Design based around the garment's functional element and structure is the core principal of Chapter's Autumn/Winter collection, Moral Form. This collection is derived by the characteristic principles of Soviet Modernism through the simplification of form, repetitive angular geometries, and the aesthetic sensation and interpretation of contemporary materials.nnEmphatic in expressive simplicity, large in scale and imperial in its abstraction, Moral Form proposes bold interpretations of Brutalist Architecture such as cold appearance, harsh lines, linear elements and the consistent porous texture of concrete. The idea behind the functionality of structure as a design feature and the sense of vastness accustomed by repetitive structural elements embody this creative transformation of Chapter's progressive design for Autumn/Winter 2014.nnFilmed and edited by Paul Nguyen Less

This work extends on Cellular Forms, introducing additional complexity by using more than one cell type, which results in regions with divergent properties. The different cell types effectively compete with each other for space during development.nnAll resultant motion as well as shape is genuinely emergent since the simulation rules only dictate interactions between adjacent cells. The process is iterated over tens of thousands of time steps, with final structures having over a hundred million cells and remarkably complex morphologies.nnThere are six different simulations shown, with each one seen from four different camera angles to illustrate different aspects of the form as it develops. A density accumulation map is used for rendering, effectively giving an x-ray view through the structures.nnThis video is a slight variation on work that I originally presented at the 2015 European Conference on Artificial Life.nnI would like to thank Max Cooper for permission to use 'Teotihuacan Part 2' for the accompanying music.nnFor more information:nWebsite: http://www.andylomas.comnMailing list: http://eepurl.com/by__dH Less

This is an updated version of my earlier Cellular Forms animation (https://vimeo.com/82989945), including music by Max Cooper, and exhibited at the Ars Electronica Festival and the Bridges 2014 conference of maths and art.nnThe animations use digital simulation of a simplified biological model of morphogenesis, with three-dimensional structures generated out of interconnected particles to represent cells.nnEach form starts with a initial spherical cluster of cells which is incrementally developed over time by adding iterative layers of complexity to the structure. The aim is to create forms emergently: exploring generic similarities between many different shapes in nature rather than emulating any particular organism, revealing universal archetypal forms that can come from growth-like processes rather than top-down externally engineered design.nnCell division is controlled by accumulated nutrient levels. When the level in a cell exceeds a given threshold the cell divides, and various parameters control how both the parent and daughter cells re-connect to their immediate neighbours. New nutrient can be created by photons in cells hit by incident light rays. Nutrient can also be allowed to flow to adjacent cells. The simulation process is repeated over thousands of iterations and millions of particles, with each of the final structures comprising over fifty million cells.nnFor more information my work and Cellular Forms:nWebsite: http://www.andylomas.comnMailing list: http://eepurl.com/by__dHnPaper: http://andylomas.com/extra/andylomas_paper_cellular_forms_aisb50.pdfnnFor more music/videos from Max Cooper:nhttp://vimeo.com/user2186577nhttp://maxcooper.netnhttp://facebook.com/maxcoopermaxnhttp://twitter.com/maxcoopermax Less

This is a variation of my previous Hybrid Forms video (https://vimeo.com/134814340), using the same simulation data but showing regions of active cell growth instead of the internal structures. As cells are born they are highlighted in blue, which gradually fades as each cell ages. Complex patterns emerge in waves across the surface, with adjacent cells tending to accumulate enough food to split at approximately the same time so tending to be roughly synchronized in the times when new cells are born.nnThe difference between this and the setup I used for earlier Cellular Forms work (such as https://vimeo.com/93056665) is that there are two different cell types in the system, with all the cells being different blends between the extreme cell types. When a new cell is born it get a proportion of the cell type of its parent and a proportion of its neighbors. With only that change you get a lot more complex heterogeneous structures.nnI would like to thank Max Cooper for permission to use 'Teotihuacan Part 2' for the accompanying music.nnFor more information:nWebsite: http://www.andylomas.comnMailing list: http://eepurl.com/by__dH Less

See more architecture and design movies: dezeen.com/features/moviesnnFrancesca Rosella of interactive fashion brand CuteCircuit claims advances in digital "smart" fabrics will revolutionise the fashion industry, allowing us to download new styles for our clothes rather than buying new garments.nn"We are living in a digital future, so we do not need to sell 10,000 skirts," says Rosella. "We could sell 500 skirts, but then could sell thousands of patterns that you download to your skirt."nnBy embedding nanotechnology into fabrics, we can create "smart textiles" that are conductive, or even computational, Rosella explains.nnRead the full story: dezeen.com/?p=530580 Less
