Old style GPS units mean riders have to look away from the road, and sometimes even stop to check where they’re going. Russian start-up company LiveMap wants to change that with its smart helmet prototype equipped with a built-in navigation system. The directions appear on the helmet’s see-through display directly in the rider’s field of vision thanks to voice control and GPS navigation, so he can see directions without having to fiddle with another device or look away from the road. The display is transparent enough to not obscure his vision. “When it comes to security, the idea is to create a helmet that enables the rider to navigate while driving without needing to stop and type in a new address on his mobile phone, so he can just do it through voice recognition, by saying “Madison Avenue” for example, and the computer works out the route,” says LiveMap CEO Andrei Artishchev. Its developers say the advantage over other such helmets being tested on the market is that this one is smaller and lighter. Already on sale over the internet, the American Skully AR-1 is being touted as the world’s smartest motorcycle helmet, with its 180 degree rear view camera that projects what’s happening behind the rider, too. But there is one down-side according to its Russian rivals. “There is a difference in the parametres between our helmet and the Skully. The American helmet is much heavier, I think it weighs almost two kilos, and the Russian one weighs 1,4 kilos. So, there is a big difference. Anything that weighs more than 1,5 kilos is not a helmet,” says Anatoly Sukhov, editor-in-chef at Russia’s Moto Magazine. While it doesn’t offer a rear view, some prefer LiveMap’s to Skully’s display system, saying it’s easier to see and less distracting. Both retail for around US$ 1500. Safer riding is also a concern when it comes to horse-riding. With the aim of enhancing the performance of racehorses and reducing the risk of injury to both man and animal, a research team from the Royal Veterinary College in England has equipped riders and horses with sensors. Thanks to the data collected, they are able to compare the riding style of more experienced jockeys with that of novice riders and are hoping to thereby establish the optimal riding position. “We have 14 inertial measurement units on the jockey and the horse. So they basically measure the movement of the different parts of the jockey relative to the horse. We’re also measuring the forces within the stirrup so we can look at the symmetry of the forces that coincide with the various movements that are measured,” says Dr. Anna Walker, who is leading the research. While the data is still being collected and analysed, it’s hoped it will lead to improved teaching methods that will ultimately help apprentice jockeys progress faster, the ultimate goal being to reduce the risk of injury. “If you increase the rate of training, therefore they gain experience or improve their technique very quickly, then you reduce the risk of falls. And if the jockey is more balanced, the horse is more balanced because it’s not having to constantly counteract a wobbly jockey,” says Dr. Anna Walker. While definite figures are difficult to find, it’s estimated that the risk of serious injury is approximately the same for a horse-rider as for a motorcyclist. But today its discoveries about the universe are legendary. “The telescope has exceeded all of our expectations, scientifically, the way it has impacted the culture, the way the people have adopted it as its own telescope. Baltimore’s riots add to the United States’ record of violent social unrest in past months. Again, the common denominator is inequality. The west coast city within an hour’s drive of the White House is the country’s sixth largest by population. It has shrunk since 1950, from almost one million to now 620,000 — 63% black. The riots erupted in Sandtown-Winchester, the neighbourhood where Freddie Gray lived (who died of spinal injuries while in police custody). There, one adult in five doesn’t have a job and half the households earn less than 25,000 dollars — the poverty line. In the world’s richest nation, per capita, studies show high rates of adolescent mental health suffering, substance abuse, exposure to violence, notably sexual, and a lack of social support in Baltimore. The poverty rate is around 24%, while in the state of Maryland where Baltimore is the largest city, the poverty rate is well below half that, at 9.8%. President Obama has underscored similarities between Baltimore and Ferguson, Missouri, which ran riot last August, citing “...too many instances of what appears to be police officers interacting with individuals, primarily African-American, often poor, in ways that raise troubling questions.” Obama said: “We can’t just leave it to the police. For many in Britain, the European Union’s cherished principle of free movement is perhaps the most controversial. Net migration – thanks largely to the numbers coming from other EU countries – is tantamount to a new medium-sized city being built in the UK each year. Some say “we’re full up!” Believe it or not, Britain once had a virtual open-door policy towards immigrants. After World War II they began coming: from the Caribbean and the Indian subcontinent – but also from Europe: from Poland, Italy, France and Ireland. One historian said more migrants arrived in Britain in the early sixties alone, than had previously disembarked in the whole of the 20th