The American College of Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Neurology have presented studies which show that muscle cramps are caused by excessive firings of nerve cells in the spinal cord which control muscle contraction. And capsaicin, the spicy essence of peppers, can theoretically overload sensory nerves in the mouth, esophagus, and stomach.
