Is he an asshole?nnThat’s the question everyone asks about sex toy entrepreneur Brian Sloan. It’s the question that inspired our video crew to follow him around for a week in Berlin. It was also the last question I asked him during our interview.nnHis answer was “no” but came with a concession, "It’s not completely inaccurate to call me an asshole." nnSurely, working in the sex toy industry doesn’t automatically designate a person an asshole. But then, not every sex toy manufacturer uses a contest to design their products. More specifically, an online vaginal beauty contest that prompted “everyday women” to upload pictures of their vulvas to be rated on a scale of 1-10. http://www.vaginacontest.com/nnIt’s a concept that -- critics would argue -- quite literally objectifies women.nnBrian sees it differently, "They didn’t call it sexist when dildos were made from men’s penises." nnFair point, except while dildos were fashioned after actual dicks, actual dicks weren’t acquired via contests. But if they had, would it have improved the product?nnBrian’s contest was designed to determine which vulvas men preferred. The guidelines had one major qualifier: No pubic hair. To be fair, this was more of a parameter than an indictment of misogyny (the scanning machine required a smooth texture), but it inherently restricted the results.nnIt was also the only rule in an otherwise lucid submission process, which simply required an applicant to post a picture with a piece of paper displaying #AutoblowVaginalBeautyContest. Such a casual approach resulted in a pretty big surprise the day of the scanning -- one of the finalists actually fabricated her submission.nnThe thing is, the results were irrelevant. By simply creating the contest, Brian Sloan had over a million people clicking through his website. The traffic nearly crashed its servers. Publications like The Daily Beast and The Gloss were deriding the contest as sexist. But even its staunchest critics conceded its brilliance as a marketing ploy.nnUltimately, Brian is less a sex expert than a businessman -- albeit a businessman in an industry where it’s not uncommon to lunch with a giant dildo on the table. Perhaps years in an industry where day-to-day operations are centered around subjects generally considered taboo would shift anyone's perception of normalcy. It would be accurate to describe a man who uses deli meat to describe a vulva as a misogynist. With Brian, maybe he's a weird guy in a weird industry.nnBut is he an asshole? But kill rates spike in high poverty areas with limited access to affordable veterinary services for spaying and neutering. In the rural South, unsterilized dogs are often allowed to roam outdoors. Many counties have weak or unenforced leash laws.nnA lack of reinforced leash laws, along with other issues such as backyard dog breeding and dog fighting, have contributed to the overpopulation crisis in the south.nnTo put this into context, according to PETA,nnJust one unaltered female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in only six years.nnTwo of the organizations working to relocate animals include the Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue (based in Brooklyn, NY) and the Sweet Onion Animal Protection Society (based in Vidalia, Georgia). Both organizations work together to rescue dogs from high kill rate shelters.nnSome shelters have kill rates of 90-95 percent, which means that 90-95 percent of dogs that enter those shelters will end up being euthanized.nnAccording to the ASPCA, around 3.9 million dogs enter animal shelters nationwide every year.nnOrganizations like BBAR and SOAPS utilize tools like social media to relocate animals to areas where they are more likely to be adopted. They volunteer long hours, raise money and coordinate transportation for these pups across thousands of miles to give them their best chance at living a better life.nnOne wonderful dog, Turner (renamed Miles Teller), is granted a second chance through the help of BBAR and SOAPS. Before meeting them, we were fascinated by Zulu P, the group of four developmentally challenged rappers who create some wild beats. Our first meeting, however, was filled with a range of emotions: intrigue, awe, and -- admittedly -- discomfort. The latter probably stemmed from pity, but nonetheless felt typical of most people who, instead of acknowledging the difficult things in life, look away because it's easy.nnBut with Zulu P, it's impossible to look away.nnTheir music itself is loud and colorful, but the group dynamic provides a fascinating look into their personalities. Zulu P was dreamed up by Marley G, but it's T Roc's show and he makes you know it, freestyling straight into our camera without prompt. His personality at times borders on domineering, a fact often called out by Andrina, who has a beautiful voice, an uncanny sense of pitch and has a personality that serves to anchor the group. This allows room for Lil' EB, the most humble member of Zulu P but who might have the best flow.nnThe four have creative disagreements and aspirational differences. Most of them want money. One seems content creating sick beats. Another talks about bringing back old school hip-hop, tired of rap denigrating women and celebrating violence. They joke around and dance and tease each other and have egos and offend. Everything they say and do is without inhibition or fear.nnIn many ways, they're like most people.nnExcept that's not really true: Most people live their lives without passion, side-barring what they want for what's easy. For Zulu P, each has a disability causing them to experience life differently than most people -- but a disability doesn't make a life experience any less valid. They know what they love and wake up every day to do it. There's a seemingly infinite amount of clichés about brotherhood. And for the most part, they're true. Growing up, playing sports, listening to music, and developing passions is immeasurably better when you have a sibling to share it