Runner Helps Fallen Opponent Across Finish Line at Track Meet - A heartwarming story of true sportsmanship nnGlyndon, MN (WDAY) – Every once in a while in athletics, the scoreboard; who wins and who loses just doesn’t matter.nnSaturday, more than 20 teams and hundreds of competitors competed in the EDC Cross Country Championship.nnThe real winner? A show of compassion; a young woman from Devils Lake, who finished 8-and-a-half minutes behind the first place finisher.nnThis picture says it all. Her left leg buckled during the run… That fast… An injury to her patella tendon.nnLeNoue: “Just sobbing and so I started walking and I could not go any farther and she said, ‘here, hop on my back,’ half my size.”nnThe good Samaritan was Devils Lake High School runner Melanie Bailey…nnMelanie Bailey: Devils Lake Runner: “All I could think about was she was in a lot of pain. And I wanted to help her.”nn…A competitor, who says she was doing the right thing.nnLeNoue: Honestly, I loved the way I ended it. It was a great way to end my cross country season.”nnNow this is what winning is all about: Two runners finishing the race together, one carrying the other… Because that’s what you do.nnLeNoue: “So nice, she didn’t have to do that. How many people ran past me? And she stopped.”nnThe two girls have been Facebooking each other. Strangers now friends. Patrick Marcum has been the manager of the Logan High School basketball team (Logan, WV) since he was in middle school. His love of the Wildcats and the game of basketball is something truly amazing. Patrick Marcum, who is a very special kid that suffers from a congenital heart illness, got his chance on Senior night against Parkersburg High School. What happened next was truly amazing. This was recorded by his mother. This defines sportsmanship and what the game is truly about. Less

Just a week before his last game on senior night, Free State High's beloved star player Eric Watson suffered a devastating injury, tearing his achilles tendon. He was hoping to finish his career on a high note in a clash with Free State's biggest rival - LHS. The two coaches Chuck Law and Mike Lewis decided to do something very unconventional and allow the senior to start his last game even though he couldn't put any weight on his foot and was wearing a protective boot. It was a classy gesture and an unforgettable moment that reminded us what highs school athletics should be all about. Kudos to the two coaches, the players, the schools and everyone involved. Less

When Master Sgt. Joseph Martell returned home from deployment in Afghanistan a month early, he took it as an opportunity to surprise his teenage son. After landing, he and his wife headed straight to Brussels, Belgium, to his son Justin's high school football game. While showing up at the game unannounced probably would have been surprise enough, Martell took it a step further. He put on the opposing team's jersey and joined his son on the playing field when the referee called a meeting on the 50-yard line. It takes Justin all of three seconds to recognize his dad once the U.S. airman removes his helmet. "I thought he was — I don't even know how many miles [away], and the next thing I know he's standing in front of me and I'm giving him a hug," Justin told Spangdahelm Air Base. Now that's one of the best displays of good sportsmanship we've seen in a while. Less
