A pro-government, anti-austerity rally outside the Greek parliament in Athens has attracted between 3,000 and 5,000 people, estimates suggest. Demonstrators chanted in support of newly-elected Finance Minister, Yanis Varoufakis. One slogan circulating was: “Merkel sees you and snaps like a twig. Well-played Yanis Varoufakis,” referring to the German Chancellor who has been a driving force behind Greece’s bailout measures. Spontaneously organised via social media, the gathering was the first major anti-austerity rally since the left-wing Syriza party came to power. The rally came after the European Central Bank announced it would push forward the date on which the eligibility of Greek bonds used as collateral would be restricted. We want to do as much as humanly possible – at least to sit down and talk about the issues in Greece.” The site of the protest in Syntagma Square has seen violent clashes in recent years as Greeks spoke out against the EU-imposed austerity measures. In sharp contrast, Thursday’s rally (February 5) was relatively calm. Giannis Giaginis, one of euronews’ correspondents in Athens told us corresponding demonstrations were held in all the major cities at the same time as the Athens rally. The Greek Syriza party was elected last month on a promise to roll back the crippling austerity measures in Greece's international bailout. While Syriza has taken power in Greece, the grassroots party Podemos is also quickly gaining popularity in Spain, Europe's fifth largest economy. On January 31, as many as 150,000 people rallied in Madrid to show support for the Podemos party, which translates into "We can." Podemos only became an official party last March, but a recent poll by El País found 28 percent of the population supports the party, enough to possibly win Spain's next general election. Last May, Podemos surprised many when it received 1.2 million votes and five seats in the European Parliament elections. The party grew out of the "indignados" movement that began occupying squares in Spain four years ago. The indignados rallied against austerity cuts, rising unemployment and Spain's political establishment. We are joined by Podemos Secretary General Pablo Iglesias, a 36-year-old political science professor and longtime activist who was elected to the European Parliament last year. The proposal submitted to Greece’s creditors reportedly includes tax increases, pension cuts, a reduction in military spending, and the privatization of public assets. It comes after Tsipras himself had urged the Greek people to reject creditors’ demands for further austerity. In exchange for the reforms, Greece would receive a three-year, $59 billion bailout package. Germany meanwhile appears to be yielding to demands to provide at least some measure of debt relief to Greece. European officials have expressed approval for the Greek offer ahead of a key meeting of European finance ministers on Saturday. The Greek Parliament is expected to vote on the bailout proposal today, just five days after an overwhelming 61 percent of Greek voters rejected similar terms. We speak to Mark Weisbrot, co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and bankers arrived for a meeting on Wednesday (July 22) as the country’s parliament prepared to vote on the second set of bailout measures – a condition for talks to begin aimed at keeping Greece in the euro. Tsipras is likely to need opposition votes again for measures parliament will vote on to prop up failed banks and speed up the justice system. The vote, which is due to take place late on Wednesday, are part of conditions to start talks on the 86 billion euro rescue deal. The government hopes the negotiations can then start this week and be wrapped up by August 20, but with divisions within Tsipras’ leftist Syriza party laid bare by the votes, snap elections are likely in the autumn. In the first signs of a return to normality, Greek banks reopened on Monday (July 20) and Athens paid debts due to the European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund. On Tuesday (July 21), Standard & Poor’s upgraded Greece’s sovereign credit rating by two notches, saying the country’s liquidity perspective had improved with bailout talks. But the fresh austerity measures are hard to accept in a country whose economy has contracted by a quarter during five years of crisis and where unemployment is more than 25 percent. The main public sector union ADEDY has called for a rally on Wednesday evening in front of parliament.   Less

Antonio Costa is more popular than the Socialist party that he leads. He goes into these elections enjoying the appreciation of Lisbon residents; he was their mayor from 2007 till spring this year. He mixes well with people of all walks of life. The former lawyer has been politically active since he was 14. While he proposes pulling back from austerity, he stresses that Portugal’s Socialists are not like Greece’s Syriza party, even though he openly welcomed the recent reconfirmation in power of the radical left coalition in Athens. The 54-year-old, descended from a family of intellectuals in the former Portuguese colony of Goa said: “What I feel all over the country, what I hear every day in the street is what every one of you also hears every day: there’s a huge desire for change on 4th October. There’s going to be a serious change in Portugal.” A main slogan for the Socialist campaign is: “There is another way.” The former Lisbon Mayor proposes boosting incomes, hiring and growth while scrapping austerity measures and cutting taxes, insisting that would still allow deficits to reduce in line with European rules. A former euro-MP and one of the 14 Vice-Presidents of the European Parliament, Costa is pro-Europe. He stepped down as an MEP in 2005 to become Minister of State and Internal Administration in the government of Jose Socrates. The Socialist Party chose Costa as its prime ministerial candidate in these elections last September. He won nearly 70 percent of the votes in a party ballot, defeating leader Antonio Jose Seguro, who then resigned. Costa had the support of the former prime minister but even that did not seem to detract from his eligibility, even though Socrates was detained as part of an investigation into allegations of corruption, money laundering and tax fraud. Socrates was sent to prison. Costa did not lose his cool in a television debate with his opponent in these elections, Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho, who fired off: “Your demagoguery clashes with reality.” Costa accused Coelho: “You wanted the Troika in Portugal! [referring to the European Commission, European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund who bailed Portugal out in 2011] I have a statement where you say with satisfaction the Troika is here at our request.” Actually, it was the previous Socialist government that asked for help. Costa would consider a coalition with the right or far left, he told one interviewer, only if there was an invasion from outer space.   Less

Athens is trying to negotiate new aid for a debt payment of €3.5bn due in two months’ time. Premier Alexis Tsipras told parliament Greece was sticking to its promises: “European leaders will receive a message tonight, the message that Greece fulfill its obligations, it undertakes its responsibilities. Tomorrow the other side must also take responsibility.” The new austerity measures were criticised by opposition lawmakers. They include a hike in VAT, more tax on fuel, tobacco and internet usage and the creation of a state privatisation fund. The ruling coalition voted in favour of the reforms with only one MP against some of the articles on the new privatisation fund and a contingency mechanism of spending cuts that will be activated only if Athens looks set to miss its fiscal targets.
