Thousands rally in Jerusalem for pot legalization. 19/04/2014 Police seal off park next to Knesset in attempt to head off ‘Big Bong Night’ protest; 30 arrested. soome 2,000 people massed outside the Knesset in Jerusalem on Saturday night to demand the legalization of cannabis. The protesters were blocking the entry road to the Knesset early Sunday morning and clashing with police, who were attempting to dispel the demonstration and reopen the road. Thirty protesters were arrested, 23 for disturbing the peace, after they blocked the Yitzhak Rabin Boulevard to traffic, and seven for drug violations. Demonstrators smoked pot publicly, and chanted “the people demand legal cannabis,” a spin off of the slogan for the 2011 social justice protests. The protest, dubbed “The Big Bong Night,” was originally slated to take place in the nearby Wohl Rose Park, but police sealed off the area in an attempt to prevent it from taking place. The Pentagon confirms that US and 'partner nation forces' have commenced large-scale bombing raids against Islamic State extremists in Syria in a fresh offensive against the fighters of the Islamic State (ISIL) using cruise missiles, drones and warplanes. The attacks, which opened with a barrage of cruise missiles from US navy warships, represent a major escalation of Mr Obama’s war against ISIL, The strikes, which included contributions from as yet officially unspecified “partner nations” were announced by the Pentagon late last night and were concentrated around the city of Raqqa, the militants’ main stronghold close to the border with Iraq. Unconfirmed reports cite those partners included Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan and Bahrain, although their exact roles in the military action were unclear. The strike against ISIL is an unprecedented and unexpected show of regional solidarity against the terrorist group that has rampaged through Syria and Iraq.
