The Confederate flag was removed from a pole on the South Carolina capitol grounds early Saturday morning by activists, but state employees returned the flag to its position within several hours of the incident.An activist group claimed responsibility for taking the flag down. Witnesses said two people were arrested by authorities almost immediately after one of them scaled the flag pole on the north side of the State House grounds and pulled the Confederate banner down. A woman who took the Confederate flag down Saturday morning from the South Carolina State House grounds was quickly arrested by Bureau of Protective Services officers. The Confederate flag has been at the center of a debate in Columbia the past week in the wake of the massacre of nine African Americans in a Charleston church by a white supremacist.Activists calling themselves “concerned citizens” said in a news release that they removed the flag about 5:30 a.m. Saturday. A woman identified by the group as “Bree” climbed the pole and pulled the flag down, the group said.“Deciding to do what the SC Legislature has thus far neglected to do, the group took down the symbol of white supremacy that inspired the massacre, continued to fly at full mast in defiance of South Carolina’s grief, and flew in defiance of everyone working to actualize a more equitable Carolinian future,” the group said in a news release distributed to the media about 6:30 a.m.The state Bureau of Protective Services confirmed that it had arrested two people at the State House about 6:15 a.m. Those arrested were Brittany Ann Byuarim Newsome, a 30-year-old Raleigh resident, and James Ian Tyson, a 30-year-old Charlotte resident, the protective services bureau said. They were charged with defacing a monument, according to a protective services news release. The charge is a misdemeanor that carries penalties of up to three years in prison or a fine of up to $5,000 or both.Both of them were taken to Richland County’s Alvin S. Storms in parts of western Europe have left hundreds of thousands of households without power on Christmas Day. High winds and heavy rain have killed at least five people in the U-K in recent days. At least 50-thousand homes are suffering from power outage in the U-K. The stormy weather has also forced hundreds of people to flee their homes in southern and central parts of Britain. Some householders-- who are without power in Kent, Surrey, and Sussex, have also been warned that they may have to wait until the end of the week to get supplies restored. At least 130 of the 478 passengers on board an Italian ferry that caught fire early on Sunday have been rescued. Meanwhile, the Italian coastguard has said they’ve retrieved the body of a man believed to have been on the ship. The teams involved in the operation have been battling high winds and stormy seas, which has impeded efforts to rescue the remaining people on board the vessel. The “Norman Atlantic”, which was also carrying more than 200 vehicles, was near the holiday island of Corfu when the captain requested an evacuation. It was travelling to Ancona in Italy from the Greek port of Patras with a stop in the city of Igumenitsa. Greek rescuers have been joined by their Italian and Albanian counterparts. A fire-fighting vessel has been trying to approach the ferry and tug boats have reportedly been sent from Greece and Italy. The majority of those on board are reportedly Greek with the remainder made up of Italians, Turks, French and Germans.   Less

Desperate to get a last glimpse, the faithful in Asia’s largest Catholic country accompanied their spiritual hero all the way to the airport – each person with their own memories of a papal visit widely hailed as an enormous success. “I thank my dad because he gave this to me and Pope Francis blessed it,” said 17-year-old Erika Danielle Alejo, clutching a crucifix. “I’m also very grateful to my father who is working overseas for our family.” “I really think this man is a saint,” added businessman Gerard Roque, who brought his family and friends with him to see the pontiff. “And not only is he a saint, he brings a lot of hope in a time of sadness and  despair in the world. And that’s something valuable, something money can’t buy.” As well as comforting typhoon survivors in the Philippines, Francis urged the government to tackle corruption and poverty. On Sunday, he also drew a record-breaking crowd of at least six million to his final mass in Manila, despite stormy weather. Alarms on board the AirAsia flight QZ8501 that crashed into the Java Sea were “ringing out” as pilots desperately tried to control the plane – according to reports quoting an investigator. The information has not been officially confirmed. The investigator from Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee, who requested anonymity, told the AFP news agency that the noise of several alarms was recorded by the black box in the Airbus A320-200’s cockpit. He added that the pilots’ voices were drowned out by the sound of the alarms. The comments come a day after the Indonesian Transport Minister Ignasius Jonan said the jet had climbed too quickly, before stalling and plunging into the sea. Search and recovery teams have been preparing special balloons they hope to use to raise the fuselage and other debris from the sea bed. “We already have 70 balloons. We have arranged for the search areas to be divided up so that we and local authorities in Banda Aceh will carry out this operation together. I hope that with all these components we have gathered we can fully maximise our resources to raise the wreckage of the AirAsia plane,” said Suryadi Bambang Supriyadi, operations co-ordinator for Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency. The operation continues despite being hampered by bad weather in recent days. A preliminary report giving details of the inquiry’s findings will not be made public, according to Tatang Kurniadi, chairman of the National Transportation Safety Committee. It is due to be submitted early next week to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). Regulations state that an initial report must be filed within 30 days of the accident. The crash, which happened in stormy weather on December 28, killed all 162 people on board the plane which had been on its way from Surubaya in Indonesia to Singapore.   Less
