A former US police officer, who shot dead an African-American man in North Carolina, has formally been charged with murder. The grand jury decision is related to an incident that happened in April. Officer Michael Slager was filmed shooting Walter Scott eight times in the back over a minor traffic violation as the unarmed man was trying to run away. Slager was fired from the police department after the video went viral. He has been kept in custody since his arrest and could be handed down a life sentence or 30 years behind bars if found guilty. No date has yet been set for his trial. The incident sparked nationwide protests over racial profiling in the United States. Public anger growing in the US after an African-American woman who was a vocal opponent of police brutality, was found hanged in a Texas jail. Police initially reported that 28-year-old Sandra Bland committed suicide with a plastic bag inside her cell in the Waller County Jail. But her death is now being investigated as murder following protests and calls for a federal investigation from her relatives and supporters. She'd been incarcerated after allegedly assaulting a police officer during a July 10 traffic stop. Bland's family say she was anything but suicidal. The death has fueled additional tensions over the treatment of African-Americans in police custody. It comes roughly three months after the death of Freddie Gray, an unarmed 25-year-old African-American in Baltimore who died from injuries sustained while being transported in a police van. A new poll has found that over one-third of Americans are unhappy with the influence of the Israeli regime on US politics. The survey shows an overall drop in support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his policies. According to the poll, some 50 percent of the respondents who affiliate with the Democratic Party, expressed concern over the Israeli leverage on US politicians. Republican voters were more sympathetic with Israel in this regard. The poll also shows only 44 percent of respondents believed that Israel’s influence on US politics was at the right level. The poll was conducted by the Brookings Institution with participation of over 1700 people.
