Went out for a ride at the Oregon Sand Dunes in Winchester Bay, Oregon. Was having a great time until the accident. My Patella was shattered and my femur was broken. Most of the tendons and ligaments were torn or needed to be reattached and I have no cartilage left in the knee joint. I do have a very expensive piece of metal in there though. Definately goes down as the worst day in my life so far! Ken Chrisman location: Oregon Sand Dunes occurrence_date: 08/31/2014 [For licensing/usage please contact licensing@viralhog.com] Less

From op: My dad and his friend have been working on converting a glider with a small engine for gaining altitude from a gas to an electric propulsion system. To test the system that the've designed and built themselves, they have first mounted it on a classic VW Bug that weighs the same amount as their glider. This way, they can test the system under load while still on the ground! These guys are phenomenally skilled and know what they are doing. I wouldn't try do this at home. I don't think anyone else should either. Less

As many as 11 million Volkswagen cars could be affected by the worst scandal in the company’s 78-year-history. Falsified emissions testing on US vehicles could cost at least 6.5 billion euros but now there’s also talk of mega fines and even a criminal probe . The future of CEO Martin Winterkorn is in doubt. The firm’s senior supervisory board meets today – that is if talks haven’t already begun. Market Analyst Jack Nerad speculated onr whether the staying or going of Winterkorn was a priority: “I don’t know that whether him (Winterkorn) stepping down or not is going to be material to the issue. I think to the American consumer concerned about this, I think it’s ‘What are they going to do about my car? What are they going to do to compensate me for the issues I’m going to deal with going forward?’ I think those are the bigger issues.” How Volkswagen got away with diesel deception http://t.co/WyWLcS8hs5 pic.twitter.com/usWVRiSuer— The New York Times (@nytimes) September 22, 2015 At the heart of the problem is a so-called “defeat device”, which allowed VW diesel cars to emit less during tests than they would while driving normally. One German newspaper has described the manipulation of pollution data to boost sales as a slap in the face to customers who paid a premium for what they thought was a greener car. Some countries in Europe and Asia intend to launch their own investigations . Less

Car maker Volkswagen has posted a third-quarter operating loss of 3.48 billion euros. It is the German group’s first quarter loss in more than 15 years, and comes after US authorities found its diesel vehicles had software installed that allowed them to cheat emissions tests. WV said it now expects its operating profit to drop “significantly below” last year’s record 12.7 billion euros. During a news conference, the German transport minister responded to a question about why the fraud was not noticed sooner. “It is noticeable, that on the side of the US environment authorities, there has been a certain kind of anger, that confidence has been destroyed, and we have a long way to go to rebuild it, and there is no way to whitewash the issue. That’s what the colleagues of the environment authorities have made quite clear to us.” Japan launch delayed VW’s new boss Herbert Diess apologised at the Tokyo Motor Show for the scandal. He promised to win back customer trust. He said the priority is to find out what happened and make sure it never happens again. In the meantime VW will delay the launch of a diesel car in Japan. A court in Germany has rejected a Volkswagen customer’s attempt to cancel his VW contract after the company’s emissions scandal. The German carmaker admitted in September that it had fitted illegal emissions cheating software on about eleven million VW cars worldwide. The court said the dealer was not to blame. The customer said he will appeal the court’s decision. “This decision is based on an isolated case which concerns this particular case of this particular plaintiff with this particular car,” said District Court spokesman Michael Rehaag. “It must be stressed that the defendant party is not Volkswagen but a car dealership. The car dealership is a dealer and to this day, we have absolutely no indication that dealers were aware of these manipulations.” US law firm Hausfield said it would pursue claims from European customers affected by VW’s wrongdoing, a day after a three billion euro lawsuit from institutional investors became public.
