Storm chaser Scott Sheppard gets hit by lightning while shooting video out the window near Fairburn, South Dakota. The strike hit his arm and then traveled down to the ground and blew a hole in the pavement. The lightning also disabled his vehicle and a passing car, both of which had to be towed. Scott has a sore arm but is otherwise OK. MEDIA: To license for broadcast, please contact Kory Hartman at SevereStudios.com 866-WX-LIVE-1 Less

Yesterday we had a very active thunderstorm pass directly over our small town with several strikes to ground within about a 1km radius. There were some spectacular sightings of these and hair raising close calls witnessed and reported by some very lucky people including a class of children at the local primary school who saw a fence very close light up like sparklers at a fireworks show I've experienced a lot of close strikes, loud and scary, but this one's the grand daddy of them all. It was the first stroke of lightning that was to signal the arrival of the mayhem that followed. I was inside, about 250m away when it struck without warning. The percussion was violent and deafening and shook everything around. As I rushed outside to see WTF, smoke and steam were rising and debris falling around what was left of a large tree. Later I found this chunk of wood 75m from the strike site. I've never seen destruction on this scale from a lightning strike. An adjacent trunk of the same size had to be removed as it was severely damaged as well. I took this clip after the debris had been cleared away and it exposed the severe damage done by the strike. I was hoping to find a Fulgurite, but no such luck. #financial_support_div{ display:none; position: absolute; width:300px; height:180px; margin-left: -150px; margin-top: -70px; /*- half of width and height */ top:50%; left:50%; padding: 5px; opacity:0.9; filter:alpha(opacity=90); z-index:1000; background-color:#000; color: white; } .close_box{ background: gray; color:#fff; padding:1px 3px; display:inline; position:absolute; right:1px; margin-right: -13px; margin-top: -13px; border-radius:3px; cursor:pointer; border: 1px #000 solid; } $(document).on("click",".close_box",function(){ $(this).parent().fadeTo(300,0,function(){ $(this).remove(); }); }); Loading the player ... Lightning illuminates the area they strike on Earth but their flash can be seen from space too. This timelapse was made from 49 images taken 400 km above Earth in 2012 by an astronaut on the International Space Station travelling at 28 800 km/h. At these distances a camera flash is pointless, but our planet moves by so quickly images can end up being blurred. ESA’s Nightpod camera aid compensates for the motion of the Station. The target stays firmly centred in frame so the final image is in focus. Astronauts can set up the device to take ultra-sharp images automatically using off-the-shelf cameras. The steady progression of frames seen in this video with the target staying in centre frame would be nearly impossible without Nightpod. (Video taken in 2012, released today by ESA) #financial_support_div{ display:none; position: absolute; width:300px; height:180px; margin-left: -150px; margin-top: -70px; /*- half of width and height */ top:50%; left:50%; padding: 5px; opacity:0.9; filter:alpha(opacity=90); z-index:1000; background-color:#000; color: white; } .close_box{ background: gray; color:#fff; padding:1px 3px; display:inline; position:absolute; right:1px; margin-right: -13px; margin-top: -13px; border-radius:3px; cursor:pointer; border: 1px #000 solid; } $(document).on("click",".close_box",function(){ $(this).parent().fadeTo(300,0,function(){ $(this).remove(); }); }); Loading the player ... Following up with comments at the original post: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=532_1432664158 you can see in this video, a nicely posed lightning bolt; skip to 1:30 if impatient. This clip was shot as the back side of the front was approaching, after about 6 hours of rain; clouds were not as high, rain was still heavy, temperature had begun to drop. The static image shows the 24 hour precipitation as measured by the Harris County Flood Warning System; image from their website. If you knew how flat Houston is you would appreciate what it means to get 6 inches of rain in 6 ours .Note the length scale at lower right. Less

Returning Home from our Live Theater in Hurst, we pulled over just after midnight to watch the storms advance across Fort Worth. Using the slow motion feature of the iPhone 6 plus, I captured this video from the dashboard. The "bolt" of lightning appeared to the naked eye as one solid flash. However, when we replayed the video captured on our phone, it was quite a display. Mother nature at her finest! Less
