British architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP) have won a competition to design the newnTerminal 3 building at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. The scheme will deliver a new terminalnbuilding, boarding gates, concourses and a multi-function building, along with transport infrastructure.nnThe practice, working alongside Taiwan engineering firm CECI, saw off competition from Foster +nPartners and UN Studio to win the project. The jury said that it had been impressed with then‘innovative planning and design’ submitted by RSHP.nnThe design for Taoyuan Terminal 3 synthesises the practice’s previous major airport experience withnthe specific brief. It has brought together the flexibility of the single span, loose fit volume of HeathrownTerminal 5 with the warmth and human qualities of the flowing interior spaces of Barajas Terminal 4.nThe result is a unique, dynamic and fluid architecture that allows for easy adaption and futurentransformation of airport functions without compromising the passenger experience or thenarchitectural integrity.nnThe RSHP proposal is inherently simple in its concept. The design is inspired by Taiwan’s beautifulnlandscapes, the seas surrounding it, its rhythms of nature and life to create a series of unique interiornplaces designed for their purpose and protected beneath an elegant hard shell roof. Within, a softninner surface is malleable and dynamic to celebrate and form the ever changing spaces below. Thennature of the interior spaces whether grand, intimate, uniform or dramatic and the extent of thosenspaces too can be changed. Adjustable scaling will give passengers spatial clarity in all areas; large,nsmall, busy or quiet, to reduce stress and improve wellbeing and comfort. This flexibility ensures thenairport is always at its best and suitably presented as the principal gateway to and from Taiwan to thenrest of the world.nnThe terminal 3 building will be the first of a new generation, a highlight in the journey for new andnseasoned travellers alike. “Memory is what makes us who we are,” says Kenyan Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o – a frequent contender for the Nobel Prize in Literature – in this video about how colonizers sought to erase the memories of the natives by severing their linguistic connections.nnThe colonizers played the game of “power-politics” by tampering with the memories of the natives and instead planting new ones – those of the colonizer: “You literally erase the memory of who they are.” As an example of this, places were renamed in terms of the invasive presence, e.g. New York and New England. nn“Everybody’s language is the keeper of their memory.” Wa Thiong’o argues that language is empowerment, which is furthermore emphasised by the fact that one of the first things that the colonizers did was to cut off the African slaves’ linguistic connection to Africa. The tradition of African people writing in their own language has always been present, and he finds it absurd that even today many native Africans think that African literature is literature written in English or French. Moving the original African languages to the periphery, he finds, is a result of “a globalization of inequality of power between languages.” This discrepancy of power-relationships is constant, but there is a tendency to not wanting to acknowledge this. To move on, however, it is essential to remember and own up to reality: “Words – no matter what they mean – can never erase the actual material reality.” nnNgũgĩ wa Thiong’o (b. 1938) is a Kenyan writer. He grew up during the colonial period in Kenya, and his dream of a free Africa has shaped his oeuvre, which is written both in English and in Kikuyu. In 1977 he began a new form of theatre ‘Ngaahika Ndeenda’, which sought to liberate the theatrical process from what he considered “the general bourgeois education system.” Despite its success, the authoritarian Kenyan regime shut it down and he was subsequently imprisoned for more than a year. Adopted as an Amnesty International prisoner of conscience, however, he was released and left for the U.S., where he still resides. Among his work, which includes novels, plays short stories and essays, are ‘Weep Not, Child’ (1964), ‘Petals of Blood’ (1977), ‘Wizard of the Crow’ (2006), ‘Dreams in a Time of War’ (2010) and ‘In the House of the Interpreter: A Memoir’ (2015). Wa Thiong’o has also taught at Yale University, New York University and the University of California, Irvine. They settled a goal: cycling from Barcelona to Valencia in just one day: 370Km in a fixed gear bike, which meant forcing the body to the limit, a non stop pedaling, pedaling or burst! nOn May the 25th , these guys took off from Barcelona at 4a.m with their fixed gear bikes heading to Valencia in one day.nnThey were followed by a van with two assistants, and they completed their trip arriving to Valencia the following day at 00:35am. Guys from “De Que Bikes” shop and other people were waiting for them.
