ESI transformed the lobby of Terrell Place in Washington, DC, with 1,700-square-feet of motion-activated media. Technology and media are seamlessly integrated into architectural surfaces, creating an ever-evolving artwork that captures the pulse of the building.nnESI’s designers unified the expansive first floor lobby space by treating it as a single media canvas. By installing large-scale, reactive media on lobby walls and corridor portals, they created a sense of connection across the building's common areas. At 80 feet wide x 13 feet high, the largest media wall is capturing the attention and curiosity of passersby, who can see it from outside through oversize windows.nnHighlights of the media include:n• Diffused LED wall displays in the main lobbies and corridor are activated by passersby via an infrared camera system, creating beautiful scenes that ebb and flow with the morning rush and the afternoon lull.n• The displays include three content modes – ‘Seasons,’ ‘Color Play,’ and ‘Cityscape’ – offering a selection of scenes that can be programmed with varying durations and sequences, ensuring that tenants never see the same scene even if they arrive and leave at the same time every day.n• The ‘Season’ mode shows the lifecycle of the iconic Washington, DC cherry trees. PHILLIP K SMITH III : Lucid SteadnnOn the weekend of October 12th in Joshua Tree, California, artist Phillip K Smith III revealed his light based project, Lucid Stead. What was expected to be a two day event for a handful of viewers, turned into over 400 people making the journey over two weekends. People as far away as New York City and Canada traveled to the California High Desert to experience it. Numerous media sources have asked to do cover stories on the work. Thousands of photos professional and amateur, were taken, posted and shared across blogs and social media sights. In just over 30 days, Lucid Stead officially became a phenomenon.nnComposed of mirror, LED lighting, custom built electronic equipment and Arduino programming amalgamated with a preexisting structure, this architectural intervention, at first, seems alien in context to the bleak landscape. Upon further viewing, Lucid Stead imposes a delirious, almost spiritual experience. Like the enveloping vista that changes hue as time passes, Lucid Stead transforms. In daylight the 70 year old homesteader shack, that serves as the armature of the piece, reflects and refracts the surrounding terrain like a mirage or an hallucination. As the sun tucks behind the mountains, slowly shifting, geometric color fields emerge until they hover in the desolate darkness. This transformation also adapts personal perception, realigning one’s sensory priorities. A heightened awareness of solitude and the measured pace of the environment is realized.nnSmith states, "Lucid Stead is about tapping into the quiet and the pace of change of the desert. When you slow down and align yourself with the desert, the project begins to unfold before you. It reveals that it is about light and shadow, reflected light, projected light, and change."nnPhillip K Smith III received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design. He draws inspiration from the reductive logic of minimalism and the optic sensation of California's Light and Space movement. Smith’s innovation and exploitation of new technologies keeps these ideologies current. He was honored as the 2010 Artist in Residence at the Palm Springs Art Museum and was included in the exhibition, Smooth Operations: Substance and Surface in Southern California Art, alongside artists such as Peter Alexander, Larry Bell, DeWain Valentine, and Craig Kauffman at the Museum of Art and History in Lancaster CA. He has been asked to return to the museum for a solo exhibition opening in January 2014. He has been commissioned to create over a dozen monumental art works and his light based sculptures are collected Nationwide. Phillip will open a solo exhibition of lightworks at royale projects : contemporary art in Palm Desert on November 29 2013. This year, instead of shooting it myself, I decided to host a workshop to introduce other artists to the wonderful world of capturing nature through timelapse.nnThis film was made by our crew of timelapse newbies and myself over 4 days. You'll see dozens of meteors zip across the sky against a backdrop of the Milky Way. You'll also see scenes with smoke from the nearby Banning wildfire that occurred during our first day at the workshop.nnAbout the workshop:nTaught by timelapse filmmaker Henry Jun Wah Lee, participants learned how to shoot everything from static to multi-axis, day to night, and astro timelapses. At the time this was the devil's music for us, but we have learned to listen through the claps and distorted kicks and discovered that if you slow these really dark and heavy techno records down all the way to about 115 bpm, it suddenly makes them sound less frantic, ballsier and a lot sexier. Belgium at its best when pitched down.nThe covers of these records are quite generic and don't really lend themselves to animating , so we figured we would bring you the visual aspect of this musical genre that you can't not be fascinated by: the dance. We were very lucky to have found some people who can still do the typical moves, and with them dancing in front of the record sleeves (and sometimes inside of them) we bring you our ultimate tribute to a glorious period in our Belgian musical heritage. nnWe feel very strongly about this hour, and would like to show that quite often, the best things in life are already right in front of us, we just have to open our eyes (and ears) to them.
