he Tiger Lillies perform a live 42 minute soundtrack for the Ballad, one continuous piece of music that evolves and underscores the beauty, pain, joy, tragedy and sorrow of relationships and the startling images by Nan Goldin.nThe Ballad of Sexual Dependency, constantly reedited and updated, began its public life on the club circuit in New York City and has since been shown at museums, galleries, film festivals, and alternative spaces both in the U.S. and abroad, including the Whitney Biennal, the Berlin Film Festival, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, The Hirschorn Museum in Washington D.C., the Cartier Foundation in Paris, the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Jeu de Paume in Paris, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the ICA Theatre in London, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.n"I met Nan a few years ago now. She used to come to our gigs in Brooklyn. She then got in touch and showed me her photo collection, the Ballad of Sexual Dependency. For me it was an inspiration. It reminded me of my own youth, drugs, night clubs, sex, fetishism. Sad photos as well of abuse and self-harm. So I wrote an epic poem on a subject so close to my own experience and youth. I wanted to assemble a video essay with a rapidfire list of nominees of great moments of editing-as-punctuation in film. The Adventures of Prince Achmednorgininal Film by Lotte Reiniger nMusik Live composed by Hannes Freitag & Lutz Baumann (2010)nnThe Adventures of Prince Achmed (German: Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed) is a 1926 German animated fairytale film by Lotte Reiniger and it is the oldest surviving animated feature film.The Adventures of Prince Achmed features a silhouette animation technique Reiniger had invented which involved manipulated cutouts made from cardboard and thin sheets of lead under a camera. The technique she used for the camera is similar to Wayang shadow puppets, though hers were animated frame by frame, not manipulated in live action. The original prints featured color tinting.nnThe story is based on elements taken from the collection 1001 Arabian Nights, specifically The Story of Prince Ahmed and the Fairy Paribanou featured in Andrew Lang's The Blue Fairy Book. With the assistance of Aladdin, the Witch of the Fiery Mountain, and a magic horse, the title character reclaims the magic lamp and conquers the African sorcerer. The culminating scene in the film is the battle between "die Hexe" (the witch) and "der afrikanische Zauberer" (the African sorcerer), in which those characters undergo fabulous transformations. Artist Sanya Kantarovsky in conversation with artist Allison Katz at Studio Voltaire on the occasion of his exhibition 'Apricot Juice' in collaboration with Ieva Misevičiūtė at Studio Voltaire, 2015.nn"Well what have you got?’ asked Berlioz.n‘Apricot juice, only it’s warm’ was the answer.n‘All right, let’s have some.’nThe apricot juice produced a rich yellow froth, making the air smell like a hairdresser’s.n– Mikhail Bulgakov, The Master and MargaritannSanya Kantarovsky (b.1982, Moscow, Russia) whose practice encompasses painting, drawing, sculpture and occasionaly film, has brought together his own work with that of Lithuanian-born artist Ieva Misevičiūtė. Misevičiūtė’s practice combines physical theatre, dance, stand-up, Butoh, perverted academic language and sculptural work.nApricot Juice takes place around two distinct parts – a language and movement based performance by Misevičiūte and a group of five large-scale paintings by Kantarovsky. The exhibition departs from Mikhail Bulgakov’s enigmatic masterpiece novel The Master and Margarita, a narrative woven around a visit by the Devil to the aggressively atheist Soviet Union. Written between 1928 and the author’s death in 1940, the novel has become one of the most potent and critical works of Russian literature of the 20th century.nnDuring two live performances Misevičiūtė will interact with her environment on a cat shaped stage placed in the nave of the former chapel, and built to conjure the form of Bulgakov’s demonic feline character Behemoth. Together with the paintings, scaled and lit in response to the original function of the chapel as a place of worship, the installation invokes the Christian metanarrative within The Master and Margarita.nnThe genesis of the collaboration between the two artists consisted of a series of gesture drawings and character studies of Misceviciute in Kantarovsky’s studio. The final paintings, indexical to Miscviciute’s body, mirrored chronological scenes from the novel. In turn, Miscevicute re-appropriated the paintings as a departure point for building a layered movement and language based performance, eventually closing the collaborative loop by engaging with the paintings hung in the gallery space. In effect, the process allowed both artists to consider the content of The Master and Margarita at length, coalescing and diverging their practices in the process.nThe resulting event, ad absurdum, considers a possibility of a space between literature, painting and theatre, in which secular skepticism can momentarily dissolve into belief.n nSanya