The Beatles' first appearance on prime time television in North America was on the Jack Parr Show in January of 1964. It was a taped presentation of the lads playing "She Loves You." Parr allegedly derided the performance as "the downfall of British civilization." Of course, nothing was farther from the truth.nnIn February of 1964, The Beatles had begun gathering momentum as America's newest craze, and it was their first performance on The Ed Sullivan Show that solidified their popularity in North America.nnEd Sullivan, the poker-faced TV American variety-show host, spotted the Beatles in a scene of pandemonium at London's Heathrow Airport the previous October.nn"Who the hell are the Beatles?" he'd apparently asked his associates.nnHe would quickly discover that they were Britain's newest fascination, and he decided to bring them over to play his show.nnThe Ed Sullivan Show was taped in the CBS studios in New York City. The studio had a seating capacity of 703. The CBS offices received over 50,000 requests for tickets. But only a small portion of these were delegated to Beatles' fans. The Ed Sullivan Show was family fare, and although Sullivan never shied away from acts that were controversial, such as Elvis Presley, James Brown and other impending rock stars, Sullivan was always clearly more comfortable with the "establishment " of the entertainment world. In fact, his pet act was a mouse puppet called Topo Gigo, a silly parody of Italian cultural stereotypes.nnStill, Sullivan knew that The Beatles were something special, and he had them on his show in one form or another nine times.nnOn Sunday, February 9, millions of North Americans waited in front of small black and white television sets in anticipation of seeing this new phenomenon from Britain. The audience for that show alone is estimated to be over 70 million people.nnOn their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, the Beatles played five songs in two sets. The first set included All My Loving, Till There Was You, and She Loves You. Later in the second half of the show, the Beatles played I Saw Her Standing There, and I Want To Hold Your Hand.nnEach song was well rehearsed and went off without a hitch. The audience, at least that section that was reserved for young Beatles' fans was reserved beyond belief until prompted by stage managers to scream their hearts out. That was a part of the deal, it seems. Sullivan had made a pact or a "promise" as he called it, with the "youngsters" in his audience to refrain from over exuberance until the music ended. This was, after all, television, not some local night club. And while The Beatles may have been headliners that night, Sullivan was equally proud of the fact that he was presenting the Broadway cast of "Oliver" -- featuring Georgia Brown and Davy Jones who went on to become one of The Monkees -- Frank Gorshen (comedian, doing impressions of celebrities), Mitzi McCall & Charlie Brill (comedy team), Tessie O'Shea (singer, medley of show tunes), Fred Kapps (magician), and Wells & the Four Fays (acrobats, doing physical comedy).nnAt the beginning of the February 9 show, Sullivan read a congratulatory telegram from Elvis Presley, the king of the rock movement in the United States. Some describe this as a "torch-passiong" of sorts. The King was far from dead at that time, but his heirs were certainly present that evening in the CBS studio. This was not to say that there were no detractors. Having lived through the hulla hoop and the dance craze called "The Twist", most parents saw The Beatles as simply another momentary fad. Even Sullivan's musical director reportedly said "I give them a year." But it was more than the beginning of some brief love affair with four lads from Liverpool. It was the beginning of Beatlemania, a change in the cultural fabric that would last and continue through today.   Less

The summer was marked by sustained and deadly violence, including the notorious murders of three civil rights workers, countless beatings, the burning of thirty-five churches, and the bombing of seventy homes and community centers.nnIn the face of this violence, these organizers, volunteers, and Mississippians worked together to canvass for voter registration, create Freedom Schools, and establish an alternative challenge to the State Democratic Party — the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party. The veteran photographer takes the audience at Design Indaba Conference 2014 through 20 photos taken over almost 50 years. nnAt Design Indaba Conference 2014, David Goldblatt took the audience through 20 of his photos taken over almost 50 years, from commissions such as portraits of former Presidents PW Botha and Nelson Mandela to his personal work. In a moving presentation that elicited a standing ovation from the audience, he shared the stories behind the experiences, people and places that he captured.nnThe first image Goldblatt shares in his talk is that of the commando of National Party stalwarts, which escorted Prime Minister and National Party leader Hendrik Verwoerd and his wife Betsie to the party's 50th anniversary celebrations at De Wildt in the old Transvaal. The photo was taken in October 1964 and shows, among others, Leon Wessels, who went on to become a Deputy Minister of Justice in the National Party cabinet. nnAccording to Goldblatt, Wessels was the first senior Nationalist to apologise for Apartheid and today works as a human rights lawyer.nnThe obvious is not necessarily the obvious, he muses.nnDuring Apartheid, Goldblatt was interested in photographing people who were held in detention and tortured by the police. But as was typical of the era, information was censored and controlled by the police and so due to the secrecy his access was limited.nnHe shows the image of a young 15-year-old man, Lawrence Matjee, after his assault and detention by the security police. The photo was taken in 1985 at Khotso House, the headquarters of the South African Council of Churches (SACC) in De Villiers Street, Johannesburg. Khotso House was bombed three years later for harbouring anti-apartheid groups.nn“I felt, in him, a kind of compassion,” he recalls of the young man. “There was no hate.”nnA particular passion of Goldblatt is the physicality of people and in 1975 he embarked on a series that became, he says, obsessional for about six months.nn“The physicality of people impressed me deeply," he says. “Their limbs and the way they held themselves. I was obsessed with parts of people’s bodies. And I took these photographs thinking when I began them, that they would for once be something lyrical I could do. That it would be an expression of my own sensuality and sexuality and my interest in people but inevitably, without ever meaning to or looking for it, [the photos] also had political overtones."nnHe goes on to show several portraits of people he had photographed during this period, including a one-eyed house painter at home in Hillbrow, a photo of the soft fold of flesh on the thigh of a woman smoking and the intertwined hands of a man sleeping in Joubert Park wrapped protectively around his head.nnTo hear Goldblatt on the rest of the 20 images, watch the full conference talk on the Design Indaba app. Download it here.   Less

She is also regarded by some to be the most naturally beautiful woman of all time.nnAfter appearing in several British films and starring in the 1951 Broadway play Gigi, Hepburn played the lead role in Roman Holiday (1953), for which she was the first actress to win an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award for a single performance. The same year, she won a Tony Award for Best Lead Actress in a Play for Ondine.
