Symphony of the Soil is a 104-minute documentary feature film that explores the complexity and mystery of soil. Filmed on four continents and sharing the voices of some of the world's most esteemed soil scientists, farmers and activists, the film portrays soil as a protagonist of our planetary story. Using a captivating mix of art and science, the film shows that soil is a complex living organism, the foundation of life on earth. Yet most people are soil-blind and "treat soil like dirt." Through the knowledge and wisdom revealed in this film, we can come to respect, even revere, this miraculous substance, and appreciate that treating the soil right can help solve some of our most pressing environmental problems. In addition to the feature film, there are several short films, Sonatas of the Soil, that delve deeply into soil-related topics, and several short clips, Grace Notes, that are available to stream on the film's website.nnProduced and Directed by Deborah Koons Garcia nnnLOGLINE: Symphony of the Soil explores the evolution and importance of soil in today's world. nnTAGLINE: Discover the life beneath your feet.nnhttp://www.symphonyofthesoil.comnhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt2229399/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 Less

we've ignored eachother for a long time and I'm strictly an indoor man anytime to call would be the wrong time I'll avoid you as long as I can When I was a boy we were good friends I made pies out of you when you were wet And in childhood's remembered summer weather We roughandtumbled together We were very close just you and me and the sun the world a place for having fun always so much to be done But gradually I grew away from you Of course you were still there During my earliest sexcapades When I roughandfumbled Not very well after bedtime But suddenly it was winter And you seemed so cold and dirty That I stayed indoors and acquired A taste for girls and clean clothes we found less and less to say you were jealous so one day I simply upped and moved away I still called to see you on occasions But we had little now in common And my visits grew less frequent Until finally One coldbright April morning A handful of you drummed On my fathers waxworked coffin at last it all made sense there was no need for pretence you said nothing in defence And now recently While travelling from town to town Past where you live I have become increasingly aware Of you watching me out there. Patient and unforgiving Toying with the trees. we've avoided eachother for a long time and I'm strictly a city man anytime to call would be the wrong time I'll avoid you as long as I canRoger McGoughhttp://www.poemhunter.com/poem/soil/ Less

O stony grey soil of Monaghan The laugh from my love you thieved; You took the gay child of my passion And gave me your clod-conceived. You clogged the feet of my boyhood And I believed that my stumble Had the poise and stride of Apollo And his voice my thick tongued mumble. You told me the plough was immortal! O green-life conquering plough! The mandril stained, your coulter blunted In the smooth lea-field of my brow. You sang on steaming dunghills A song of cowards' brood, You perfumed my clothes with weasel itch, You fed me on swinish food You flung a ditch on my vision Of beauty, love and truth. O stony grey soil of Monaghan You burgled my bank of youth! Lost the long hours of pleasure All the women that love young men. O can I stilll stroke the monster's back Or write with unpoisoned pen. His name in these lonely verses Or mention the dark fields where The first gay flight of my lyric Got caught in a peasant's prayer. Mullahinsa, Drummeril, Black Shanco- Wherever I turn I see In the stony grey soil of Monaghan Dead loves that were born for me.Patrick Kavanaghhttp://www.poemhunter.com/poem/stony-grey-soil/ Less

Residents of Jaltipan in the Mexican state of Veracruz prepared and ate "Chogosta," balls made of soil that is extracted from the ground and then processed and cooked, on Thursday. Pedro Martinez, the last Chogosta craftsman in the town, explained that not every soil-type is suitable for eating, but that the best soil is found at a depth of around five metres (16.40 feet) and is purple in colour and without a trace of sand. SOT, Pedro Martinez, Chogosta craftsman (Spanish): "More than anything it is used by women who are pregnant, those who are dying have tasted it and want to eat it. For the preparation of the Chogosta we crumble soil with a stick, hit it, then we pour water to soften it and form balls with our hands before putting them in the stove." SOT, Rosa Maria Garduza Lara, Director of Cultural Jaltipan Morelos Veracruz (Spanish): "[Our] grandparents were occupied for the whole afternoon [preparing these]. It tastes like a sweet or some seasonal fruit."
