In a new wave of crime that occurs in an instant, thieves are cagily sliding into victim's cars and snatching valuables from open windows, in what police are calling "sliding." From Corbin, Ky., to Tampa, slippery sliders are being caught on camera all across the country. Sometimes the perpetrator is caught red-handed, but most of the time the victim has no idea until it's too late. Often operating at gas stations while customers are casually pumping fuel, thieves lying in wait pounce, snatching purses and other valuables, then running off. "They're not looking for a confrontation," Houston police officer Jim Woods told ABC News. "They just want the property, because they know it's being left abandoned and you're not paying enough attention." And police say these types of crimes are on the rise. In an incident caught on tape at a Houston gas station, a woman pulled up and walked into the station as a man in a neighboring vehicle cased the inside of her car. Once she returned to the pump, the slider struck. "It's very scary that someone could just surprise you and just steal all of your belongings," the victim said. Authorities say the best thing the public can do is lock car doors every time the vehicle is exited. "It's yours, protect it," Woods said. "And the easiest way to protect it is keep it locked up, keep it with you, and don't leave it in the vehicle unoccupied."   Less

A TIGER attack on a handler at Australia Zoo on Queensland's Sunshine Coast yesterday afternoon left tourists reeling and the handler in a serious but stable condition with neck wounds. Video shows a close up view of the attack, handlers rescuing the victim and pursued by the tiger, and airlift to hospital. Sorry, but no other footage available at the moment. The attack at 2.45pm Queensland time occurred towards the end of a feeding session and public show, when one tiger leapt up and embraced senior handler Dave Styles in what witnesses called a "bear hug" before wrestling the man into a nearby water feature. Grainy footage of the incident shows three other handlers running in to pull the man from under the water and take him away, but the man fell and the tiger pounced again before the other staff took him to safety. The tiger attacked the 32-year-old man on the neck, leaving two serious puncture wounds. The man had to be stabilised on site before being airlifted to Royal Brisbane Hospital where he reportedly underwent surgery for his wounds. Australia Zoo, founded by "croc hunter" Steve Irwin and run by his widow, Terri, is one of the biggest tourist attractions on the Sunshine Coast. Staff said yesterday's incident was "an accident" and "not an act of aggression". Zoo director Wes Mannion said the trainer had nine years' experience with big cats and raised the tiger since it arrived at the zoo as a cub. He said Australia Zoo was conducting an investigation in conjunction with workplace health and safety authorities. Australia Zoo keeps three Bengal and eight Sumatran tigers. Portsmouth, NH - A 16-year male has been arrested after being caught on surveillance video stealing a purse from an elderly woman at Walmart, according to police in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The store surveillance video showed the teen entering the store and following an elderly woman to her car. When she looked away, he grabbed the purse from her carriage and ran off. He then returned to the store and used items from the purse to make a purchase. Acting on a tip from the video, police were able to find the suspect at his house. The teen's name will not be released because he is a juvenile. He has been charged with theft and will be petitioned by juvenile court at a later date for arraignment.   Less

Laredo, TX - On Thursday, September 17, 2015, at approximately 4:03 p.m., police were dispatched to 4205 San Bernardo Avenue to a robbery call. Upon arrival, police discovered a female victim outside the restaurant talking on the phone with 911 dispatchers. According to the victim she and a man were sitting inside the restaurant when a male subject stole her purse and ran outside to a getaway vehicle. Both the victim and her male companion chased the male subject to a light brown, older model vehicle that appeared to be a Ford Taurus with temporary paper tags. The woman caught up to the male subject and struggled over the purse as the suspect attempted to flee. The victim was subsequently dragged a short distance and sustained minor injuries to her head. An ambulance responded and treated the victim at the scene. The male subject was described as medium built, wearing a green shirt with white lettering on the front side, and blue jeans. They also recalled observing a female riding in the front passenger seat holding a small child. The male companion chased the suspect vehicle on foot as it traveled towards Santa Ursula and then observed the vehicle drive west on Chicago Street. A man is accused of breaking one of the Ten Commandments in a North Lauderdale church after deputies say he stole a purse from a woman who was deep in prayer. On the Sunday before Christmas, the 84-year-old woman was in the chapel at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Roman Catholic Church with other worshippers when a man briefly sat in chairs behind her. In video released by the Broward Sheriff's Office, the man can be seen leaning over a row of chairs before he takes the woman's Coach bag and runs away. The woman pursues him outside the church at 1400 S. State Road 7, but he got away, the sheriff's office said. Two days later, the Coach bag was found in the church's cemetery. The wallet, money and other valuables were missing, the agency said. The sheriff's office asks anyone with information to call Detective Alexander Briz at 954-722-5800 or Broward County Crime Stoppers, at 954-493-8477. San Jose, CA - San Jose police announced Tuesday that they have arrested a suspect in 20 purse snatchings that started in November and targeted mainly older Vietnamese shoppers as they returned to their vehicles. A police surveillance operation at about 10 a.m. Saturday allegedly showed Thao Minh Luong entering the parking lot at Senter Foods at 3975 Senter Road. Luong drove slowly around the parking lot a number of times until he stopped next to a 67-year-old woman, according to police. The woman was putting groceries into her vehicle and Luong allegedly took her purse after she put it into her vehicle. He did not injure the woman, police said. Luong went to another parking lot nearby and was allegedly getting rid of the stolen property when detectives arrested him. Police said they found stolen property in Luong’s vehicle and in a motel room he was renting. Investigators believe some of the property was taken in other robberies. In other cases, Luong would allegedly come up to the victim from behind and rip away the purse, according to police. In one incident, Luong allegedly punched a 67-year-old woman who did not release her purse quick enough. In other cases, he would take the purse after the victim placed it in their vehicle and then fled in a vehicle, police said.   Less

Falls Church, VA - Police are looking for a woman they say stole a purse containing $10,000 that was going to be used to pay for a local student’s college tuition.The theft allegedly happened on January 10 at a Falls Church Dunkin’ Donuts in the 6100 block of Arlington Boulevard. A woman and her 18-year-old daughter stopped by the store for breakfast around 11:50 a.m. before making the road trip to girl's university -- Penn State. They left the store, and almost immediately realized that the girl’s purse, which contained $10,000 in cash, was left behind. When they returned to the store, they found that the purse and the cash inside were missing. In the surveillance video released by the Fairfax County police, you can see the purse catches the eye of the suspect. She walks over and checks out her surroundings. Finally, she makes a move and swipes the bag. She then leaves in a dark-colored SUV parked outside. The vehicle is believed to be a 2009 to 2011 Mitsubishi Endeavor. “It never crossed my mind that this could happen,” said victim Maria Esteves. Esteves and her daughter, Liliana, said they were only gone for five or six minutes before realizing they forgot the purse. “We got back and the bag was not there,” Esteves said. “I could not believe it. At first, I thought it was a joke and my daughter kept looking at the ceiling saying they have cameras.” “This woman is trying to put her kids through college and we feel for her,” said Fairfax County Police Officer Tawny Wright. The suspect is described as a white female with a medium build, between 30 and 40-years-old and about 5 feet 7 inches tall.
