The driving force behind Short Stuff™ is to create short animated films from ideas our staff pitch and then develop – ideas we think are funny and interesting, and ultimately reflect and hone our collective studio voice. "The fun thing about our Short Stuff™ projects is that the entire studio has opportunities to contribute and try out new skill sets that the schedules for client projects typically don't allow. People take on new and different roles as they pitch in to help make the shorts happen. "This project was pitched by Kam Gates, who was a staff CG animator at the time, based on an idea of his and his long-time friend and writer Allan Turner. At its heart it's a creation myth, only this world has a creator of questionable benevolence.nn"The final story stemmed from bouncing ideas back and forth about what this creator of mountains would do if he made a slight mistake, how he would correct it and what the consequences might be. Have you ever stepped on an anthill? "Giving the world a tactile feeling that was also graphic in nature was the constant challenge. This applied not only to the environment but also the main character, composed entirely of rocks. He needed to be expressive and empathetic for the viewers to connect with him, while at the same time feeling completely rigid and imposing as a massive bundle of rocks. "Kam has a background in sculpture, so using actual rocks he gathered from where he grew up in Lake of the Woods, Ontario, the initial design was conceived.nn"Scale and rigging of the character [were the main technical challenges]. The first hurdle was to make the character move in a way which felt more like plate tectonics than bones and muscle. This involved sliding rocks instead of bending joints and is a unique challenge to make the rigging of the body feel both natural and solid. "Next, the world had to feel massive to telegraph the character's physical scale. The number of trees built to fill the forest is mind-boggling. We even added trees to his body. And then a lot of work was done to destroy all of those trees." She relied on secretaries to help transcribe her ideas onto paper and was a prolific writer on topics of philosophy, herbal medicine, the natural world, and a noted composer of hauntingly beautiful chants.nHildegard became a well-regarded authority and the Mother Superior of her convent. Around 1135, at age 42, she undertook a series of visionary symbolic paintings in unmistakable mandala-forms. While she did not make the illustrations herself, it is thought that she oversaw their production. These cosmic memories occur in myth and archetypes we readily recognize. The pictures were thought to be as strong or stronger than the words themselves. There is a gesltalt immediacy, what Hindu's refer to as darshan, meaning the simultaneous act of seeing and being seen by a deity.nnShe created a drawing, or illumination, in her manuscript Scivias (Know the Ways), circa 1140--50, of her defining vision, in which the great span of the universe revealed itself to her in a trance as "round and shadowy...pointed at the top, like an egg...its outermost layer of a bright fire."nnHildegard's visions led her to channel cosmic laws into illuminations and illustrate invisible concepts such as ethers, air, and wind. She assigns meaning to these elements to represent such virtues as atonement, righteousness, and moderation.nnCentral to her mandala paintings is the understanding of a 'cosmic equilibrium' and a reverence for all life. In her use of 'quartering of the circle' we recognize the four elements (fire, air, water and earth), an archetypal depiction also used by Native American sand painters for the four sacred directions. Her concept of Viriditas, the Greening, was a precursor to our ecology movement. She described this power as the agent of the God, a divine vitality, that was the animating life-force within all creation. This 'Greenness' was the very expression of Divine Power on Earth.nnnnAnonymous 4 is a female a cappella quartet, based in New York City. Their main performance genre is medieval music, although they have also premiered works by living composers such as John Tavener and Steve Reich. Couldn't they have done something that did not require that cost? Our ancestors, recorded their knowledge in the hopes that those left behind would never forget the nightmares. Few yet stand who would recall these legends and that might warn us of the writhing serpent that encircles the seas or the giant birds that soar in the skies above. nnAs the sands of mortal time trickle ever onward into the final hours of our oblivion, these stories, once revered and embraced by all, have been transformed from legend and into myth. Hallowed halls, where sacrificial fires once burned, now lay empty and godless, standing only as stark reminders of the last will and testament of our fore-bearers.nnWhy then do we know so little about those that shaped us from the primordial void? Where did they go and why did they leave us behind to wallow in the darkness? Will we ever see them again and if we do, will they forgive us our impiety and lead us back into the light?nnThe beginning of the end was marred with tragedy. Extinct volcanoes began erupting throughout the Andes. Freak blizzards covered Europe in blankets of impenetrable snow and ice. The seas and oceans became impassable due to massive storms and giant whirlpools. Around the world, the natural order was changing. nnDespite calls for peace and cooperation, global political and religious leaders failed to prevent the unrest and upheaval. Riots erupted across the world as mankind prepared for the end of days. Sightings of strange, unidentifiable creatures appeared almost overnight, leading to the creation of local militias to protect the cities.nnAt the dawn of humanities final days, the choice remained clear, we must fight as a unified front if we were to secure our future. It was the first time in living memory where both personal and national ambitions were replaced with the essence of survival. nnDespite our brightest minds and steadfast resolution, it was not enough to stem the tide of defeat. City by city, the creatures marched, massacring all those that resisted. Those that survived found themselves in refugee camps that were rampant with cholera, dysentery and typhoid. There was no hope, only despair and fear.nnWhat once were highways, now lie as ruins, where the strong prey on the weak. Roaming bandits hunt stragglers down and pick clean the bodies for anything of value. Food is scarce and those that travel these roads do so at great risk. Small groups of settlers choose to brave these conditions in search of new lands to call home.nnSeven months after 'The Return', small villages have sprouted up among the ruins of ancient cities and have begun to once again flourish. Rumors exist of self-proclaimed prophets learning to speak the old languages of dead civilizations. They claim to offer new covenants with their gods and offer peace and protection in exchange for devotion.nnProphets are locked in violent conflict with each other as a battle rages to determine who will be the new ruler of mankind and which gods will be in favor.
