On January 25, the leftist party Syriza emerged victorious in Greece’s national elections. Days later, Alex Tsipras, the new 40-year-old prime minister, formed a coalition government with a strong mandate to renegotiate Greece’s bailout terms and reduce its large debt pile, built up over the five-year financial crisis.nnTsipras and his team then engaged in bitter negotiations with the country’s international lenders. Athens sought to scrap the harsh measures attached to the bailout by describing the plight of austerity-hit Greeks as a “humanitarian crisis.” On February 20, a deal was clinched. The country’s loan agreement was extended by four months, giving Greece more breathing space to negotiate a better pact in the future, but also forcing Syriza to climb down on its pre-election promises.nnDespite the deal, Greece is still broke and needs European loans to avoid bankruptcy. The new government’s popularity is slowly declining and uncertainty as to how Syriza will live up to its many promises remains.nnFacing backlash from its own supporters, Syriza’s deal with the European Union has sparked angry demonstrations in Athens. For more than a year, cleaning women in Greece have been the symbol of the injustices of austerity. They started to protest after they lost their jobs due to budget cuts deemed necessary by the Finance Ministry to meet the conditions for the 240 billion euro EU-IMF bailout plan. For months they camped outside the finance ministry’s office demanding their jobs back. And then they voted for Syriza, the party which promised to re-hire them. It was a promise to right the wrongs that one cleaning woman, Sophia Tsagaropoulou, feels many Greeks have endured: “For five years, people have paid for a crisis they were not responsible for. During this crisis people who were earning lots of money continued earning lots of money, and even earned more. But the middle and lower class were not to blame for everything, but they are paying for it all. We were plunged from paradise into a living hell.” But working out how to clean up the “living hell” produced by austerity measures will be a tall orde Less

Mariano Rajoy has made his first state of the nation address in his 14 months as head of the conservative People's Party. But the message was one familiar with Spaniards. More sacrifices need to be made by a country ravaged by massive unemployment and tough austerity measures. Mariano Rajoy, Spanish Prime Minister: "There are no green shoots, passing clouds or early spring. The economic and social reality of our country is terribly tough and based on that we will act. This has just begun and the road left to achieve our great objective for this legislation -- job creation -- is still long. I insist, not a minute of rest." For the leader of the opposition Socialists, Spain's condition is critical and Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba believes the PP leader is wholly responsible for what he deemed a "disaster". "Six million people without work; but there is more: a fifth of Spanish people are at risk of poverty, 33.000 businesses closed during 2012, 8 million pensioners have to pay for their medicines for the first time, and millions of citizens don't believe in politicians anymore. This is the real state of the nation in February 2013. Less

The Ronald Reagan regime marked the beginning of America's deep turn to the right, the conversion of the government into an instrument of the rich to attack workers and the middle class, and much more than has made America into a basket case. Many of the lies he told have rarely been challenged by the corporate media or most politicians. After all, there's not a dime's worth of difference between the two parties when it comes to ignoring the people's needs, or those of the planet itself. (The two parties are actually one party with two aces to fool the masses.)nnAll they do is serve the interest of the world's plutocracy, while making people believe the war on terror, the eternal wars in the Middle East and elsewhere, the "austerity" measures at home, and all the rest of the horrors we see day after day are necessary and inevitable. Reagan, the big phony, began all that in earnest. Less
