The former chief of Kazakhstan’s intelligence service and a former bodyguard have appeared in court in Vienna, accused of aiding the abduction and murder of two bankers in 2007. It is claimed Alnur Mussayev and Vadim Koshlyak followed the orders of Rakhat Aliyev, a previous Kazakh ambassador to Austria and former son-in-law of Kazakhstan’s president. Aliyev was found dead in a prison cell in Vienna earlier this year. The bodies of the bankers, who were working for Nurbank, in which Aliyev was a major shareholder, were discovered in barrels in Kazakhstan in 2011. The average pay of the top ten percent of earners is now almost ten times that of the poorest 10 percent across the OECD. Angel Gurria, the OECD’s Secretary General, told euronews: “Yes, there is a sense of urgency, yes there is a sense of the need to address the issues. And more and more there is a shared conviction that these are economically inconvenient and politically unsustainable issues, and therefore they have to be addressed.” Experts say the financial crisis has only added urgency to the need to address the issue by promoting better education and training possibilities. Soldiers’ descendants have come to commemorate the British allied forces in WWI landing in Gallipoli, Turkey, 100 years ago. The 25th April is known as “Çanakkale” in Turkish, or “Anzac Day”, as Australians and New Zealanders spearheaded the campaign, taking brutal losses. The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) was a First World War army corps of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force Naval attacks also failed. In eight months of fighting, many died on both sides: attackers and defenders. Official histories vary in their figures, though by some estimates the allied and Turkish losses were roughly equal, at more than a quarter of a million on either side, including from sickness. Out of the killing grew national consciousness; colonies became nations, the Ottoman Turkish Empire died, modern Turkey was born. Officer and later reformist statesman Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is famously quoted as telling his men, down to their bayonets: “I do not order you to fight, I order you to die.” Later generations want to remember. One visitor said: “The reason why I came here is because I wanted to see Gallipoli. I found out that my grandfather served here as an army chaplain, supporting the British troops. I was curious about the place. I’d read a lot about it.” Another explained: “It’s just fascinating to see the location and be reminded, movingly, of the incredible loss of life on both sides. That’s why we are here, to get a sense of history, a sense of what actually happened here.” The Turks well entrenched, the Allies exposed, winter also killed. Days of rain flooded and drowned men, and blizzards froze them. French soldiers also died by tens of thousands. Their cemetery is in Seddülbahir. According to war historian Şahin Aldoğan, “Mutual respect and a kind of closeness developed in the fierce fighting of the battlefield, but as the years went by there was no more hostility. Ataturk even said, ‘Your sons became our sons’. Today we see Australians and New Zealanders, British and all other nationalities who visit here as our friends and guests in this environment.” Suvla and Anzac were evacuated in stealth. The last British troops left Lancashire Landing at four of the morning on 8 January 1916, leaving so many others in the ground. British prestige was impaired by the failure to win passage through the Dardanelles. Our correspondent Bora Bayraktar summed up: “In the first years parents came to Gallipoli to remember their loved ones. As the ninth round of negotiations on the EU-US free trade deal wrapped up in New York, a battle was brewing over trade deals in Washington. Legislation to fast-track trade deals through Congress were given the greenlight by a key committee on Thursday. However, it received little support from Democrats. The deal effectively reduces Congress’ role to a yes-no vote on trade deals with no power to amend agreements. Democrats are worried, especially in the negotiations over the Pacific Trade Pact that it would mean Americans could lose their jobs as businesses in Asia. Over in Washington euronews correspondent Stefan Grobe explains how the battle over trade deals is set to be long and drawn out. “Domestically, the Obama administration has more support for a trade agreement from Republicans than from Democrats. That puts the likely Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in a complicated position and could make trade a major issue of the 2016 campaign.” Brushing aside partisan problems, the White House aimed to drum up public support for the EU-US Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership deal aka TTIP. “Looking ahead, TTIP will reinforce our common effort to counter violent extremism, support the sovereignty of Ukraine, build energy security. And also, it will help us address global problems such as nuclear proliferation and climate change,” declared US Secretary of State John Kerry during a press conference on Thursday. But Kerry’s wide-ranging claims are unlikely to have traction in Europe. Mass protests were carried out over the weekend to show disapproval of the deal. Thousands of ANZAC soldiers from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps were gunned down as they struggled to come ashore on a narrow beach. The Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott and the New Zealand Prime Minister John Key led tributes. Britain’s Prince Charles and his son Prince Harry were also present. About 11,500 Australian and New Zealand troops died in the battle and it was the first time they fought under their own flags. The fighting claimed more than 130,000 lives, 87,000 of them on the Ottoman side. Tony Abbott told the service: “Ordinary men did extraordinary things. Ceremonies have been held for the Ottoman Turkish 57th Regiment, which was virtually wiped out during the battle. A week-long nightly curfew from 10pm to 5am has been announced in the US city of Baltimore after rioting erupted in protest at the death of a black man in police custody. Thousands of troops and soldiers from outside the city have been deployed. Much of the violence happened in a poor area, parts of which had not been rebuilt since riots back in the 1960s. Volunteers turned out on Tuesday to help clear up the debris. Schools were closed, as was a shopping centre amid fears that rioters might target it. Buildings and scores of cars were burned in the violence. The trouble followed Freddie Gray’s funeral. After spending a week in a coma the 25-year-old died from a spinal injury suffered as police transported him in a van. Six officers have been suspended. His family have appealed for calm. “I’m as hurt but I do not want you all to be out here. I want you all to get justice for my son but don’t do it like this here. Don’t tear up the whole city, man. Just for him? It’s wrong,” said Gloria Darden, Freddie Gray’s mother. For a week protests had been peaceful. But Monday’s violence left 27 people injured, including 15 police officers – six seriously. More than 200 people were arrested. Maryland declared a state of emergency on Monday night as the violence spread from the west to the east of the city. The local police were criticised for being too lax. The riots are the most violent the US has seen against police treatment of African Americans since young black man Michael Brown was killed in Ferguson, Missouri last year. According to a rebel commander, he had committed a number of offences. “He beat up a civilian, stole his car, took money from his relatives – as he calls it ‘borrowed.’ He broke someone’s ribs, face and cracked their skull,” said rebel commander Alexander Nazarchenko. “His son came and complained to us. We took action.” Summary justice has become commonplace in rebel-controlled areas, targeting civilians and fighters alike. In Luhansk, the second-largest separatist-held city, efforts are said to be focusing on setting up police departments. “We don’t have courts so far. We are trying to resolve this problem. We are working with prosecutors to decide which action to take. Verdicts will be made when there are courts,” said Andrei Pasichnik, deputy police chief. As there are no judges, sentences are passed down by prosecutors. A woman from the Philippines has reportedly been spared at the last minute after an alleged accomplice surrendered to police. The two Australians, three Nigerians, a Ghanaian, a Brazilian and an Indonesian were executed by firing squad, in spite of international appeals for clemency. Earlier the mother of one of the two Australians, Myuran Sukumaran, said her son was due to be shot at midnight local time. Australia had appealed for the executions to be delayed to allow investigations into alleged irregularities to be completed. The executions took place at the Nusakambangan prison island in central Java.
