I'm Lorie Marrero, creator of the Clutter Diet book and on-line program, we are going to do a 2-part series on sentimental items. This is a hard subject for people. We're doing Part 1 of this series on the rules of keeping sentimental items. And Part 2 will be about ways to let it go.nnWe have four rules about keeping things that you feel sentimental about. First, you need to prioritize it. Like wine, sentimental items and memorabilia are best enjoyed within limits. We suggest, using what we call a limiting container. This could be any kind of container you like. You have that as the amount of space available to keep this kind of memorabilia. If you're talking about cards and letters, or you're talking about old clothing, you know that when that container is full that is your cue to clean out what's in there and prioritize the items before you add anything else to it.nnI just cleaned out my son's room. He just went to college a few weeks ago. Some of the things that I found in his room were his baby blankets. He had a very strong attachment to two blankets. Out of all the stuff that we found in the room these were the only two things that I really wanted to keep. I was able to just prioritize and say, all the other stuff isn't as important as these, which I find are really the essence of his childhood. What really makes up that memory for you in the strongest possible way with the most succinct amount of items.nnThe second rule about keeping sentimental items is to identify it. If you're keeping it, you want to make sure that if you get hit by a bus, somebody else knows what this is. This is particularly important with pictures. If you had your children all of sudden needing to go through all of your photos, do they know who these people are in the photos? Do they know what year it was? It's great if you can just simply organize your photos even into a shoebox with little dividers or something. You don't have to put everything perfectly away in albums -- if you're not ready to do that or don't have enough time to do that -- but make sure that somebody can know who those people are and why these things are being kept and what significance they have. nnThe third rule is to organize your stuff. Have some kind of system. If you're going to keep this stuff, the whole point of keeping it is that you can access it when you want it. And as my good friend Barbara Hemphill says: "If you don't know you have it, or you can't find it, it is of no use to you." Make sure you have a filing system or you have things labeled in bins or something so that you can actually find what you're looking for. nnAnd the fourth rule of keeping sentimental items is that you want to enjoy it. Give it a place of honor in your home. Why not get it mounted or framed? Put it in your everyday living area so you can enjoy it. You can find little items and put them all in a shadow box, you can take a big collection of, running race t-shirts and make them into a t-shirt quilt. You can Google that and find out there are a lot of people that will make a t-shirt quilt for you. You can make pillows out of other kinds of fabric items, old clothing, or even things like these blankets. Part 1 was about the rules for keeping these items, today we're talking about ways to make it a little easier to let it go.nnThe first way I have to share is to ask yourselves the question: "How can I make it smaller?" How can you take the memory that's associated with these objects or collections of objects and condense those memories down into a much smaller space? Digitizing is one really great way to do that. If you have a bunch of slide carrousels, or large boxfuls of pictures, you can get those scanned in and re-formatted and made into a tiny space like a small hard drive or a DVD, that's a great way to condense all those memories down. If you want to use a shadow box to take some very small objects and collect them together into a set of memories that fills up a very small space on a wall, that's another great way to make it smaller. We talked about a t-shirt quilt on our last video, this is a great way to take a whole collection of stuff and make it smaller. Take a picture of anything you like and digitize that. You can take pictures of furniture or any other large objects and retain the memory of the object without retaining the object itself. Always ask: "How can I make it smaller?" nnThe second way is to give some of these items to family members who have equal or greater significance attached to those memories. If you've been given the responsibility of making sure that a set of inherited items gets distributed to the rest of the family, one of the best things you can do is number all of those items, take digital photos of them, and associate those numbers with descriptions of the items, write all that out, send the photos and descriptions to everybody, then they can easily tell you which numbers they want. nnThe next way is to sell some of these items. Maybe you're not quite satisfied with certain things and just getting a tax deduction for donating them. You can sell things on Craigslist or eBay or consignment stores, if you have a large volume of stuff like an inheritance. You can Google estate sale people in your town and they know what they're doing. They can take a huge burden off of you by taking that project over and you get a percentage, they get a percentage, it makes it very simple to sell some of your stuff and get some of that value back. nnRemember that donating is a great way to help other people where everybody wins. When you donate