Shadow animation is one of the earliest forms of animation dating back to around 1920. In fact, the first feature animated film was created in the medium by Lotte Reineger called The Adventures of Prince Achmed. I’ve been a fan of Reineger’s work for some time and have worked in the art form before. This video, however, pushed my skills in exciting new ways. I feel it is my strongest effort thus far in a style of animation I have grown incredibly fond of. nnThe creative process begins with a selection of paper. I chose a wide assortment of tissue papers and translucent art paper to work with. Black card stock was purchased in bulk and I spent several weeks with an xacto knife and pair of scissors, cutting all the props, characters, and backgrounds out. nnWhen all my assets were complete, I set up my animation rig, which consists of a giant light box with a tripod/camera rig positioned above it connected to my computer. The paper is then laid out on the light box, with the background separated by a custom cut plane of glass. All movable objects are then placed on top of the glass and animated frame by frame. I employed a new practice in this production in a few scenes involving shooting some characters on green screen (in this case green light) and compositing them into the final scene during the editing process. An example of this is the shot of the woman swimming up the underground channel. I shot the channel with the fish parting as a background layer and shot an additional clip of the woman swimming. Later I put the two shots together and matched them up in a way that makes the fish seem to swim around her. I love looking for opportunites in which modern filmmaking technology can combine with traditional techniques in fun and exciting ways. nAnother example of my use of new technology was in the editing process. I use Final Cut Pro X and found the color correction tool especially useful during production of Lioness. My intention for this video was to give a sense that the woman is globe trotting to a wide assortment of interesting locales. The stark contrast of colors from one scene to the next, I felt, helped differentiate each new area. Finding the appropriate color selections from a limited amount of paper at the craft stores proved difficult. dear friends…nervously excited to share with you the video for Agnes. it’s hard to explain exactly how it feels inside a human centrifuge. you sit in a small egg-like pod about the size of a horse which hangs off a 50 foot steel horizontal frame. It looks like something out of a bond villain’s lair. it’s claustrophobic and uncomfortable and also incredibly hot. nnslowly the whole thing starts to rotate like a helicopter blade. Faster and faster until every part of you becomes crushed under the extreme gravity. its like being slowly sat on by an elephant, or like your whole body being punched in slow motion. you have to flex every muscle and use every ounce of strength you have to keep going. breathing requires serious effort. movement becomes incredibly strained and almost painful. everything that once weighed 5 kilograms now weighs 50. its difficult even to keep your eyes open. it hurts in places you really didn’t know existed. veins and capillaries burst under the pressure and bruising begins. its a rapid physical overdrive.nnthe blood rushes from your brain making it impossible to think rationally or focus. your eyes are also drained and you get tunnel vision…only able to see small circles of the world directly infront of you and your sight goes completely greyscale…no more colour. your balance and spatial awareness goes and the world begins to spin like you’ve had way too much to drink. but the most striking thing is the way that the machine pulls on your heart. you can actually feel it struggling to beat and changing shape…flattening inside of your chest. Its similar to that horrible sinking, tugging heartache that comes only with complete and overwhelming sadness. and then you pass out. nnwe ran the centrifuge 18 times while i tried to sing along to a song which i find difficult to listen to at the best of times. nnthis was probably the most intense video-making experience I’ll ever have. Learn the secrets behind the Star Wars saga's many innovative visual effects, from the Death Star's detailed interiors to the towering AT-AT walkers.n nThis vintage featurette opens by detailing the chess game played between Chewbacca and C-3PO in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The creatures in the game were animated via stop-motion then superimposed onto the chess board, with a visual trick giving them a holographic appearance. The scene took place on the Millennium Falcon, itself a model, photographed by a computer-controlled camera. It was shot stationary on a blue screen, which allowed for different backgrounds and other moving objects to be added later. The same technique was used to create the film's dogfights and Death Star trench run.n nMatte paintings were also a heavily used form of visual effects in A New Hope. During Obi-Wan Kenobi's deactivation of the Death Star's tractor beam, Alec Guinness was shot on-set. A matte painting served as the background, with a spot left open for the footage of Guinness to be inserted.n nMark Hamill narrates behind-the-scenes footage from Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, in which Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett work on the tauntaun sequence. The miniature tauntaun is animated one frame at a time by hand via stop-motion. It takes the two one hour to create one second of finished stop-motion film. The same technique is used to animate the AT-AT walkers, shot on a set of baking soda and microscopic glass bubbles. It took nine months to design and build the AT-AT models, many of which were different sizes to create an illusion of depth. The snowspeeders from the Hoth sequence were also miniatures and shot on blue screen, either stationary and filmed with a computer-controlled camera, or controlled on a line for explosions and crashes.n nIn creating the asteroid field sequence from The Empire Strikes Back, more blue screen work was used, combining various ships like the Millennium Falcon as well as individual asteroids into one shot. Three solitary vandals (WOLFTITS, AVOID, and SMELLS) meet each other while seeking out the meaning behind the enigmatic artwork left behind by UFO (another nomadic artist). Roaming from one decaying zone to the next, in a never ending search for beer, weed, and a wall to paint- these artists form a pact with the other remaining desperate survivors (played by RAMBO, NOXER, EKG, and others). Shirley finds an obsession living in experimentation. Then using the landscape in which these individuals are used to employing as a backdrop to their artwork, they traveled from the mountains of Upstate New York to Black Mountain, North Carolina filming in many squalid buildings and freight train yards along the way- illegally. Using the cliche "what's the point?" as a central theme, Shirley and his cast explored various philosophical answers while maintaining a satirical tongue in the process. The mystical theme of the seeker was incorporated into the ideology of production- letting the film write itself from narrative exploration and unscripted improvisation. It was not until the film had been edited that the script finally finished itself. nnThe film will exist as a center piece to a group show of artifacts from the film (costumes and UFO's sculptures) and new artwork inspired by the film's themes. Each space will be installed site specific with an interactive / kinetic carousel in which riders can view the film from, DARKCLOUDS themed mobile of iron metal clouds, life sized contour wrought iron sculptures of the Wastedland characters by WOLFTITS, glass framed scrolls with words of Wastedland prayers written by urban billboard poet RAMBO, found object homeless structures by ADAM VOID, and paintings by NOXER and EKG. The musicians who scored the film will be on site for opening night to play- acts such as UNSTOPPABLE DEATH MACHINES, HOWARDIAN, FAKE HOOKER, MR.
