And it has gained a powerful following among policymakers starting in the Reagan years. n nBut is it true? n nIn her work and in this interview, Prof. Mariana Mazzucato of the University of Sussex in the U.K. debunks the pervasive myth of a lumbering, bureaucratic state versus a dynamic, innovative private sector. In fact, as Mazzucato shows in her latest book, The Entrepreneurial State, the opposite is true. Typically the private sector only finds the courage to invest in breakthrough technologies after a so-called “entrepreneurial state” has made the initial high-risk investments. nnThis can be seen today in the green revolution, the development of biotech and pharmaceutical industry, and the technological advancements coming out of Silicon Valley. Mazzucato argues that by not giving due credit to the state’s role in this process we are socializing the risks of investing, while privatizing the rewards.n nSo who benefits from the state’s role in the development of technology? Consider Apple’s iPhone and Google’s search engine. In both cases these extremely popular consumer products benefitted mightily from state intervention. For the iPhone, many of the revolutionary technologies that make it and similar devices “smart” were funded by the U.S. government, such as the global positioning system (or GPS), the touchscreen display, and the voice-activated personal assistant, Siri. And for Google, the creation of its algorithm was funded by the National Science Foundation. Plus, of course, there’s the development of the Internet, another government funded venture, which enables the iPhone to be a valuable tool and makes Google searches possible.n nBut despite the fact that these companies directly benefitted from taxpayer-funded technologies, they and other high tech outfits have strategically “underfunded” the tax purse that helped lead to their success. This is a troubling development.nnSo how should the government recoup the benefits from the fruits of its research? I talk to dogs. In preparing this book I spoke with dogs at length. Maybe I spoke more to dogs than with them. But they’re all dogs, that’s the thing. I know we all love our kennel club show we all go there. We obsess about whether our dog is a pug, Jack Russell terrier mix with corgi overtones and an oaky finish. An approachable little dog, whatever. They’re all dogs, okay. And so the idea of a purebred is just a human construct. There’s no such thing – in a sense there’s no such thing as a purebred dog. And that’s – I don’t have a problem with that. That’s the way it is. By the way you talk to any veterinarian and they’ll tell you that a mutt is a much healthier dog generally because they have this mix of genes, they’re not inbred, they haven’t made the same gene repeat too many times. And so it’s funny, it’s charming to me but there’s a great lesson to be learned. Dogs are a descendent either from wolves or from one ancestor before wolves. But what you and I think of as a modern wolf may or may not be the direct – what led to a modern dog.n nPeople talk about this as I’m writing the book. In the next five years it will probably be resolved. Somebody will come up with a definitive answer to that. But anyway, apparently these experiments were done with foxes which are just the coolest thing where the foxes that were friendlier, that they were more comfortable around people, they were allowed to approach, they were allowed to use human food. After just three generations they had floppy scritchable ears and they were much more like dogs. And it just shows you that dogs are almost certainly a result of a human wolf ancestor interaction. As we became friends with them they became friends with us and we have a dependency that’s charming. It’s enriched both the dog lives and the human lives. It’s really quite an insight and it’s a result of evolution. The other lesson to be learned from dogs for me is since they’re all dogs it’s just – if you have a dachshund and a Great Dane and they interact, can we say interact on Big Think? If they interact all you get is a dog. You don’t get any new thing, new species, you just get a dog. In the same way if a Papua New Guinean hooks up with a Swedish person all you get is a human. There’s no new thing you’re going to get. You just get a human. Japanese woman jumping the African guy, all you get is a human. They’re all humans. So this is a lesson to be learned. There really is, for humankind there’s really no such thing as race. There’s different tribes but not different races. I had in this short film the opportunity to capture glimpses, albeit experimental, of two of my most obsessive passions, cinema and ancient Egypt. The film has been screened in a couple of international film festivals in Europe and Egypt.nThrough the film technique, I try to express my ideas without distracting the viewer eyes/ears with unnecessary effects and narration. Every time I’m tackling the remote history of ancient Egypt in my films and even books, I find myself confronted with the challenge of how to shift my time-machine’s gear and travel (with the viewers) thousands of years back in time. That’s why the rather slow pace of my camera is both deliberate and of major significance to me. The aim obviously is to put the viewer in a