Take, for example, her creepy, but incredibly athletic spider crickets.nnJohns Hopkins engineering students and their professor have spent more than eight months unraveling the hopping skills, airborne antics and safe-landing patterns of these pesky insects that commonly lurk in the dark corners of damp basements.n nThe team, which hopes to pave the way for a new generation of small but skillful jumping robots, will present its findings Nov. 23 during a poster session in Boston at the 68th annual meeting of the American Physical Society’s Division of Fluid Dynamics.n nCaption: Undergraduate researcher Emily Palmer and one of her spider cricket subjects. Figuring out how critters move, they say, could lead to planetary rovers that crawl like caterpillars or winged drones that hover like hummingbirds.n nSo what design tips did the researchers manage to glean from these spindly six-legged bugs?n nFor one thing, the Johns Hopkins researchers were able to use high-speed video cameras to collect tantalizing clues about how these tiny wingless creatures can somehow leap a distance equal to about 60 times their body length. That’s a feat far beyond what any human track star could accomplish. An adult human who wanted to replicate the cricket’s leap would have to jump 300 feet or more—roughly the length of a football field. And, most times, spider crickets manage to land safely on their feet. How, the researchers wanted to know, can these tiny bugs accomplish this?nn“Because they don’t have wings, the main things they use during their ‘flight’ to stabilize their posture is their limbs,” said Emily Palmer, a sophomore mechanical engineering major in the university’s Whiting School of Engineering who is doing much of the testing. “We’re looking at the way the spider crickets move their bodies and move their limbs to stabilize their posture during a jump.”nnTranscript:n(music)Blue Danube Waltz nWatching these animals in slow motion is exactly like watching an elegant ballet happening in front of you.nThe way they control their flight in the air is very much like a ballerina would do.nThey really are masters of aerodynamics. nMy name is Rajat MIttal.nI'm a professor of mechanical engineering at Johns Hopkins University.nI want to understand the engineering aspects of these creatures and how they're able to do what they're able to do.nSo we're studying spider crickets. nThey don't actually have wings like most field crickets would.nSo we're looking at the way they move their body and move their legs to stabilize their posture during a jump up to 75 or 80 times their body length. nWe set the cameras up to take a ten second long video.nWe're able to capture them in slow motion very accurately.nFrom there we pull it into a motion tracking software.nAnd using this program we get to recreate the jump in three dimensions. nThis 3D model basically allows us to determine the different forces acting upon the cricket.nWhat we found that we didn't expect was that on the first part of the flight they actually streamline themselves to maximize the distance that they are going to travel. nBut once they reach the apex of their trajectory they immediately transition to kind of a stabilization posture. nNow the next thing is to land nicely.nUltimately the application would be in really tiny robots jumping robots over uneven terrain.n(rumble)nYou can imagine a situation where there's an earthquake and we want to send in an army of micro-robots to search for injured peoplenand you can imagine how complicated that environment would be.nA small micro-robot inspired by these insects could potentially navigate this kind of terrain in a much more effective manner.n(music)nIt's only when you slow these critters down that you really start to see the beauty and the intricacy of the way they move.nIt's kind of beautiful in a really weird way that you wouldn't really expect.nnVideo by:nJHU Office of Communicationsnvideo@jhu.edunPhotographer: Dave SchmelicknDirector of Video Strategy/Producer/Editor: Len Turner Less