all with.nnWhen Eric started skateboarding at age 6, he put his little brother on. Together they started filming skate videos and James Bond remakes in their backyard. Along with their older brother Corey, Jason and Eric had dreams of starting "Sherman Brothers Productions" and spending their lives in the creative space they had carved for themselves. Every summer, the boys left for William Lawrence Camp in New Hampshire, where Eric would one day become a counselor.nnThose dreams were halted in 2006, when Eric was diagnosed with Leukemia at the age of 17. After a four-year battle, four rounds of chemotherapy, and a bone marrow transplant, Eric passed away. Throughout his sickness, he held onto the energy and passion for life that inspired everyone he came into contact with.nnEric’s final wish for his little brother was for him to continue with the passions they built together, on his own. Five years later, Jason’s pain was more evident than ever. He needed to find a way to reinvigorate Eric’s memory and spirit.nnJason decided to quit his 9-to-5 job and plan a massive skate trip with his best friend Tommy — a 450 mile journey up the east coast -- from his house in the west village of Manhattan, to William Lawrence Camp in New Hampshire, revisiting places where he had so many formative memories with both of his brothers. The trip itself would serve as a fundraiser for the camp, to help kids who couldn't afford the same experience they had every summer. In 2001, census-takers in the United Kingdom and other commonwealth countries noticed a curious trend: nearly 1% of responders designated their religion as Jedism. The impact of a film released nearly 40 years ago is obvious. It's only a slight exaggeration to say those who love "Star Wars" do so religiously. But an actual religion?nnMany churches practice varying forms of Jedism, but none have more members than the Temple of the Jedi Order. The church has occasional in-person meet-ups, but by and large it exists almost entirely on the Internet. They have malleable doctrines and processes and are well structured, despite its leaders -- yes, a Jedi Council -- being scattershot around the world: France, the UK and even Texas. Like any religion, members of the church have a range of beliefs -- while one approaches it casually, someone else believes they can levitate cars with their mind.nnWhen we asked the Temple to refer us to someone in the process of becoming a Jedi Knight, they gave us the contact information for Alex Bird. My first conversations with him revealed a guy far too rational to fall on the "mind control" part of the spectrum. Talking more, however, I was struck by just how grounded he was. He works as a behavioral therapist in upstate New York, living with his wife and a son who just celebrated his second birthday.nnEverything about him felt "normal," minus the inordinate amount of his life devoted to exploring different belief systems. He's spent time in Catholicism, Buddhism and Atheism, and has studied a range of texts, from the Quran to Karl Marx to Ayn Rand. He admits he still carries bits and pieces of each, but no belief system perfectly aligned with reality. Which is to say, his reality: Rational as he is, he believes in more than just the scientific nature of things.nnThe Temple bridged that spectrum and brought with it an intricate set of values that, when distilled, resemble our perception of a Jedi: violence only when necessary, respect and simplicity. There's an implicit emphasis on impulse control which -- with respect to his job of essentially helping people with traumatic brain injuries re-integrate into society -- means he doesn't compromise many of his values.nnThe Temple strongly resembles Alex's most recent jaunt in traditional religion: Buddhism. His departure had less to do with its belief system than the lack of a stateside community (he practiced in a monastery in Asia). Because the Temple exists online, Alex is part of a community of open-minded people who encourage discussion and diversity and is also void of the heavy-handedness from his Catholic upbringing.nnI was so taken by how honest, well thought out and happy he was that I knew a lot of people would appreciate his world view. I also knew a lot more people would sooner laugh at than listen to someone claiming to be a Jedi Knight. Why did he choose a religion and terminology that's so silly?nnThat's why I do it! When you stop having fun with something and you take it so seriously, you start to lose interest.nnHe doesn't care if people laugh at him. Whether it's his "Star Wars" literature, his "nerd armor" or his $10 lightsaber pissing off the dog, he laughs at himself.nnMore importantly, he's not looking for converts. He doesn't believe religion is for all people. He has no plans to raise his son into his religion. He just wants to raise a good person. “He came up on the bike, dropped the bike, took out a gun, and shot him in the head,” president of the Coalition to End Broken Windows (CEBW) Josmar Trujillo says, pointing towards the narrow walkway over the FDR. n“Cops that weren’t even on duty came out. There were at least 20 cop cars over there alone, [because] when a cop gets shot. The whole world stops.” nnAfter the murder of police officer Randolph Holder, 33, in East Harlem, the world did stop, not just for the those mourning the loss of an innocent man - but also for the police reform movement.nn“This was like the last straw for the DeBlasio Administration,” Trujillo adds. “After that a whole bunch of stuff around bail reform and court reform kinda hit a 180.”nnFellow activist and founder of the Police Reform Organizing Project (PROP), Bob Gangi, agrees: “The political narrative that came out of that [...] rolled back, in effect, the momentum of our movement.”nnIn an effort to switch the focus back to police accountability, Gangi needed to find a way to shift public focus back to eliminating harmful police practices, namely Broken Windows & Quotas. Since the attacks