Kantarovsky, The Flight: ‘Margarita floated out of the window, where she turned and hit the glass a gentle blow with her ham- mer. It's a treat to share 'Flower Garden Banks', an Animal Collective X Coral Morphologic collaboration featuring "Michael, Remember (Jam May 12, 2015)", the first warm-up jam for Animal Collective upon getting together to practice for the first time in a year and a half. It features Avey Tare, Panda Bear, and Geologist, and was recorded at Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville, NC.nnThe accompanying underwater video was recorded in July 2014 within the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary over two nights by Colin Foord (Coral Morphologic), with additional camera and lighting by Deakin and Geologist (Animal Collective). The raw jam and video were later shared, and the resulting video was edited by Jared McKay (Coral Morphologic), October 2015 in Miami, FLA. nnThe Flower Garden Banks are located about 100 miles offshore Galveston, Texas in the Gulf of Mexico and are the northernmost coral reef formations in the continental United States. The reef begins at about 60’ deep and is characterized by massive brain coral heads and a lack of branching or soft corals. The corals were filmed with special blue wavelength lights and filters that capture the natural fluorescence of the colonies. While the evolutionary purpose that this fluorescence serves corals is still not fully understood, the directed application of the corals’ fluorescent proteins by geneticists was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2008 by serving to accelerate (and literally illuminate) the field of genetics and biochemistry.nnBrian Weitz (Geologist) holds a masters degree in Environmental Policy, and briefly worked on ocean and climate change policy in Washington, DC. He and fellow Animal Collective member Josh Dibb (Deakin) have been SCUBA diving together for the last ten years, visiting such places as the Revillagegados, Mexico; Coiba, Panama; Poor Knights, NZ; and many others. nnCoral Morphologic is a scientific art endeavor comprised of marine biologist Colin Foord and musician Jared McKay. Meet legendary playwright Dario Fo, who here tells the intriguing story of how he became a storyteller and how he revolutionized theatre by “destroying the fourth wall” – encouraging his audience not to be voyeurs but to participate.nn“I’m a born storyteller, it’s true.” There was a glass-blowing factory in the town in which Fo grew up, where thousands of people from all over the world were employed. As a result a strange merge of languages arose: “Grammelot was created, a language of transit made up of onomatopoeic sounds, gestures, movements, tones.” It soon became apparent that there were storytellers in all the different groups of nationalities: “Everyone told stories and I also learned to tell stories. I repeated them, then I made up stories of my own, then I took stories I’d heard from the foreigners.” Soon Fo became famous for his stories, and was often invited to dinners in order to tell them.nn“She was truly my teacher.” When Fo met Italian actress Franca Rame, his wife of over six decades, she taught him the importance of communicating with the audience – “destroying the fourth wall” – in a way that would make them feel as if they were actually on stage. When Fo and Rame discovered that they were in fact “soothing the bourgeoisie” with their plays, they felt they had to change everything. This was done by e.g. setting up their plays in places where workers gathered, such as community centres. The audience soon started to participate actively: “… the audience wanted more than us performing stories which we thought were useful to them. No, they wanted us to talk about their personal problems.” In contrast to the bourgeois audience, which Fo considered to be “voyeurs”, their new audience was very much involved.nnFo and Rame performed in a time, where a cultural revolution had erupted in Italy. They developed a way of avoiding censorship by becoming an association with the audience: “We shifted all the models, the rules of conventional theatre.” Their new approach to theatre was much to the dismay of the politicians and during those years they were imprisoned, they underwent 40 trials, suffered great violence – including the rape of Rame – and had bombs placed under the theatre: “But we won with serious injuries and serious troubles…”nnDario Fo (b. 1926) is an Italian playwright, actor, comedian, director, stage and costume designer, songwriter, painter, writer and political campaigner. Much of Fo’s dramatic work depends on improvisation and draws on e.g. the ancient Italian style of commedia dell’arte. Fo’s plays, which have been performed all over the world, are known for their social criticism, and his solo piece ‘Mistero Buffo’ (1969) (Comical Mystery) is recognised as one of the most controversial and popular spectacles in post-war European theatre, and has furthermore been denounced by the Vatican. In 1997 Fo received the Nobel Prize in Literature, the Swedish Academy praising him with the words: “He if anyone merits the epithet of jester in the true meaning of that word.
