What if instead of redrawing catchment areas, poor parents were given the same choices middle-class families take for granted?nnP.S. 8 in Brooklyn Heights is one of New York City's most sought after public elementary schools. It’s surrounded by luxury condominiums and nineteenth-century town houses. Young families pay top dollar to move into the zone with the goal of laying claim to one of P.S. 8’s coveted kindergarten spots.nnThree quarters of a mile from P.S. 8 is another public elementary school called P.S. 307. It serves a tiny section of Brooklyn that on a map looks like it was carved out of the area assigned to P.S. 8. And the zone is fully occupied by the Farragut Houses, which is a large public housing project.nnAs a result, demographically these two schools just a short distance apart look nothing alike: Ninety-percent of the students at PS 307 come from economically disadvantaged homes, as compared to 16 percent at P.S.8, and 95 percent of P.S. 307 students are minorities, while at P.S. 8 the figure is 40 percent.nnAnd there’s nothing unusual about this particular district; race and class divisions exist in public school systems all over America. Sixty-two years after the Supreme Court ruled against separate but equal, school lines are drawn in a way that keeps kids who are rich and poor—black and white—apart.nnNow, in this particular district in Brooklyn, with P.S. 8 experiencing severe overcrowding, the community is making a serious attempt to bring more integration. In early January, a local board that represents the district voted 6 to 3 to redraw the boundary between P.S. 8 and P.S. 307. In theory, this will mean hundreds of white affluent families will start sending their kids to a school that’s currently predominantly poor and minority.nnBut will parents go along with the plan?nn"In general, the lesson of integration over the past 30 or 40 years has been don't just compulsorily reassign families and expect integration to occur," says Richard Kahlenberg, a senior fellow at the left-leaning Century Foundation who is considered "the intellectual father" of the movement to integrate schools. "Upper middle class families have options," he says. "They can move to a different district. They can send their kids to private school."nnWendy Lecker—a senior attorney at the Education Law Center, who's part of an informal working group to bring more diversity to New York City schools—is more sanguine.nn"Many parents don't themselves have experience with integrated education," she says, "and I have a little more faith in parents that...when they understand the benefits of being in a diverse school district they will choose to participate in the public school system."nnMeanwhile, walking distance from P.S. 8 and P.S. 307 there are three charters with diversity as part of their core mission. They're taking a different approach to integration—within the very same district. nnCharters are public schools that are free from many of the bureaucratic rules that govern traditional public schools, and they aren't strictly tied to a particular neighborhood, so kids from anywhere in the city can apply for a slot. The newest of the bunch is the International Charter School of New York.nn"We have everyone from parents who work on Wall Street to families who live in transitional housing," says Matthew Levey, the school's executive director and founder. "Diversity is something that everyone should value," says Levey, "but if you force [parents] to value it then they don't."nnToday most charter schools in the U.S. aren’t diverse at all, but Kahlenberg believes that if parents had more choices many would recognize the immense benefits and opt to send their kids to integrated schools. Alexis Sanchez fired a brace as Chile condemned England to their first Wembley defeat under Roy Hodgson.nnBarcelona star Sanchez produced a man of the match display to put the hosts to the sword a year and a day since a 4-2 reverse to Sweden.nnOn a crisp winter's evening, Hodgson named three debutants in his starting eleven, with Southampton pair Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez joining Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster in making their international bows.nnIt was also a night that saw Frank Lampard, wearing the captain's armband, receive a golden cap to commemorate becoming only the eighth player to reach 100 appearances for England.nnHodgson made eight changes to the side that beat Poland last month to secure qualification for next summer's World Cup in Brazil.nnIn his programme notes, the England manager described Jorge Sampaoli's Chile team as "formidable opponents" -- and as soon as the whistle sounded it became evident his observation was accurate.nnAfter a bright opening in which Phil Jones tested Claudio Bravo in the Chile goal, the hosts enjoyed much of the ball and looked threatening going forward.nnWayne Rooney found James Milner with an intelligent pass and set the Manchester City man free down the right.nnThe midfielder fired a low cross into the danger area and in his attempt to clear Marcos Gonzalez almost diverted the ball into his own net and but for an instinctive save by Bravo, England would have found themselves ahead.nnBut the Three Lions' early dominance stalled as Chile broke into their half with their first signs of intent on seven minutes.nnMauricio Isla played an exquisite pass in behind the England backline that found Sanchez free in the box and he set up Charles Aranguiz, who had a clear sight at goal.nnOnly a brave block by Jones prevented Forster being called into action for the first