The Daily Mail can reveal that the gunman responsible for the attack on the restaurant, which is not being named for security reasons, is believed to be 26 year old Belgian born Salah Abdeslam.nnThe terrorist seen in the footage bears a striking resemblance to Abdeslam, who fled Paris after the attacks and evaded capture after a shocking blunder by police near Franco-Belgian border. He remains at large.nnSources said it was possible a second, as yet unidentified gunman, might have involved in the restaurant attack. He may still be on the run, too.nnThe pictures come from a chilling collection of CCTV footage, obtained exclusively by the Daily Mail.nnMiraculously, none of the diners or staff inside the restaurant died during the attack, which lasted less than a minute, before the gunman is seen climbing into the terrorists’ black Seat getaway car.A man who had just arrived outside the restaurant to collect a pizza was shot in the back and died in the street.nnPolice are examining the video in their hunt for clues about the identities of the murder gang and to analyse the increasingly violent methods used by Islamic State to carry out mass attacks on innocent civilians.nnWhat is particularly horrifying is the calmness of one of the Islamic State gunmen seen in the film as he stalks the street looking for victims and quits trying to murder a woman cowering under a table outside after his assault rifle malfunctioned.nnTwo diners suffered minor bullet wounds but nearby another five people, including the man collecting his Pizza, perished in the gun attack. The chronological order of these songs is for some reason becoming increasingly hard at the moment. Once again, I began writing with eager fingers, ready to type the words 'Middle Era' in a welcoming fashion, perhaps with fancy formatting like this:nnWelcome to The Middle Era.nnInstead I've spent the last hour desperately trying to muddle my way through this blended 2008-2009 world, relying on my infamously unreliable memory, my dodgy, untrustworthy document ambitiously titled 'Discography', and certain musical clues in songs like: How shit is it? And, to what extent does the singer sound like an annoying 15 year old?nnMy heart and my head both tell me that In The Corner was probably written before most of the last 6 or so songs I posted. But the rest of my body is sitting comfortably, knowing I'll never have the dedication nor research skill to definitively prove this is the case. nnSo, In The Corner will sit here awkwardly, camouflaged in its 2nd verse strings and extra percussion, which were almost definitely added months later, thereby causing Mass Chronological Confusion. nAnyway, the song itself:nnIn The Corner was a big one. One of my most successful pop songs, I thought at the time. It is catchy, no doubt...nnWhen I listen to it, I think of the disgusting blue t-shirt I was wearing as my band played Battle of the Bands. It was our first gig, we brought loads of friends, we won, and I'm pretty sure we played In The Corner as our last song. It's an extremely happy memory - one of the times where being in a band really does feel like the most fun thing in the world. A memory which is only slightly tainted by how much I dislike the song now. nBut I do dislike it. There's something so annoyingly naive about it. The lyrics all about being friends, the sickly sweet melody, sung sickeningly badly by myself. The acoustic guitar, the bouncy bass line, with the top string clearly out of tune. The drum groove stolen from Easy by Lionel Richie (ok I actually quite like that bit). The Lighthouse Family style strings. The 'oh oh oh oh oh oh' bits in the chorus. I imagine my friends in the band thinking fuckin 'ell not this one again. Being embarrassed at me croaking it out each time. I assume really they were none the wiser. But the whole thing does seem a bit lame. We played this song for a long time in the band. GUYS. WAKE UP. BE A BIT MORE OFFENSIVE FOR CHRIST'S SAKE. nn nAs a side note, I don't think I've mentioned yet that my first collection of my own songs on iTunes was called 'Invasion'. Haha. Then it later graduated and became 'Quick, Invasion!' which is awfully emo. We're still in the 'Quick, Invasion!' phase here. But just think of that phrase and then In The Corner playing in the background. It's hilariously inappropriate. I spent so long unsure of what I wanted my music to actually sound like. Her musical path changed direction after she was denied a scholarship to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, despite a well-received audition. Simone was later told by someone working at Curtis that she was rejected because she was black. When she began playing in a small club in Philadelphia to fund her continuing musical education and become a classical pianist she was required to sing as well. She was approached for a recording by Bethlehem Records, and her rendering of "I Loves You Porgy" was a hit in the United States in 1958. Over the length of her career Simone recorded more than 40 albums, mostly between 1958 — when she