contemplative mood, which could help him view/review Egypt anew (untainted by the long legacy of Hollywood’s fake stories of mummies, pharaohs and the tremendously misinterpreted story of the Israelite Exodus) nnI have chosen an ancient era of antiquity for my film, where people spoke differently, ate and drank differently, fought war and made money and even made love differently. They also believed in different creation stories/myths and worshipped different deities. They perceived the world differently and may be more profoundly than modern day man does. As a matter of fact the actual story of ancient Egypt is completely different from the (Biblical) one that has been propagated for more than two thousand years. nnThe cinema that tries to retell humanity’s ancient stories is bound to not only be different, but to also respect the time and cultural gap that were we not conscious of its depth, boundaries and maybe ambiguity; we would be bound to commit the double sin of misinterpreting the historical moment and eventually alienating/misinforming the viewers. nnIn my film, it is true that I’m celebrating the beauty and uniqueness of ancient Egyptian art, colossal monuments and mythology, but I’m also trying to reestablish the lost link between modern day Egyptians and their remote ancestral culture. I’m persistently pursuing that goal, in both my films and books, because I think the crisis of modern day Egyptian cinema, as well as Egyptian culture and geo-politics, is of lost identity. The same predicament applies to westerners as they try to bridge the (unbridgeable) gulf between the true history of ancient Egypt and the (tampered with) Biblical stories about the land of the Pyramids. They can grow just as large, if not bigger than, the parent species but not as big as the previously mentioned Ligers. Both ligers and tigons are capable of producing their own offspring, leading to confusingly-named hybrids such as ti tigons and ligers.nn2. Narwhals and Belugas are funny looking animals on their own, so to combine them is to create a really funny animals. The Narluga can be naturally created but extremely rare. There are more sightings appearing which many believe to be a product of global warming and the two species coming into contact morenn3. Another lion mix is this male leopard and lioness coming together and creating the Leopon. This wouldn't occur in the wild as the two don't cross paths naturally. Leopons appear to have the head and mane of a lion, and the body of a leopard.nn4. A Jaglion is an extremely cool and badass looking animal in all its glory and are very rare. The mating of a male lion and lioness is how they have come about. There has never been any sighted in the wild and these are the only ones known to exist.nnn5. The Wolphin is a creation of a male false killer whale and female bottlenose dolphin breeding. It is kind of a cheat hybrid as false killer whales are exactly that, false whales, and are actually classed as dolphins. But they still look crazy cool. They are occasionally spotted in the wild, and there is currently only one individual in captivity.nn6. The Liger is a huge animal and are the offspring of male lions and female tigers. They don't exist in the wild despite the legends of them doing so and are deliberately bred in captivity only. There is a myth that Ligers never stop growing their entire lives, which is untrue. They just grow to freakish sizes in their normal growth window. Ligers are the largest cat in the world. Hercules, the biggest individual Liger, weighed 922 pounds.nn7. A Grolar bear is nothing to be trifled with, mixing a polar bear and brown bear to create this beast. In the wild, most grizzlies and polars don't cross paths so they are very rare and most live in zoos. However, there have been a handful of confirmed sightings in the wild. In 2006, an Alaskan hunter shot one. They look pretty much like an even split between polar and grizzly bears. Behaviorally, they are closer to polar bears than to browns.nn8. The zubro is a cross between a domestic cow and a Bison and are much hardier than the domestic cow plus possess great strength. They were bred as a possible cattle replacement but the experiment died and there is now only one herd left living in Poland.nn9. The first domestic cat on the list is the Savannah cat, which is a cross between domestic cat and the wild Serval, a wild cat living in Africa. They are very big for domestic cats, the size of a dog in reality, and are also linked to their owners like a dog too. They have no fear of water like most cats and even play fetch.nn10. The coyote and wolf are actually very close, genetically speaking, as they only really split from each other as species around 300,000 years ago. The breed is a mix between the Eastern wolf and the common coyote, mixes with gray wolves are very rare due to genetic mix matching from evolutionnn11. If you ever want to rear an animal to produce some serious beef then the Beefalo is your go to guy. They were first conceived in the 1800s. They're heartier than cattle and do less eco damage to the grasslands they graze on too. The animal is a cross between the domestic cow and wild buffalo and the experiment of breeding has actually ravaged the natural gene pool of the wild buffalo, with