time, or so he thought as seconds later he was picking the ball out of his net.nnEngland failed to clear their lines and Eugenio Mena found himself in space on the left. He picked out Sanchez who lost his marker and met the inch-perfect cross with a powerful low header past Forster.nnA frantic spell followed as England looked to hit back immediately.nnMilner had a fierce shot well-parried by Bravo before Forster got a strong hand to a strong Jean Beausejour effort moments later.nnLampard then saw a 30-yard effort from a free-kick expertly tipped over the bar by an outstretched Bravo. This was proving to be anything but an exhibition match as both teams went for the jugular.nnJust after the half hour mark, the Chileans produced a stunning display of counter-attacking football from their own corner flag which led to Beausejour bearing down on Forster's goal.nnForster did well to make himself big and delay the Wigan Athletic man's shot, before the chance fizzled out but it was a warning to England.nnAs the half drew to a close, Hodgson's men struggled to find their rhythm and maintain possession for any sustained period. However, seconds before the break Jack Wilshere found himself in space in the centre of the field.nnHe picked out Rooney with a perfectly weighted pass and the Manchester United star beat his man and found Lallana in space in the box.nnUnfortunately for England, the Southampton forward could not quite get the ball out from under his feet and his shot was blocked by the Chile defence before going wide of the goal.nnEngland began the second half brightly, with Rooney breaking free on the left to force a corner. They kept knocking on the door but the Three Lions could not break through a resolute Chile defence.nnHodgson decided it was time to inject some fresh legs into the game. Jones was replaced by club team-mate Chris Smalling and Rodriguez came off for Andros Townsend, who had an almost immediate impact.nnThe Tottenham man picked up the ball wide on the right and turned Mena before playing the ball into Wilshere, who was subsequently bright down on the edge of the box. Leighton Baines' seemingly goal-bound free-kick clipped the wall and went out for a corner.nnBy this time Jermain Defoe, Tom Cleverley, Jordan Henderson and Ross Barkley had been introduced as England stepped up the tempo.nnBut the visitors sought to slow the pace of the game down, get men behind the ball and prepare to hit back on the counter-attack.nnAnd their game plan succeeded as they claimed a second after Marcelo Diaz picked up a loose ball and found Sanchez, who darted through on goal before dinking the ball over Forster to score his second of the match and wrap the game up.nnHodgson will of course be unhappy to have seen his unbeaten home record disappear into the cold November air, but will take solace in the fact he's been able to blood three newcomers to the international scene as he continues his audition process for the World Cup in Brazil next summer.nnNow full focus turns to the visit of Germany in four days' time. Going after every win, getting every detail meticulous and right, being the best of the best, not following through or finishing things up out of fear that it won’t be perfect in the end? Yeah, I know it well. Perfectionism plagued me for most of my life. Perfection kept me a prisoner from the joy of life, the beauty of creating, to the freedom of expressing, the absolute magic of dropping my walls and dropping IN.nnWe strive for perfection. BUT…the BEAUTY of this life, the JUICE that makes this life worth waking up to IS the journey of transformation, the journey of figuring it out, of messing it all up and then making it all right…it is the journey of perfection…not the destination of perfection that we need to strive for. If it was all perfect, there would be nothing else to work towards, nothing left to learn, to uncover, to embrace, to dance in, to FEEL. nnEverything is PERFECTLY IMPERFECT, because it is right where we need to be. Breakdowns and breakthroughs are two sides of the same coin- they go hand in hand. You can’t have one without the other. And I promise you, that on the other side of the most painful, horrific breakdown, is the most incredible, uplifting, LIFE-CHANGING breakthrough that you will ever experience. nnIMPERFECTIONS are PERFECTION in transition…it is that necessary step that we must take to get you to the next step on our journey. nnSo if it’s not about being perfect, what is it about? I think it’s about having AWARENESS and then making the necessary adjustments to get back on course. nnShips and airplanes do this all the time. They don’t go in a straight line from Point A to Point B. They are constantly making adjustments because of the elements against them. Pilot’s know this, and they don’t make themselves wrong for it, they expect it. Because they know it’s a NECESSARY part of each and every journey they take. They expect it, then they adjust. Awareness, adjustment. Awareness, adjustment. nnIt’s not about making ourselves wrong, it’s about taking responsibility for what IS and then taking ACTION for WHAT IS TO BE. nnHow much we know ourselves is important…but how much we LOVE ourselves DESPITE what we know is EVERYTHING. How much we about our breakdowns, our darkness, our anger, our love issues, our insecurities…how much we know about all of our imperfections is so incredibly important, but how much we LOVE ourselves DESPITE all of those imperfections is EVERYTHING. nnLove your perfect imperfections….embrace your darkness, embrace the breakdowns, it’s perfect for where you are RIGHT now.
