Polling stations are ready to open their doors to over 5.5 million people across the Spanish region of Catalonia on Sunday in an election that is considered by pro-separatist parties as a proxy-vote on independence. The campaign has been split down the middle between parties in favour or against secession from Spain. Polls in recent weeks have given Catalan separatist parties a slight majority, which they claim gives them the authority to begin an 18-month process towards a full declaration of independence. Madrid has warned it will block any attempt to break away from Spain in the country’s constitutional court. On the streets of Barcelona opinion is evenly split. One middle man in Barcelona said he was “pleased because the elections represent a genetic debt” to his family. “It’s a shame they’re not all here to see what is happening. I’m more pleased for my parents and grandparents,” he adds. “I’m not in favour of secession,” explained one Barcelona resident. “I don’t want to split from Spain. I feel Catalan because I married a Catalan and my children and grandchildren are all from here. I want us to stay united and I don’t want us to split from Spain. If we’ve been together for so long, why now? I want this situation to be solved in the best way possible.” Failure by the pro-independence parties to achieve a majority of seats in the election would be a serious blow to the movement. A general election is due in Spain before the end of the year with the Catalan issue set to play an important role for whoever forms the next national government.   Less

Inés Arrimadas, Ciudadanos candidate in Catalonia told supporters that the regional president had got it all wrong: “Artur Mas called these elections because he said that most of Catalonia was with him but the majority of Catalans have given him the cold shoulder and we’re opting for coexistence.” Both Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s Popular Party (PP) and the opposition Socialists faired badly in Sundays poll. “What killed Tahir Elci was not the state, but statelessness…” These were the powerful words from Selahattin Demirtas, leader of Turkey’s pro-Kurdish HDP party following the death of the Kurdish lawyer and human rights activist. He joined thousands gathering in Diyarbakir to mourn Elci’s death. The funeral came a day after he was gunned down during a shootout between attackers and police in the troubled region; four months after a ceasefire between Kurdish rebels and Turkish security forces broke down. Elci’s coffin was carried through the city’s streets a day after he was gunned down during a shootout between attackers and police in the troubled region. Many of his colleagues travelled to the funeral from Bar Associations nationwide. Erdal Aydemir, former head of Bingol Bar Association, vowed to continue his work: “Let it be known that we will follow in his legacy of laws and rights. His legal struggle and his cause will not cease. I say this as a human rights defender, his co-worker and his friend. We will follow in his footsteps,” he said. Taiwan has gone to the polls in elections which could prove crucial to its future relations with China. Outgoing president Ma Ying-jeou and his Kuomintang party have sought to warm ties with Beijing. He is backing fellow KMT member Eric Chu to take over from him. The Mayor of New Taipei City has been the party chairman since October, 2015. But the Nationalists seem likely to lose out to the opposition Democratic Progressive Party — or DPP — led by Tsai Ing-wen. She has not made her stance towards China clear, however the party is, historically, pro-independence and does not recognise the two nations as part of “one China.” If the 59-year-old wins, it will be only the second victory for the party and Tsai will become the island country’s first female leader. Success for the DPP would see the island move away from decades of mostly KMT rule and edge towards a system where voters choose to transfer power between parties. With voters increasingly dissatisfied with the current administration’s friendly attitude towards Beijing and Taiwan going through recession, this is the outcome that seems the most likely.   Less

It makes them the third-biggest party in parliament after a four-year absence. The Socialists under Ivica Dacic remain the second biggest party with around 13% but with premier Vucic appearing to have an absolute majority, their time in a government coalition could be at an end. Having just signed for a €1.2bn loan from the IMF he will now have to implement numerous austerity measures. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused the pro-Kurdish HDP, parliament’s third-biggest party, of being the political wing of militants who’ve waged a three-decade insurgency in the country’s largely Kurdish southeast. The HDP denies such links and says its parliamentary presence could be all but wiped out if prosecutions go ahead. It has also made clear it will challenge the move at the constitutional court. In the third and final vote of a secret ballot, 376 MPs in the 550-seat parliament backed the plan to lift MPs immunity, a high enough level of support to change the constitution directly without needing to hold a referendum. The new law will allow prosecutors to pursue members of parliament who currently face investigation: that includes 138 deputies, of whom 101 are from the HDP and main opposition CHP. They seem to be concentrating their efforts on a motor home in the rear of the house. Also the house is now unoccupied. There was many people living there, now the house is apparently empty of all furniture, etc.We always heard loud music on the week-ends and it's now quiet except for all the noise that Serve-Pro has been making. Signs have been plastered all over the property but are unreadable from the fenced in property.
