Some people might not think that a Women for Independence organisation was necessary but when Carolyn and some friends and colleagues were sitting night after night watching the independence debate unfold on the political programs whether it's Newsnight or Scotland Tonight or the news itself "we were absolutely sick fed up of the whole debate being presented through the eyes of men in grey suits (no disrespect to anyone who's got a grey suit on tonight!) but it brings a very serious point because if women are 52% of the population and if there's going to be a yes vote and we are actually going to achieve independence then we need to persuade the women. And we need to listen to the women first and foremost and we thought it was necessary to shift the focus away from debating some of the issues in Punch and Judy fashion about the currency or the monarchy or whatever to talk about real women, real people, in the streets actually we're concerned about. Women for independence doesn't have a manifesto, it doesn't have policies, we're first and foremost about listening to women and providing a space for women to discuss independence and make sure we'll damn well bloody be heard in the independence debate." Women for Independence is deliberately very inclusive "so if there's another speaker from Women for Independence they might not say exactly what I'm going to say but this is what I'm going to say" And she relates how after she and another person were late for a meeting in Motherwell because of their SatNavs, a wag in the audience said "if we have to rely on people like you and your SatNavs then how will we know what independence will look like?" "And I thought that was quite interesting because my support for independence isn't based on having an exact idea of what independence will look like and my view of independence which is a simple view that a nation and its people have the right to determine their own future and not to get the government's policies and values and the assets stripped that a government in London invariably does. I think it's a basic democratic right but we have to have a wee think about what some of the opinion polls are saying, and the latest one says that if people thought that next year we'd be £500 a year better off they'll vote yes for independence. Now that's not my view but it's clearly a view that's out there. And is that the view of people who are already well-off? I don't think so. I'd be interested in the social class, the gender makeup of the people that say they feel they'll be better off. Because when I think the people who are saying that probably are sick of politicians just fighting it out amongst each other, probably are sick of the big debates about the constitution, the monarchy, things like that: they don't feel it makes a difference in their day-to-day life. It was the things Cat was talking about, about the terrible attacks on our basic dignity and humanity being perpetuated by the government in Westminster. In my work and in my family life I've encountered so many barriers thinking how bad does it have to get? Because over the last few years collectively as a nation and individually we have lost a hell of a lot more than £500 a year: we have lost thousands. And the people looking to be better off are the people that are really struggling. You phone for a crisis grant from Glasgow City Council and can't get through because it is overwhelmed and they say that "if you've already applied for a crisis grant please allow 15 days for it to be processed. I'm sorry we can't put you through but you can look in our website and there's information about where to go for a food bank." But this is 2013! What does it take for people to go "No!" That is enough! This is evidence of the UK and Westminster failing. How much more evidence do people need that this isn't matching the inspirations of the majority or the people in Scotland? Nothing is guaranteed but if you were a bookie what would you bet on? That Westminster was going to change? Then think about the odds if the Scottish Parliament had all the power over taxation, utilities etc. We take daily risks when we change jobs or house or take out a loan. The Union caused crushing poverty and people rioted in 1707 rebelled in 1715 but they did not have the democratic right to undo it and many lost their lives. Today nobody is being asked to risk their lives. All we have to do is put an X in the box. We have a duty to future generations to stand and be counted and take control. We wouldn't want to look back on 2014 and think we didn't take that chance to do one simple thing. We must take that chance. What's going to win the referendum is if everyone in here persuades one other person we'll win a landslide. So let's go out and do it! Less

Operation Blue Jay is the story of the building of the huge air base at Thule, Greenland between 1951 and 1953.nnConstruction of a worldwide system of modern air bases was one of the Air Force's most important tasks following World War II. The US studied the possibility of establishing a major operating base in Greenland when it became clear that round trip flights of planes carrying atomic bombs between US or Canadian bases and European objectives were impractical. Thule became a key point in the whole American military strategy. Strategic Air Command (SAC) bombers flying over the Arctic presented less risk of early warning than using bases in England. Defensively, Thule could serve as a base for intercepting bomber attacks along the northeastern approaches to Canada and the US.n nA board of Air Force officers headed by Gordon P. Saville made a recommendation to pursue a base at Thule in November 1950. It was subsequently supported by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and approved by President Truman. To replace the agreement entered into during World War II between the US and Denmark, a new agreement with respect to Greenland was ratified on April 27, 1951 (effective on June 8, 1951). At the request of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), the agreement became a part of the NATO defense program. The pact specified that the two nations would arrange for the use of facilities in Greenland by NATO forces in defense of the NATO area known as the Greenland Defense Area.n nThule AB was constructed in secret under the code name Operation Blue Jay. Construction for Thule AB began in 1951 and was completed in 1953. The construction of Thule is said to have been comparable in scale to the enormous effort required to build the Panama Canal. The United States Navy transported the bulk of men, supplies, and equipment from the naval shipyards in Norfolk, Virginia. On June 6, 1951 an armada of 120 shipments sailed from Naval Station Norfolk. On board were 12,000 men and 300,000 tons of cargo. They arrived Thule on July 9, 1951. Construction took place around the clock. The workers lived on-board the ship until quarters were built. Phil, in "Tau Trouble," is on a team that was looking for a particularly tricky manifestation of the Higgs, and his year of Higgs hunting was rather different from what we heard about in the news.nn"CERN People" is a new series of short films that goes behind the headlines of some of the biggest physics breakthroughs of our time, introducing the public to a handful of engaging