Police in Kenya have dispersed opposition protests over the electoral process with water cannon and tear gas. At least one person died. The opposition CORD alliance believes the country’s electoral commission is biased in favour of the ruling coalition and wants its members to quit. The next elections are not until August 2017 but tensions are already running high and Kenya is prone to political strife. There was violence after the 2007 election and the opposition disputed the outcome of the vote three years ago. “We as Kenyans have no faith in the IEBC (Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission). The 2013 elections weren’t clear. Even the head of the commission himself cannot give out a proper account of the votes. Even now he cannot offer Kenyans a proper count of the votes. Why are they killing Kenyans? Why are they bringing the police to kill Kenyans?” said Betty Otieno, a resident of Kibera and one of the protesters. The government says protests are allowed, but Monday’s were illegal because police were not given enough warning. The opposition accused police of brutality, using live bullets to break up rallies. The man who died in the western city of Kisumu was said to have fallen down while running away from clashes. Officials at the hospital where he was taken said he had no gunshot wounds. Kisumu is the bedrock of opposition leader Raila Odinga, who lost the 2013 vote and unsuccessfully challenged the result in court. The protests called by CORD are in their fourth week. They have been marked by violence, with the police accused of beating up protesters to break up a demonstration in Nairobi last week.   Less

Around 100 protesters, most of them holding flowers, set out to march through the streets of the capital. They sang songs denouncing: President Robert Mugabe Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa Central Bank Governor John Mangudya They have all backed the measure. Several protesters set Zimbabwean cheques on fire. What did the police do? The protesters were stopped and dispersed by riot police. Some tried to give police flowers but the officers remained impassive. A Reuters witness says tear gas and water cannon were used. Why were they protesting? Zimbabweans fear the central bank’s plan to introduce bank notes or “bond notes” in October to ease the dollar shortage could open the door to rampant money printing. This happened in 2008. Inflation hit 500 billion percent and wiped out people’s pensions and savings. Are protests commonplace in Zimbabwe? At the moment, yes. In the last few months, there have been almost weekly protests against economic hardship. Some have ended in clashes with police. There have been movements such as: #ThisFlag #Tajamuka (slang in Shona language for “defiance” They have used Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp to rally Zimbabweans against the leadership of the 92-year-old Mugabe. His government is being blamed for the economic problems. What has the government said? In June, President Robert Mugabe defended the introduction of local banknotes. He called them “surrogate currency” that would discourage criminals from coming to Zimbabwe to “fish” for dollars. What they are saying “We know what happens when the central bank prints money. Our message to Mugabe, Chinamasa and Mangudya is that we don’t want those bondnotes,” – Promise Mkwananzi, leader of “Tajamuka”. “This is the build up to a big protest. They have seen nothing yet. The demonstrators called for the resignation of Environment Minister Mohamad Al Machnouk. Police moved in after protesters ignored an ultimatum from the authorities to leave. The head of Green Party, who witnessed what happened, sympathises with their cause but not their methods. “We deplore state institutions being taken hostage. We can’t accept people entering state buildings like this. Our cause is purely environmental,” Nada Zaarour said angrily. Outside the building hundreds more demonstrated. The protesters say the waste crisis reflects the rot inside Lebanon’s political system. One man who was evicted from the ministry complained of rough treatment by the police. “They first cut the electricity and the water… then they came in. We told them we would leave in a dignified manner but they hit everyone on the head as we walked down the stairs, for no reason,” he shouted. The “You Stink” campaign has brought thousands of disaffected Lebanese onto the streets in recent weeks. The movement which began over uncollected rubbish has evolved into a widespread protest against corruption and government incompetence. The leader of the pro-Kurdish opposition People’s Democratic Party (HDP), Selahattin Demirtas says civilians have been the main casualties during the security crackdown, claiming 211 deaths it began. “We don’t want the ruling AK Party’s murky war in our cities, in our lands and our country. We dare to take to the streets against this. This protest was against those who dare to (start) a war. It is a crime to ban this protest or say it is illegal,” he said.
