'O Is For Orange' came about because of the set I made for ‘A Few Old Tunes’, the Boards of Canada-inspired night we did on June 20th in London. Because I’d edited so much video to go with it, I thought I’d finally get round to my first solo video mix too so here it is. nnThis is a second version because the first got taken down because of a copyright violation notice from someone. I've now re-edited the footage and taken out the offending item as well as upped the quality of the encode.nn‘O Is For Orange’ is the sound of weathered tape saturation, detuned analogue synthesisers, vinyl crackle and machine hum. It’s also the look of unfocused, flickering lenses, mirror image filters and blurry grain embedded into film. Unofficial fan films sit alongside experimental animation, public information shorts and even the odd official video. Material that BoC took inspiration from blends with their own work as well as many that they inspired.nnI make no apologies for the quality of the vision here, some of it is only available via the web at frustratingly small sizes. In a couple of instances I’ve actually downgraded the look and quality of the image to make it blend in better and in others, even my best attempts at filtering can’t disguise the low quality of the source material. This is a short documentary I directed as a supplement to the book and DVD for 'Celestial Navigations: The Short Films of Al Jarnow' produced for The Numero Group.nnTens of millions of people have seen these short films, but very few know the name of their creator. Still, via reruns and nostalgia-based YouTube forwards, filmmaker Al Jarnow has touched uncounted lives, shifting our perceptions of the world and movement without us ever knowing. nnBeginning with his work for Sesame Street, Al Jarnow boiled reality's minutia down for easy consumption between cookie-eating monsters and counting vampires. Coupling time-lapse, stop motion, and cel animation with simple, everyday objects, Jarnow deconstructed the world for an entire generation. nnDelving into New York's avant-garde film scene alongside Harry Smith, Jonas Mekas and Stan Brakhage, Jarnow created a body of awe-inspiring films that remain in the collections of MOMA and Pompideau Center.   Less

Vote for us for "Expedition of the Year" at www.canoekayak.com/canoe-kayak-awards/vote/expedition-of-the-year/nnDavid Midgley, a computer programmer from London, England, dreamed of doing something BIG, and different. A wild idea in a Scottish bar became a ten year project: learn to kayak, and then paddle the Amazon from Source to Sea. Darcy Gaechter and Don Beveridge met "Midge" in Ecuador during his travels and skill build up while he was preparing for the Amazon. He recruited us to help him run the whitewater portions of the source (the Mantaro river in Peru) and we decided to join him for the rest of the journey. Intrigued because we had paddled for years in Ecuador's Amazon basin, we wanted to see the world's biggest river. Darcy would become the first woman to paddle the entire Amazon. When we started the trip, more people had walked on the moon than had traversed the Amazon from start to finish. Now, with our journey completed, that number is tied. Twelve. nThis video starts high in the Peruvian Andes at the headwaters of the Rio Mantaro, the newly recognized longest source of the Amazon, and ends 148 days later on a beach at the Atlantic Ocean. We started with altitude sickness and went from snow and freezing temperatures through high desert to steaming jungle. We passed through Peru's notorious "Red Zone" famous for drug runners, Shinning Path insurgents, and wary indigenous people and paddled through pirate infested waters in Brazil. We had nothing but great interactions with all the people we met along the way.nShot mainly on GoPro, but also some Sony handicam and Canon T3i, this video is a short compilation of our 5 month journey.
