought likely to continue the main thrusts of Saudi strategic policy, including maintaining the alliance with the United States and working towards energy market stability. One of Salman’s first actions was to immediately appoint his half-brother Muqrin as his crown prince and heir; the rapid move is aimed at warding off fears of a succession crisis at a moment when Saudi Arabia faces unprecedented turmoil on its borders. Tributes have been paid around the world to Saudi King Abdullah who has died. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, many senior dignitaries praised his rule as courageous for pushing through cautious changes. The International Monetary Fund’s Managing Director Christine Lagarde said: “He was a great leader who implemented a lot of reforms at home and in a very discreet way was a strong advocate of women. Saudi Arabia is for traders, a place where women don’t play quite the same role, but his Majesty was determine to actually change the situation.” Sentiments shared by the former Israeli President Shimon Peres who described him as a thoughtful leader. “He is a real loss for Saudi Arabia and a real loss for the Middle East peace process. He was an experienced leader and a wise king,” said Peres. China was also full of praise for Abdullah, welcoming his efforts to stabilise the region. A foreign ministry spokeswoman said: “King Abdullah was an outstanding leader in who was committed to promting the country’s development and protecting peace and stability in the Middle East and Gulf region.” Less