century. They’ve not always been made welcome, but the UK has often been very happy to use their much-needed skills and labour – and this continued after the ex-communist states joined the EU. Euronews went to London to get to the bottom of the great immigration debate. In London’s Dalston, the population are as diverse as their opinions. “They’re trying to change the face of England with immigration,” said UKIP voter Derek. “You go out to different places in the country and see it, how all of a sudden English people are becoming second-class citizens in their own homes.” A British native with Caribbean roots, Kimo sees things differently. “I believe the immigration debate is the promotion of politics of fear and division in this country and it serves no one political party any good,” he explained. “What makes this country unique and great is its ability to integrate people from all sectors of the world, all socio-economic backgrounds who all come together for the common good to make this country great.” For others the question of immigration is a non-issue. “Personally I don’t think I have been particularly affected by it. It’s something I don’t really think about,” said London resident Yetunde. While another London resident, Mark thinks the debate is not as clear cut. “I think its a good fix to say let’s get our workforce, we’ve got to keep our costs down for business, bring some people in who’ll work for a lower wage. But I don’t think the long-term has been thought through.” In London euronews correspondent Joanna Gill asks whether, “immigration is an economic boon or burden? With increasing numbers of migrants coming to the UK the question has divided the country. We’re in London to get to the bottom of the great immigration debate and to put some faces to the figures.” Jakub Krupa, (25) is a Polish citizen who’s been living in London for three years and also coordinates the Poles in the UK campaign . A graduate of the London School of Economics he now works as a journalist and PR person in the City of London. As a Polish citizen he is part of the largest group of migrants from the EU living in the UK. Much has been made in the tabloid media about Polish workers settling in Britain in recent years. This has also given fuel to the right-wing UKIP party who argue that the EU’s freedom of movement principle allows mass immigration with no control possible over the numbers and they are calling for Britain to leave the EU to end the influx. Ahead of the elections the debate on immigration has focused on the gains and drains the country. To offer a counter argument to the negative images portrayed by some media outlets many migrants have taken it upon themselves to show how they chip in, and one way was to give blood via the controversially titled Bloody Foreigners campaign as Jakub explains. “If someone comes here he is a bloody foreigner coming here, stealing jobs, things like that. Now we want to show it’s not only about that but it’s also about contributing in a positive way.” This may be a dramatic way to make a point, but there is substance to the argument. Research from professors at London universities UCL and LSE shows that once the costs of government spending on migrants is calculated they actually generate £55 per second for the exchequer and as they are younger they are rejuvenating the ageing population. Dr Carlos Vargas-Silva, Senior Researcher at Migration Observatory Oxford University explains that: “Migrants tend to be young and they tend to come for work reasons, they tend to be in the workforce and to be working. So that means they make little use of public services and benefits and as a result they have a very positive contribution to the economy.” But this is not the whole story. For British natives in low-skilled work, there is a small negative impact on wages and migrants could be edging them out of jobs. Equally with more people comes more pressure on public services especially in the densely populated south-east of England. “One of the problems is just congestion, school places, the children whose first language is not English so you need different teachers to teach in the classes,” explained Dr Vargas-Silva. “You have the NHS (National Health Service) and all migrants have access to NHS services for free. So they are going to make use of this, so it may increase waiting times in different hospitals.” For Jakub even this negative impact is a question of structural problems in public services rather than an effect of immigration. “Obviously some people might be confused with migrants living around them building new shops, new places, speaking different languages but you need to explain to them the wider problems, that the problems with the NHS are structural problems, are not caused by the migrants, they’re just revealed by the migrants.” Even with research showing a possible long-term impact on services, the figures show migrants are less dependent on state support than British born citizens. Since 2000, migrants were 43% less likely than native British citizens to receive benefits or tax credits and 7% less likely to live in social housing. With many migrants working in public services, they cost less to the public purse, and yet 77% of the British public want to see immigration reduced. Why the scepticism? Fear inducing tabloid headlines coupled with the rise of UKIP has meant that one side of the debate has received more airtime. But even then the picture is