to Goodwill, you're helping your own neighbors and your own community with job placement, job training, other job related services, financial and literacy training, all kinds of things that help the whole community to grow stronger, and you keep things out of the landfill, you get a tax deduction, the shoppers get a great value, and these items get re-circulated back into the world and become useful again. Donating is a fantastic way to let go. nnRemember that you don't want any of your sentimental items to become a burden for someone else. SUNNYVALE, Calif., May 8, 2013 -- Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] today announced that it has successfully demonstrated the Area Defense Anti-Munitions (ADAM) system in multiple tests against free-flying Qassam-like rocket targets. The prototype laser system has destroyed eight small-caliber rocket targets in flight at a range of approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) in tests conducted in March and April 2013.nLockheed Martin is developing the transportable, ground-based ADAM laser system to provide a defense against short-range threats, including improvised rockets such as Qassam rockets, unmanned aerial systems and small boats.nThe tests represent increasingly complex scenarios against representative airborne targets. In 2012, the system successfully destroyed 11 small-caliber rocket targets in simulated flight tethered to a cable at a range of approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles). The system also successfully engaged an unmanned aerial system target in flight at a range of approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) in 2012.nn"Our test results demonstrate the capabilities of the ADAM system to provide a practical, affordable directed-energy solution to the real-world problem of close-in threats," said Tory Bruno, president of Strategic and Missile Defense Systems, Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company.nn Designed for short-range defense of high-value assets including forward operating bases, the ADAM system's 10-kilowatt fiber laser is engineered to destroy targets up to 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) away. The system precisely tracks targets in cluttered optical environments and has a tracking range of more than 5 kilometers (3.1 miles). The system is being designed to be flexible enough to operate against rockets as a standalone system and to engage unmanned aerial systems with an external cue. Lockheed Martin based the design on commercial hardware components paired with its laser beam control architecture and software to provide the performance needed for these types of threats without the cost and time required for full custom development. The system is integrated in a container that is mounted on a trailer, making it readily transportable.nn"High-energy lasers complement kinetic energy systems and have unique attributes, including very low cost per engagement, a virtually unlimited 'magazine' and minimal collateral damage," said Doug Graham, Lockheed Martin's vice president of advanced programs for Strategic and Missile Defense Systems.nn Lockheed Martin has been a pioneer in the development and demonstration of high-energy laser capabilities for more than 30 years and has made key advances in areas such as precision pointing and control, line-of-sight stabilization and adaptive optics.nn Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company that employs about 118,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. In 1928, Felix the Cat was one of the first images ever broadcast by television when RCA chose a papier-mâché (later Bakelite) Felix doll for an experimental broadcast on W2XBS. The doll was chosen for its tonal contrast and its ability to withstand the intense lights needed in early television and was placed on a rotating phonograph turntable and televised for about two hours each day. The doll remained on the turntable for nearly a decade...nnIn 1935, the all-electronic CRT system was authorized as a "field test" project and NBC converted a radio studio in the RCA Building—now the GE Building — in New York City's Rockefeller Center for television use. In mid-1936, small-scale programming began to air to an audience of some 75 receivers in the homes of high-level RCA staff, and a dozen or so sets in a closed circuit viewing room in 52nd-floor offices of the RCA Building. The viewing room often hosted visiting organizations or corporate guests, who saw a live program produced in the studios many floors below.nnViewership of early NBC broadcasts was tightly restricted to those authorized by the company, whose installed set base eventually reached about 200. Technical standards for TV broadcasting were in flux as well. Shortly after NBC began a semi-regular television transmission schedule in 1938, DuMont Laboratories announced TV sets for sale to the public, a move RCA was not yet contemplating because of the ongoing shift in technical parameters. In response, NBC ceased all TV broadcasting for several months...nnOn June 24, 1941; W2XBS received a commercial license under the calls WNBT (NBC Television). It was one of the first two fully licensed commercial television stations in the United States, along with CBS' WCBW (now WCBS-TV). The NBC and CBS stations were licensed and instructed to sign on simultaneously on July 1 so that neither of the major broadcast companies could claim exclusively to be "first." However WCBW did not manage to sign on the air until 2:30 p.m., one full hour after WNBT.