only 5 herds naturally existing without cow genes mixed into them.nn12. This is a Hinny and is known as a reverse mule. Its when a male donkey and female horse mate. They would usually have a horse's head shape with the build and size of a donkey.nn13. A goat and a sheep are pretty similar; both graze all day, both have fur and both live most of their lives on farms or country hills. Usually, if a hybrid is conceived it doesn't make it to birth and would be a stillborn so they're very rarenn14. The first ever Cama was made in 1998 when a scientist in Dubai crossed a male camel and a female llama via artificial insemination. It was there for that pushed the experiment forward, with clippable camel fur being the goal. There are only 5 in the entire worldnn15. The first animal hybrid on the list is the Zebroid; there is no specific two animals needed to create the zebroid, it's simply a cross between a zebra and any other equine. The general makeup of the zebroid is the stature and physiology of the equine animal with some marking of the zebra around their bodies. Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky proposed a concrete model for the filtering processes (biases) of mainstream media, especially in the United States, called the propaganda model. They tested this empirically and presented extensive quantified evidence supporting the model. Communication scholar Robert W. McChesney, inspired in part by the work of Chomsky and Herman, has linked the failures of the mainstream press primarily to corporate ownership, pro-corporate public policy, and the myth of "professional journalism." He has published extensively on the failures of the mainstream press, and advocates scholarship in the study of the political economy of the media, the growth of alternative media, and comprehensive media policy reforms. Ben Bagdikian has also written about the takeover of biased media, with particular attention to the giant conglomerates that own them. He argues that because five large conglomerates own the majority of American media, politics and general media influence in America are in jeopardy.nnWhereas some alternative media theorists (e.g., Chris Atton) propose broad definitions of media alterity, parecon theorist and Z Magazine cofounder Michael Albert incorporates the politico-economic critique of mainstream media into his definition of alternative media. In answering the question "What makes alternative media alternative?" he suggests that alternative media institutions should feature an anti-corporate structure, not just alternative media content. Along these lines, Albert has criticized publications such as The Nation and the Village Voice for replicating corporate hierarchies and divisions of labor.[12]nWhile the Propaganda Model resonates in productive ways with the way in which media systems have developed in the United States context, this theory might fall short in describing the situation in nations outside of the American context. The Propaganda Model would have a hard time explaining nations with a weak communications infrastructure (somewhere like Zimbabwe), heavily funded and state sponsored public broadcasting television stations (such as Australia), or with a strong tradition of partisan print and televised journalism.nnThe alternative press consists of printed publications that provide a different or dissident viewpoint than that provided by major mainstream and corporate newspapers, magazines, and other print media.nFactsheet Five publisher Mike Gunderloy described the alternative press as "sort of the 'grown-up' underground press. Whole Earth, the Boston Phoenix, and Mother Jones are the sorts of things that fall in this classification."[13] In contrast, Gunderloy described the underground press as "the real thing, before it gets slick, co-opted, and profitable. The underground press comes out in small quantities, is often illegible, treads on the thin ice of unmentionable subjects, and never carries ads for designer jeans."[13]nAn example of alternative media is tactical media, which uses 'hit-and-run' tactics to bring attention to an emerging problem. They have released several toolkits freely to the global community, including NGO In A Box South Asia, which assists in the setting up the framework of a self-sustaining NGO, Security-In-A-Box, a collection of software to keep data secure and safe for NGOs operating in potentially hostile political climates, and their new short form toolkit 10 Tactics, which "... provides original and artful ways for rights advocates to capture attention and communicate a cause".nnIn many countries around the world, specific categories of radio stations are licensed to provided targeted broadcasts to specific communities, including community radio and low-power FM (LPFM). Such stations typically broadcast with less wattage than commercial or public/state-run broadcasters, and are often non-commercial and non-profit in nature. In the United States, a special class of stations known as low-power FM (LPFM) stations were first authorized by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in January 2000. These stations are authorized to provide non-commercial, educational broadcasting and cannot operate with an effective radiated power of more than 100 watts.