skewed. “In London people tend to favour immigration whereas in rural areas they tend to be more opposed,” explained Dr Vargas-Silva. “That means in the areas with more migrants there is a more positive view of migration, in areas with less migrants there’s more opposition.” UKIP had hoped to capitalise on the deep divisions over immigration but the issue became less pressing as the campaign wore on. After rattling the political establishment coming first in European Elections in 2014, UKIP expected to feed off this success, but recent polls indicate that their road to Westminster may be rockier than predicted. JACKSONVILLE, FL (WJXTCNN) - It's a sound no parent likes to hear: a child screaming out of fear and possibly pain from the dentist's chair.Going to the dentist is a rite of passage, of sorts, but what's alleged to have happened at the hands of 78-year-old Dr. Howard Schneider was not.For the past three weeks, there have been daily protests outside his practice. One parent was so angry, she attacked him outside his office.Schneider said he's done nothing wrong. The firestorm started after Brandi Motley wrote about the day she took to her 6-year-old daughter, Bri'el, to Schneider to have one tooth pulled.On the day of surgery in December 2014, Motley said she was not allowed to sit with her daughter. "The nurse suggested that it's best - that kids act better when parents aren't in the room. So they said we don't like parents back here for the procedures," she said.Motley said she sat in the waiting room for three hours until the waiting turned to worrying. "Finally, the nurse came and got me and she said there had been an incident," Brandi Motley said. "(Bri'el) was hyperventilating. She had marks all over her, blood all over her."Angry and unable to get an clear explanation of what had happened, Motley says she and Bri'el left to rush to an emergency room. "In the parking lot, she takes her gauze out, and I notice that all of her teeth were gone," Motley said. She said Schneider pulled seven teeth. According to her mom, Bri'el said Schneider hit and choked her, so she called police - twice. Although department records indicate officers responded and according to police logs one wrote a report, Jacksonville Sheriff's office told CNN "no report was written on this incident."Initially, no attorney would take her case. "That's when I decided to put her pictures on my Facebook and tell everybody what happened," Motley said. Her story went viral, and soon, other parents posted their children's pictures and claims of unwanted procedures and abuse at the hands of Schneider."I kept reading and reading until the name Doctor Howard, and I knew that was the same dentist," Barry said. Amanda Barry is deaf. Her five-year old son, Dominic, is blind in one eye. Barry says Dominic was referred to Schneider for a crown in March.The boy is part of a civil suit accusing Schneider of assault and battery. According to the complaint, "two front teeth were removed for unknown reasons" and that Dominic was "terrified and told stories of the dentist choking (him).""I screamed for my mom," Dominic said. "That's what bothers me the most," Amanda Barry said. "Because I'm deaf, I can't hear anything, and to know that my child was calling for me and my name and I couldn't help him, it makes me feel like lousy. It makes me feel lousy."Bri'el's family at one point was part of that same lawsuit but has since withdrawn. They are now pursuing a medical malpractice suit, represented by attorney John Phillips.Phillips says he also represents dozens of Schneider's former patients, most of whom rely on Medicaid for health insurance. "Medicaid paid him per tooth," attorney Gust Sarris said. "So, can I cap a tooth twice? Yes. Can I then pull it? Yes. Can I then successfully obtain benefits for all three? Absolutely."Schneider has made a fortune from Medicaid. State records show Schneider has received nearly $4 million in Medicaid reimbursements in just the last five years.The Florida Attorney General's office has launched a criminal Medicaid fraud investigation, and the claims stretch back decades. A 1995 malpractice suit was settled out of court. It claimed Schneider unnecessarily placed 16 crowns in the mouth of a 3-year-old. The boy's family was paid $7,500 as part of the settlement agreement.A second malpractice suit was filed that year. The documents from that case have been destroyed, and the outcome is unclear. "Somebody who is performing procedures that children don't need, pulling teeth that he knows should still be in the child's mouth. In some cases, we even have where many procedures were done, except what they came in for," Sarris said.Sarris said he represents Dominic and dozens of Schneider's former patients. This month, he filed the potential class action suit against Schneider on behalf of these children, claiming "patterns of abuse of his child patients" - an accusation that has been made before.According to a 2013 police report, the mother of a 5-year-old patient was allowed to sit with daughter during a procedure. The mother told police Schneider grabbed her daughter's face" and "slapped her face several times." The officer acknowledged a "small scratch behind the victim's left ear."Schneider denied touching the girl. He was not arrested. Instead, the officer referred the mother to the state attorney's office. Nurses who were in the room later "denied that anything inappropriate happened."Prosecutors