In a state by state roll call vote on Tuesday, his son Donald Trump Jr. made the announcement that put his father over the required delegate threshold, at the National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio. Trump, 70, reacted via video link from New York. “A little over one year ago, I announced my candidacy for president and with your vote today, this stage of the presidential process has come to a close,” he said. “Together, we have achieved historic results with the largest vote total in the history of the Republican party. The prestigious 50,000 euro prize, equivalent to Spain’s version of a Nobel Prize, was awarded to SOS Children’s Villages International, an organisation dedicated to orphaned children. The Concord was the final of eight Asturias awards to be announced this year. Other categories include Sports, Social Sciences and Communication. Jury president Javier Fernández Fernández said: “The jury of the Princess of Asturias Award for Concord 2016 decided to award the prize to SOS Children’s Villages for their contribution for more than 70 years and in 134 countries, to the protection of children through pioneering principles that become even more effective in moments in which international conflicts put, at particular risk, the most vulnerable.” SOS Children’s Villages is a non-governmental and non-denominational organisation dedicated to abandoned and destitute children who require family based care. It provides some 50,000 children and 15,000 young adults with a permanent new family and works to prevent family breakdown and care for children who have lost, or risk losing, parental care. Typically 10 children are grouped together in a house with an SOS mother with up to 40 houses in a village with shared facilities. There are over 540 SOS Children’s villages in over 130 countries, in Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe. Past winners of the Concord Award include the Spanish Organization for the Blind, Unicef and British author J. K. Rowling. All eight Princess of Asturias Awards will be officially handed out at a gala in Oveido in mid-October. And not just any actress, but the great Catherine Deneuve who received this award which could be considered the Nobel prize of cinema,” explained Euronews culture reporter Fred Ponsard. Accepting the honour, Deneuve said she was moved and dedicated her award to French famers. She can add the award to a list of accolades, including a Silver Bear from Berlin and an honorary Palme D’Or from Cannes. Russian President Vladimir Putin has awarded a number of cultural workers with Orders and Medals, one of them being Serbian movie director Emir Kusturica. Kusturica has been given many awards for his activities, including the Order of Arts and Literature, Order of the Legion of Honor, Order of St. Sava, Order of St. King Milutin, Order of St. Stephen. In 2009, he received the Unity of Orthodox Nations International Foundation Award. Thanks to Kusturica, more than 400 movies from Poland, Ukraine, Russia, Slovakia and Belarus was aired in Serbia.
