Chinese Creation MythsnnPart I - Pan'kunnIn the beginning, our entire universe was trapped within an egg.nAnd within that egg was one dark swirling mass of chaos.nResiding within the chaos was Pan'ku, the first living being.nWhen Pan'ku became aware of his confinement he broke the shell surrounding him.nFrom the chaos formed Yin, earth. And Yang, heaven.nPan'ku tried to stand but heaven crushed down upon his body, leaving the earth flat and barren.nWhen he saw this Pan'ku realized that no life could come to exist on earth.nAnd so for eighteen thousand years Pan'ku pushed the sky up with his hands and pressed down upon the earth down with his feet.nThe time came when Pan'ku saw that the earth and heavens were far enough apart that he could lie down for a much needed rest.nBut the universe was not yet complete and so it came to pass that he died in his sleep.nWith his death the universe became balanced and the creatures of earth sprang into life. And his body became one with the earth.nnPart II - Yin and YangnnYin and Yang, two spirits who also emerged from the primordial egg formed earth and heaven.nYin represented everything dark and heavy.nYang represented everything bright and light.nYin's cold breath gave birth to the waters and to the moon.nYang's hot breath became fire and the sun.nThe combination of the moon and the sun formed the stars which in turn formed the rivers, seas, rainwater, silt, and dust.nThe cycle of Yin and Yang became the four seasons.nAnd the essence of the four seasons formed the creatures that reside on earth.nnPart III - NuwkannBefore tha age of man began there lived a great mother goddess, Nuwka.nNuwka admired the beautiful creatures that emerged from Pan'ku's body, but after observing the fish and other animals, she came to the realization that they were incomplete.nEach of them lacked the proper intelligence.nSo she traveled along the coast of the yellow river and taking up a handful of yellow earth, molded it into the first human being.nShe created many more, paying attention to intricate details.nAnd these people became the wealthy and intelligent.nThose humans were created in her likeness, but instead of giving them a dragons tail like hers, she gave them two legs identical to their two arms.nBut this method took much too long. And she began to search for another way to make humans.nShe soon found a piece of rope. And discovered that the yellow earth would stick to it.nNuwka covered the rope with the clay and began flinging it.nEach clump took the form of a humannAnd Nuwka was delighted with her discovery.nThese people became the poor and less intelligent.nThen one day a god named Kong Kong became enraged at another god and accidentally rammed into a mountain causing it to crumble and fall.nThe mountain was one of the four corners that held up the corners of the sky.nNuwka was able to save the humans by covering them with her large body.nAnd the people of the earth were all grateful.nHowever, no god or goddess knew how to repair the damage, and that is why the northeast corner of the world is lower than the rest.nThe children of the earth are filled with gratitude for the great mother goddess, the beautiful Nuwka.nnnnnCopyright © 2013 Candy Graham aka Nahars All Rights Reserved Less