decided not to file charges because of an "improbability of conviction at trial." CNN made no fewer than five calls to Schneider's office to arrange an interview. None were returned. "They're not correct and that's it. I want to be left alone, OK?" Schneider said when asked in his practice's parking lot about the charges.Despite the calls to police, the malpractice settlements and the fraud investigation, Schneider is still free to practice. His license is clear. According to the Florida Board of Dentistry, he's not been disciplined by the state.For these parents, that's unacceptable. They want Schneider "to go to jail, to never work on any other kids, to shut his doors so he can never do this again." According to a statement from the Federation of International Motorcycling (FIM) yesterday, Zamri Baba, 31, who rode for MuSASHi Boon Siew Honda Racing was hit by a rider after he had crashed onto the gravel bed during Round 2 of the 2015 FIM Asia Road Racing Championship. Zamri Baba was immediately rushed to the hospital situated about 10 minutes from the circuit for medical attention. Besides Zamri Baba, a second incident occurred during the SuperSports 600cc Race 2 when Indonesian rider M. Fadly Immammuddin of Astra Honda Racing and Thailand's Jakkrit Sawangswat of AP Honda Thailand collided after the chequered flag. Both riders suffered multiple leg injuries and were also immediately sent to the hospital where they are now receiving treatment and reported to be in stable condition. A recent congress of world religious leaders in the capital of Kazakhstan is one example of new efforts to find solutions. The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, urged the delegates for their help. “The scourge of violence in the name of religion calls for concerted action by governments, religious communities, civil society and the media,” he said. And that is one of the key concerns: that security forces are often alone in the fight against extremism. Sayed Mohammad Al-Musawi from the World Ahlul Bayt Islamic League told euronews: “We have to deal with it (at) the grassroots, which is the ideology, which has been spread by the misunderstanding of religion. “It is not only security and the military attacks. No, we have to tackle it through tackling the wrong ideology.” That means religions publicly disputing extremist messages, and setting an example through their own internal and inter-religious relations. Talib Mohammad Al-Shehhi, an Islamic affairs advisor to the United Arab Emirates government, said: “Everyone who has an idea, who has a conviction, can record what they want and broadcast it to the entire world, and this is the great problem in our society.” Dr. Kala Acharya from the Somaiya Vidyavihar educational institute in Mumbai in India told euronews: “What the political leaders should do is find the camps where military training to fight against other religions is given to the youth, where they are brainwashed, and to put a ban on such camps.” The Russian Orthodox Church is one of those calling for a special UN body dedicated to the problem, something it proposed years ago. Rev. Dimitry Safonov, head of inter-religious contacts at the Russian Orthodox Church, said: “Unfortunately our voice was not heard, the position was not supported. The authorities are monitoring at least 100 people thought to have been in contact with a 17-year-old boy, Abraham Memaigar, who died on Sunday in Margibi County, about 50 kilometres east of the capital Monrovia. He had originally been misdiagnosed with malaria. Health officials are quoted as saying two more cases were identified on Wednesday, raising fears that hidden pockets of the virus may remain. In the village of Nedowein, the dead teenager’s home has been placed under quarantine and health officials wearing boots and rubber gloves went house-to-house confining people to their homes. A health authority spokesman in Margibi County, Cestus Tarpeh, told the AFP news agency that the two new cases had been in contact with the boy. Dr Moses Massaquoi, case management team leader for Liberia’s Ebola task force, said that the people under surveillance included 14 health workers who have placed themselves in quarantine. Investigations are underway into the cause of the latest cases and the authorities say more are likely. Local residents said those showing symptoms of the virus had recently eaten a dog, a practice common in Liberia. Inquiries are also trying to establish whether the fresh outbreak came from a neighbouring country. “I think our people know we just have to come back to what we were doing before. We were doing hand washing, we were very careful, no hand shaking. Now we have to be more careful than ever before,” said William Cooper, a district representative. The new cases come amid anger among health workers claiming they are owed hazard benefits unpaid since Liberia was declared Ebola-free on May 9. Some stormed the health ministry in Monrovia on Wednesday. Liberia helped control the spread of the virus with the help of a US military mission, which ended in February, and millions of euros in aid. Ebola is spread through bodily fluids and is most contagious in the late stages when victims can suffer bleeding, vomiting and diarrhoea. Since last year Ebola has claimed more than 11,000 lives in the worst outbreak ever, nearly all of the fatalities occurring in the three neighbouring countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
