Now in control of Congress, the opposition is exploring different ways of removing Maduro, including moves to trigger a referendum on the issue. “I am here with my signature, my presence and my voice to call for an end to this corrupt president who has ruined Venezuela,” said university teacher Patricia Rivon, one of those signing up to call for the plebiscite. “This is a message that we are sending to the world, that Venezuela has had enough, enough of Maduro,” said fellow opposition protester Enrique Alvarado. “The people have come onto the street and won’t return home until Nicolas Maduro resigns.” But at a rival rally in the capital, the man himself was keen to show that he had different concerns – notably President Obama’s renewal of sanctions on senior Venezuelan officials. It will explode,” Takieddine said. Gueant’s lawyer Philippe Bouchez El Ghozi denied the claims. “Claude Guéant has always been very clear. He never received from near or far or heard about a centime of money from Libya to support Nicolas Sarkozy’s campaign. He has repeated this multiple times to the judicial authorities,” he told Reuters news agency. France’s public prosecutor opened a judicial investigation into earlier allegations by Takieddine in 2013, but until now, he had never described how the money was transferred or directly pinpointed Sarkozy. Takieddine said he had given a written deposition to judges on Nov. 12 detailing three cash transfers between 2006-2007 and his meetings with Guéant and Sarkozy. At no point, he says, did he see the two men ever look inside the cases after he dropped them off at the interior ministry, where Sarkozy was minister at the time. Libyan officials from the Gaddafi era have previously claimed they helped finance Sarkozy’s election campaign. Mediapart’s Fabrice Arfi shared his feelings on these new revelations with Euronews. “I am convinced that the testimony of Ziad Takieddine is an event on the record, even under its judicial prism. In reality, the investigation is not stagnating, the judicial inquiry opened in April 2013. And three years later it has gone from nothing to having accumulated a considerable number of documents and testimonies. In fact what we are discovering and documenting is a potential corruption story that will probably make the Libyan scandal seem like the most serious case that the 5th Republic had to deal with.” During an interview with Euronews in 2011 Muammar Gaddafi’s second son Saif al Islam launched strong accusations against Sarkozy. “Sarkozy must return the money that he accepted to finance his electoral campaign,” Saif al Islam said. “We gave him that money and we’re ready to reveal everything about it. The first thing that we ask for from this clown is that he gives money back to the Libyan people.” Sarkozy, who was president from 2007 to 2012 and is seeking nomination as the Republican candidate in next year’s presidential poll, has always denied allegations that he took covert funding from Libya. The former French leader also has other legal headaches. In September, France’s state prosecutor said he should stand trial over funding irregularities linked to his failed 2012 re-election bid. A magistrate is due to rule whether he does or not later this month. The French daily Le Monde has cited a leaked US intelligence document for Mossad's possible involvement in last year's cyber attack on the Elysee Palace. Montebourg said: “Austerity policies of tax hikes and excessive reduction of public spending, decided by governments, are today causing the extension and unnecessary deepening of the economic crisis.” “They are a financial absurdity because, by restricting growth, they prevent their own goals from being achieved,” he continued. Montebourg’s views echo those of Hollande himself during his election campaign two years ago. Then he slammed German Chancellor Angela Merkel for insisting on austerity to bring down debt across the eurozone, saying: “Our Europe can be the lever and the solution unless it is condemned to the austerity that the incumbent (Nicolas Sarkozy) has chosen by teaming up with the German Chancellor.” The French government approved a 50 billion euro savings plan in April – although Hollande, the most unpopular French president in living memory, insisted that it was not an all-out austerity programme. January Techau, a director at Carnegie Europe, explained that Paris and Berlin remained the economic heart of Europe. “Germany is always in the limelight, but France is equally important because it is the duo of the two and the stability and strength of the two that basically the entire construction of Europe rests on. A French journalist held hostage in Aleppo has alleged that one of his captors was a Frenchman suspected of an attack on a Jewish museum in Brussels. Nicolas Henin named Mehdi Nemmouche, a 29-year-old of French-Algerian origin, reigniting concerns about the number of European jihadists fighting with Islamic State in Syria and Iraq. “After the arrest of Nemmouche for the crime alleged against him by a Brussels judge, I was given a number of audio-visual files that helped me to make a formal recognition,” said Henin. The report for French magazine Le Point also claimed Nemmouche mistreated him. “I am not aware of other Western hostages having been mistreated by him. But I did hear him torture Syrian prisoners in the building we were being kept in – it was the basement of a hospital that probably also held between 50 to 80 common law prisoners of Islamic State.” Henin, who was released in April, said Nemmouche took sadistic pleasure in mistreating prisoners. Reports suggest the alleged extremist spent more than a year in Syria before returning to Europe in March. Meanwhile Nemmouche’s French laywer Apolin Pepiezep says his client was never questioned about Syria. “Nobody asked the question of whether he went to Syria or not. Nobody can say he went there. He’ll never say he never went to Syria and nobody asked him what role he played when was in Syria. It was all about the attack that took place in Belgium.” CCTV footage from May allegedly shows Nemmouche opening fire indiscriminately at the museum in Brussels , killing four people. The Archbishop of Caracas has denounced her ode to the late president as “profanity.” “The Lord’s Prayer comes from the lips of Jesus Christ and we must therefore ensure that it remains so, any other use is profanity,” explained Cardinal Jorge Liberato Urosa Savino. “And if people say that Chavez was God, well that would be idolatry.” The country’s president said the poem was being turned into a sin. “A minority of bishops who do not represent the Catholic faithful have come in a new inquisition to persecute this young woman, a working woman, because she read a poem,” said Nicolas Maduro. “We see a hate toward Chavez from them.