made her debut with Little Girl Blue — and 1974. Historic forms of graffiti have helped gain understanding into the lifestyles and languages of past cultures. Errors in spelling and grammar in this graffiti offer insight into the degree of literacy in Roman times and provide clues on the pronunciation of spoken Latin. Examples are CIL IV, 7838: Vettium Firmum / aed[ilem] quactiliar[ii] [sic] rog[ant]. Here, "qu" is pronounced "co." The 83 pieces of graffiti found at CIL IV, 4706-85 are evidence of the ability to read and write at levels of society where literacy might not be expected. The graffiti appear on a peristyle which was being remodeled at the time of the eruption of Vesuvius by the architect Crescens. The graffiti was left by both the foreman and his workers. Modern graffiti: Graffiti is often seen as having become intertwined with hip hop culture and the myriad international styles derived from New York City Subway graffiti. The one with the longest history, dating back to the 1920s and continuing into the present day, is Texino. During World War II and for decades after, the phrase "Kilroy was here" with accompanying illustration was widespread throughout the world, due to its use by American troops and its filtering into American popular culture. Shortly after the death of Charlie Parker (nicknamed "Yardbird" or "Bird"), graffiti began appearing around New York with the words "Bird Lives". Photobombing Squirrel nSquirrels tend to shy away from humans, especially if you’re trying to get near one, but once every so often on a blue moon these furry little animals will get pretty close to you. Closer if you have any food on you. This photo was taken by Melissa Brandts and her husband when a squirrel decided to investigate their camera and the self-timer happened to go off. nnn5. Photobombing Quokka n If you asked people what a quokka was you’d probably get a lot of responses like “a whatta?” or “is that like a granola bar?” A quokka happens to be a type of marsupial that lives on the smaller islands that are just off the coast of Western Australia. Hayes McMullan should be a name on every Blues aficionados’ short-list and thanks to the preservation fieldwork carried out by one of the genre’s greatest researchers some 50 years ago – it might soon be.nnBorn in 1902, Hayes McMullan was discovered by the renowned American roots scholar, collector and documentarian Gayle Dean Wardlow. Wardlow, author of the seminal blues anthology Chasin’ That Devil Music – Searching for the Blues, may be most famous for uncovering Robert Johnson’s death certificate in 1968, finally revealing clues to the bluesman’s mysterious and much disputed demise. Moreover, in his tireless and committed mission to preserve the Blues for future generations, he captured McMullan’s raw talent on tape and on paper. Wardlow recorded these sessions, transcribed the songs and now, writes the sleeve-notes for this landmark release.nnWardlow and McMullan met by chance on one of the former’s record-hunting trips, in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, in 1967. Having introduced himself to McMullan on a hunch, it turned out this unassuming elderly man had not only heard of Wardlow’s idol, Charley Patton, but had played alongside him in the 1920s, as part of a brief musical journey that took him from the plantation to the open roads and juke joints of the Depression-era South. Striking up a friendship that was deemed unorthodox in 1960’s Mississippi, Wardlow traveled to McMullan’s sharecropper’s shack and convinced him to play guitar for the first time since he quit the Blues for the Church in the 30’s. “Hayes was playing like no one I had ever heard,” Wardlow writes with amazement.nnWardlow visited McMullan on a handful of occasions, always taking his recorder, a guitar and some whiskey with him. It was during these visits that Wardlow captured – with surprising clarity – the songs that make up Everyday Seem Like Murder Here.nnHayes McMullan passed away at the age of 84 in 1986, his talent and legacy largely unknown. “Reflecting now on our brief time together, I marvel at the small glimpse of something much larger I was lucky to have captured,” writes Wardlow. “The few old snapshots I took, the handful of tunes we recorded, and his brilliant performance of “Hurry Sundown” captured on film are all that’s left of the musical legacy of Hayes McMullan, sharecropper, deacon, and—unbeknownst to so many for so long—reluctant bluesman.”nnRELEASE NOTESnPRE-ORDER EDITION:nClassic gold wax limited to 200 copies.