on NYPD officers, PROP - and other reform groups like them - could no longer depend on large turnouts for city-wide protests and demonstrations. Gangi would have to work with a fraction of the volunteers they had following the Eric Garner ruling, but still garner a large response from the public.nnPARK SLOPE ACTIONnThe solution came in the form of a public demonstration, what Gangi calls the “Park Slope Action.” Picture activists approaching White residents in Park Slope, a gentrified neighborhood in Brooklyn, with fake summons. PROP volunteers cited primarily jaywalking, an infraction strictly enforced in low-income communities of color in New York. The event managed to gather an increasingly large amount of press coverage and notoriety. nnGangi, eager to repeat the success, moved to build on the momentum with another similar demonstration. However, the problems of where and how to repeat it were stimied by the approaching cold weather. In the meanwhile, PROP kept moving:nn“One of my approaches to political action is that you keep moving. You keep active,” Bob says. “You do petition days, reports, public forums, targeted actions - those are the kind of activities that PROP has engaged in since its first year.”nnTHE QUOTA PANELn“Some of you might say Quotas don't exist, let me tell you something," Retired NYPD Detective Carlton Berkley bellows into the mic, "Quotas DO exist. They've existed before me, they exist now, and they'll continue to exist." nnEnter PROP's NYPD Quotas Panel. Det. Berkley became one of the many voices that came to be heard during the Q and A. November’s terrorist attacks in Paris precipitated an ugly cycle that’s become the norm in recent American history.nnFear and xenophobia led to the rise of opportunists willing to perpetuate each for personal gain.nnThe current targets: Syrian refugees.nnThe current beneficiary: There’s the temptation to say Donald Trump, but he's hardly singular. After all, 31 governors opposed allowing refugees into their states.nnIronically, we started filming our take on the Syrian refugee crisis a month earlier. Our subject, Sana Mustafa, was an activist in the Arab Spring and now represents one of fewer than 3,000 Syrian refugees in the US. Having arrived penniless in 2013, she earned a full scholarship to Bard College where she speaks out on behalf of fellow refugees in her spare time.nnHer resume alone seemed to provide a strong counterargument to a then-popular suggestion that refugees, if admitted en masse, would leech off American society. Moreover, her story itself, while providing a chilling overview of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the inner workings of the Arab Spring, brought with it unexpected familiarities.nnPoughkeepsie, New York reminded Sana of her hometown in Syria.nnShe learned English by watching "Grey’s Anatomy" and "Friends." Her parents raised her to appreciate Syrian culture, though they encouraged variety, especially in terms of political perspectives. She had a pulse on the injustices perpetuated by the government and was inspired to put beliefs into actions.nnThus, in 2011, with the Syrian uprising against the authoritarian regime of Assad, it was inevitable Sana and her entire family would join the revolution. Perhaps just as inevitable was Assad’s response to the revolution: arrests, torture, barrel bombs and, notably, the use of chemical weapons.nnSana was imprisoned. So was her older sister. Both were held temporarily, but the family would experience far worse. In July 2013, Sana’s father was abducted with no trace of his whereabouts.nnTheir safety jeopardized, her mother and two sisters fled to neighboring Turkey, leaving their belongings, friends and extended family behind. Sana -- who was traveling to the United States for what was supposed to be a few weeks -- suddenly found herself without a home and was granted political asylum.nnThrough a certain lens, Sana’s subsequent time in America proves it to be a land of opportunity. Having achieved a full scholarship, a green card and a support network, Sana is incredibly deferential when it comes to the people who helped her regain her footing in the US. This visceral reaction is what propelled Genevieve to devote her life to aiding the pets of our country's homeless population.nnThat was 2008. Eight years later, Genevieve and her daughter Renee run a nationwide organization called Pets of the Homeless.nnAccording to the National Coalition for the Homeless, there are up to 3.5 million people experiencing homelessness in a given year. Roughly 10 percent of homeless people are pet owners, leaving potentially hundreds of thousands of homeless pets throughout the country.nnSo far, Genevieve and her team have provided food and emergency medical care to nearly 13,000 of them.nnThrough interacting with the owners of these pets, they've learned something crucial about homeless people: What they lack in their ability to provide vital resources like food, shelter and medicine for their pets, they reciprocate tenfold in love.nnIn telling their story, we learned the scope of the stigma against homeless pet owners. Many Americans are repulsed by the idea of a homeless person with a pet, believing these dogs and cats are unjustly kept as a ploy to guilt people into giving them money.nnThe reality is a pet is most often the only companion a homeless person has left. It may be the only connection he or she feels to a living being. The bond between them is unbreakable, tied together by experiences that simply cannot be understood without having lived through them yourself.nnServing an overlooked population is far from easy work. Communicating with the people they are trying to help can be tough, as the homeless often don't have easy access to phones and computers. Many of the women they help are victims of domestic violence who have fled abusive situations with nowhere to go.nnGenevieve and Renee see no end to the work they're doing, and that only serves as motivation to continue.