young scientists at the world’s largest research center – home to the Hadron Collider and birthplace of the worldwide web!nnWe have been filming during the most exciting years for particle physics in a generation. Our aim is to give the general public, who have a broad sense of what CERN is, a more personal sense of who particle physicists are and what they actually do. nnWe have had great access to three CERN experiments: ALPHA, CMS, and some of ATLAS. We were there when the Higgs results were coming together, and when a groundbreaking anti-matter paper was accepted for publication. We captured the emotion of these moments in real time -- and such moments in physics are rare. They get headlines and public attention for a few days; our aim is to make the public want to know more with a series of intimate, intelligent short films that open the door onto the real work of experimental particle physics. nnOur focus is primarily on younger physicists -- not the people who speak to the cameras when big news is announced, but the ones staying up all night analyzing data, preparing graphs, and tweaking the tools on which big experiment results depend. They will probably never have the first-class lifestyle of their friends who went into the private sector, where mathematical brains like theirs can make millions. And as a rule, they don't care. nnWhich isn't to say they don't sometimes get discouraged: pursuing exotic particles for over a decade with an ever-shrinking likelihood of finding them can be tough, particularly when your friends and colleagues are celebrating the great Higgs boson-like particle discovery. It was built for the U.S. Air Force by Convair Division of General Dynamics at the Kearny Mesa assembly plant north of San Diego, California. Atlas became operational as an ICBM in October 1959 and was used as a first stage for satellite launch vehicles for half a century. The Atlas missile's warhead was over 100 times more powerful than the bomb dropped over Nagasaki in 1945.nnAn initial development contract was given to Consolidated Vultee Aircraft (Convair) on 16 January 1951 for what was then called MX-1593, but at a relatively low priority. The 1953 testing of the first dry H-bomb in the Soviet Union led to the project being dramatically accelerated... on 14 May 1954 the Atlas program was formally given the highest national priority. A major development and test contract was awarded to Convair on 14 January 1955 for a 10-foot (3 m) diameter missile to weigh about 250,000 lb (113,400 kg). Atlas development was tightly controlled by the Air Force's Western Development Division, WDD, later part of the Air Force Ballistic Missile Division. Contracts for warhead, guidance and propulsion were handled separately by WDD. The first successful flight of a highly instrumented Atlas missile to full range occurred 28 November 1958. Atlas ICBMs were deployed operationally from 31 October 1959 to 12 April 1965.nnOn 18 December 1958, the launch of Atlas 10B sent the missile into orbit around the Earth (without use of an upper stage) carrying the "SCORE" (Signal Communications by Orbiting Relay Equipment) communications payload. Atlas 10B/SCORE, at 8,750 lb (3,970 kg) was the heaviest man-made object then in orbit, the first voice relay satellite, and the first man-made object in space easily visible to the naked eye due to the large, mirror-polished stainless steel tank. This was the first flight in what would be a long career for the Atlas as a satellite launcher. Many retired Atlas ICBMs would be used as launch vehicles... Even before its military use ended in 1965, Atlas had placed four Mercury astronauts in orbit and was becoming the foundation for a family of successful space launch vehicles, most notably Atlas Agena and Atlas Centaur.nnMergers led to the acquisition of the Atlas Centaur line by Lockheed Martin which in turn became part of the United Launch Alliance. Today Lockheed Martin and ULA support a new Atlas rocket family based on the larger "Atlas V" which still uses the unique and highly efficient Centaur upper stage...nnDesignnnThe Atlas A-D used radio guidance: the missile sent information from its inertial system to a ground station by radio, and received course correction information in return. The Atlas E and F had completely autonomous inertial guidance systems.nnAtlas was unusual in its use of balloon tanks for fuel, made of very thin stainless steel (with the uncoated steel necessitating the development by Convair of the anti-corrosive spray WD-40) with minimal or no rigid support structures. Pressure in the tanks provides the structural rigidity required for flight. An Atlas rocket would collapse under its own weight if not kept pressurized, and had to have 5 psi (34 kPa) nitrogen in the tank even when not fuelled. The only other known use of balloon tanks at the time of writing is the Centaur high-energy upper stage, although some rockets (such as the Falcon series) use partially pressure-supported tanks. The rocket had two small thrust chambers on the sides of the tank called vernier rockets. These provided fine adjustment of velocity and steering after the sustainer engine shut down.nnAtlas also had a unique and somewhat odd staging system. Most rockets stage by dropping both engines and fuel tanks simultaneously. However, when the Atlas missile was being developed, there were considerable doubts as to whether or not a rocket motor could be ignited in space. Therefore, the decision was made to ignite all of the Atlas' engines at launch; later the booster engine(s) would be discarded, while the sustainer continued to burn. HOLOSCENES is born from my concern that our troubled relationship to water will become the central issue of the 21st century.nnSited in public space, HOLOSCENES features a totemic aquarium-like sculpture inhabited by a rotating series of performers carrying out an everyday human behavior gathered from video submissions from around the world. Filled and drained by a custom-designed hydraulic system, the aquariums flood with up to twelve tons of water a minute, transforming the movements of the performers within.nnWe’re using the aquarium of HOLOSCENES to weave the unraveling story of water — the rising seas, melting glaciers, intensifying floods and droughts — into the patterns of the everyday. In this inspiring talk, the Youth Engagement and Outreach Associate for XCOR Aerospace, presents about the steps he took to get that position and the way in which he, and so many others, will soon be traveling into the final frontier. Beyond that though, he speaks about what it means for society, and youth specifically, as commercial space companies begin to fly into the vast and unexplored universe around us. nnnZach Oschin is a 16 year old from Westlake Village, CA who is currently in his junior year of high school at Viewpoint School. He works as the Youth Engagement and Outreach Associate for XCOR Aerospace, a commercial space company focused on the research and development of safer and more reliable, reusable launch vehicles that will take not only people, but also experiments into space. Zach shares his love and passion for space with his peers as he speaks to students around the country about space exploration and the endless opportunities available to them as the commercial space market begins to grow.
