Sample of North Korean TV recorded off-air live during a trip there in August 2011. This was the station as received in our hotel. nnThis is the opening of the station for the afternoon broadcast followed by end of a news report and followed by some sort of mini drama.nnSome additional info on the content of the programmes as received from 'Ryuikhan':nJust for people who don't understand Korean, the news section is entirely talking about the artillery attack on Yeonpyeong-do, and accusing the South and the USA of provoking the attack first, saying that their army will not be intimidated. It ends with "our DPRK will march ceaselessly towards a unified Korean Peninsula"nnLOOOL the drama, the man hasn't seen the older one in years and invites him into his home. He talks to the older man about "soonae" who the older man assumes he is referring to his daughter. Saying that "soonae" is very smart, and can also sing very well. The old man asks him to bring "soonae" to sing for him (it is common in north Korea for children to sing for adults when they visit). The younger man says that "soonae" says it's too early in the day to sing for him. So, the old man decides to talk to "soonae" for himself. Then he walks into the room where the man's family is and calls for "soonae". Then when the man's wife turns around, the old man says "no, i was calling for 'soonae'". The younger man quickly comes in and says that "soonae" is actually his wife's name. All of them embarassed, the old man talks to the young man about appropriate names to call your wife. "Here in the great Korea, you cannot call your wife as if you call your child. To your wife, you can call her (lists appropriate names)". Then the old man calls out the man's wife, and instructs them to honour the Josawn (Korean) manners, and call each other by some name that I don't understand. I assume it's what husbands and wives are supposed to call each other.nSo it's not really a drama, but instructions on how you should call your spouse. LOL. nnmany thanks for that insight :) Less

A television station in Donetsk, Ukraine, comes under fire after witnesses say unidentified gunmen tried storming their building. Video taken during the attack shows the staff members running for cover. One eyewitness said the gunmen opened fire without any warning. (SOUNDBITE) (Russian) SERGIY CHORNIY, TV CENTER CAMERAMAN, SAYING: "I was standing by the window and saw about five cars driving up. They immediately got out and immediately, without any word, opened fire. Well, they opened fire, pulled the gates open, started to come in through the gate. By then, when they started shooting and I moved away from the window and didn't see the rest." Police guarding the station fired back before the gunmen fled. Pro-Russian protesters have taken over several government buildings in the region, including the Donetsk regional administration building. Many there are demanding a referendum vote on joining Russia. Less

The blast that ripped apart a bus in the southern Russian city of Volgograd on Monday morning was probably carried out by suicide bombers from the same organisation behind Sunday’s railway station explosion. The bombs that killed more than 30 people have put the city on edge. They highlight the terrorist threat Russia is facing as it prepares to host February’s Winter Olympics, 700 kilometers away in Sochi. Vladimir Markin, spokesman for Russia’s Investigative Committee, explained how the two incidents are connected.“According to initial information, the explosive device (on the trolley bus) was at least the equivalent of four kilograms (almost nine pounds) of TNT. Like the device at the train station, it was stuffed with shrapnel, and, because the shrapnel was identical in both devices, this confirms to the investigators that the two terrorist acts were connected. In all likelihood they could have been prepared in the same place,” said Markin.Russian television has released CCTV footage of Sunday’s suicide bomb explosion inside the train station. It was detonated when a police officer became suspicious and rushed forward. The footage shows one male suspect, one female suspect and the moment of the explosion. Less
