Big Brother is watching you at Helsinki airport and tracking every move you make. The decision to install sensors which will be linked to mobile phones turned on to the wi-fi mode has raised concerns with civil liberty groups. The system is the first in the world which will track passengers’ movements in real-time from the car park to the departure gate updating them with information. “For us the main point is how to improve the customers’ experience, to improve the enjoyment factor as well as improving the fluency of movement inside the airport,” said Heikki Koski, deputy manager, Finavia the company which operates the airport. Around 15 million passengers a year use the airport, Finland’s largest and each one will be able to receive advertisements and marketing information if they choose to. “Well it would interest and benefit me to know how much time I have to make it to the gate, but I can live without the advertisements,” said one passenger. The operators say all data which is gathered is in aggregated form and cannot be passed on. “If the users will not be identified in this system, very few problems will arise, but if the users or anybody tracked in the airport can be connected to their identities then this system can become a threat to privacy,” explained Ville Oksanen, researcher of technology justice, Aalto University The technology was tested in a US department store where it was criticised for monitoring unwary customers. The company behind the new service says passenger privacy is, “extremely important” to them and that “the anonymous monitoring respects customers’ privacy”.   Less

Among the migrants, many women and children, some in need of medical care. Over the weekend, two would-be migrants died when a boat carrying nearly 300 people sank off the coast of Libya. The bodies were of a woman and a child around nine years of age. Since January, the Italian government has rescued 95,000 people fleeing from their countries. The aircraft completed a series of tests demonstrating its ability to operate safely and seamlessly with manned aircraft. The first series of manned/unmanned operations began this morning when the ship launched an F/A-18 and an X-47B. After an eight-minute flight, the X-47B executed an arrested landing, folded its wings and taxied out of the landing area. The deck-based operator used newly developed deck handling control to manually move the aircraft out of the way of other aircraft, allowing the F/A-18 to touch down close behind the X-47B's recovery. The soldiers will boost Iraqi forces fighting the militant group Islamic State following a request from Iraq’s government. Their role will be non-combat and it’s believed they could be in place before the end of the year. “It is being done now because the Iraqis have reached, they have demonstrated, the willingness and the skills to go after ISIL, so they have reached the point, where they need additional help and guidance,” Rear Admiral John Kirby told reporters. The new troops will train nine Iraqi army and three Kurdish Peshmerga brigades in several sites. They will join several hundred military advisers who are already assisting the Iraqi army. The Pentagon also announced the US military would be setting up what it called “advise and assist operations centres” outside Baghdad and the northern city of Irbil.   Less

Part 1; The Arizona State Forestry Division has released 20 video clips shot by crews fighting the Yarnell Fire last year on the day 19 firefighters were killed. Footage of the discovery of the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshot crew members' bodies was redacted, but the audio was left intact. Other video shows the concern of fellow firefighters and dramatic drives through a hellish landscape full of black skies, downed power lines and flames everywhere. The videos don't explain what went wrong, but they're an important, if not somewhat disturbing, addition to what the public knows about the worst tragedy in American wildland firefighting since 1933 .Despite early requests for all public records available in the investigation of the June 30, 2013, deadly incident, these videos had been kept hidden by the government until now. State officials say the U.S. Forestry Service just released the video to them following a records request. John Dougherty of Investigative MEDIA, (and former New Times writer), reports that the videos were released following an October 11 records request by him. The State Forestry Division released a statement on a web page with links to the videos: "On November 7, 2014, the following video clips were received by Arizona State Forestry through a Freedom of Information Act request to the US Forest Service. To be transparent with the public, the videos are presented exactly as they have been received. The redactions were done before these videos came into the possession of Arizona State Forestry." Google will renovate three huge hangars over an area of eight acres, with Hangar One being one of the largest free-standing structures on the planet. With plans to use the hangars for projects involving aviation, space exploration and robotics, Google is expected to invest at least $200 million in refurbishments and maintenance. Hangar One currently stands dormant, with its exterior stripped over recent years after testing positive for toxic chemicals leaking from the roof in 2003.
