The semi-official Fars and Mehr news agencies say their preliminary findings show the hardline conservatives are lagging behind in several cities, after holding on to the majority for over a decade. Voters have been asked to elect a new parliament and Assembly of Experts. The Assembly chooses the Supreme Leader. Particular emphasis is being placed on the ballot this time as Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is in poor health and may soon have to be replaced. Official sources say the parliamentary election, is too tight to call. However, analysts suggest reformist President Hassan Rouhani and his supporters — with the additional backing garnered from some moderate conservatives — will secure a bigger presence than in prior votes. His ally Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani appears to be leading the race for membership of the Assembly, the IRNA official news agency reports. Peru Drugs Bust: Pair Appear In Police Video A Scottish teenager and a woman from Ireland deny knowing they were carrying £1.5m of cocaine in their luggage. A video has emerged of a British and an Irish woman speaking to police shortly after they were arrested on suspicion of cocaine-smuggling in Peru. The footage shows the two women answering questions shortly after they were held at an airport near the capital, Lima. Melissa Reid, 19, and Michaela McCollum, 20, protested their innocence after police found 11kg (24.2lbs) of cocaine worth £1.5 million pounds in their luggage. The police footage also shows an officer examining a row of food bags, in which the drug was allegedly hidden. But, as a result of her complaint, Deryl Nelson, park ranger for the City of Chattanooga at Coolidge Park, has been fired from the job he loves. Deryl is known to some in the area as the “dancing park ranger” for his enthusiasm for having a bit of fun and providing some light entertainment for park guests while on duty. Allegedly, it a little over a year, when the Tennessee resident joined a large group of people dancing to Los del Rio’s seminal classic, “Macarena,” and the group responded well to it. From that point, he would often dance while on the job in uniform ..... until this month Melissa Parsons shot video of him and complained. Mr. Nelson says that dancing was just a manner in which he expressed himself, describing it as, "Clean fun. It's nothing like, you know, doing any bumping and grinding.” His employer, the public works department of the City of Chattanooga determined it was inappropriate and fired him for two violations: “conduct unbecoming of an employee,” and “inefficiency or negligence in performance of duties.” Mr. Nelson's employment record shows he has been reprimanded in the past, once for hitting a vehicle, and another time for making an “unwelcome comment” about a co-worker. More than 250 Russian lorries are still waiting in a field near the border with Ukraine as officials from both countries finalise the practical details for delivering their cargo. On board – the Russians have said – is humanitarian aid for people trapped by the fighting between Kyiv’s troops and pro-Moscow separatists. Russia says the Ukrainian offensive is causing a humanitarian catastrophe for the civilian population in Donetsk and Luhansk where the conflict is concentrated. The Ukrainians fears the convoy could be used to help resupply the rebels. The Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe has representatives at the scene who confirmed the two sides are talking to each other. The Red Cross has said it will distribute the food and other supplies .. once it gets assurances its people would be safe. It also wants inspections by Ukrainian border guards and customs agents to confirm the strictly humanitarian nature of the cargo. The roads in the area on the Russian side are heavy with military vehicles. Kyiv has claimed it destroyed part of a Russian armoured column on Ukrainian territory in the early hours of Friday morning, but has yet to provide proof. The Russia Defence Ministry called that a “fantasy”. Ukraine has not made clear if the vehicles were manned by Russian soldiers or separatist irregulars. The report of the attack on the armoured column on Friday raised concerns that the Ukraine conflict could morph into an open confrontation between Russia and Western-backed Kiev. But Moscow made no threat of retaliation. In Washington, the White House said it could not confirm that Russian vehicles had been attacked on Ukrainian soil. On Friday, Britain’s Guardian and Daily Telegraph newspapers said that their reporters had witnessed more than 20 military vehicles, including armoured personnel carriers and fuel tankers, entering Ukraine from Russia at a remote unofficial border crossing.   Less

The UN refugee agency said more than double that number are displaced within the country. More than ever, neighbours Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan are struggling to cope with the influx, claiming hundreds of thousands more Syrians haven’t formally registered as refugees. But many Syrians say it’s impossible to stay as the civil war rages: One refugee said: “We couldn’t take it anymore; from being hungry to being cold, being under siege, being bombarded all the time. We saw people die in front of our eyes because of the bombing from both sides. We could no longer stay there. We couldn’t take it; me, my brother, daughter and sister simply couldn’t take it anymore.” As ordinary families become more desperate to leave, officials and smuggling gangs appear to be cashing in at the border. “The journey out of Syria is becoming tougher. We have been told that many people are forced to pay bribes at armed checkpoints proliferating along the borders and that the price for smugglers – and many have to resort to the transport using smugglers in order to get out – is becoming very steep,” said Melissa Fleming, head of communications for the refugee agency UNHCR. The UN warns that the Syrian exodus is its biggest refugee operation ever and has called for more countries to share the cost burden. American Comedian Joan Rivers died on Thursday – aged 81 – a week after suffering a heart attack in the middle of throat surgery. A trail-blazer for women comedians, Rivers’ sharp tongue won her a break on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in the 1960s. She later went on be the first female guest host of the American late night talk show before launching her own rival three years later, which failed. More recently, she made Hollywood celebrities cower, hurling insult after insult at their dress sense for a TV show called Fashion Police. Rivers’ cutting one-liners often won her famous enemies. But she often turned her wicked wit against herself. Describing herself as the “plastic surgery poster girl”, Rivers once remarked that she’d had so much cosmetic surgery they would probably donate her body to Tupperware. On August 28, Rivers was rushed to hospital and put on a life support machine following a heart attack during minor surgery at a New York outpatient clinic. After being stabilised, her daughter Melissa says Rivers’ condition deteriorated on Thursday and that she was surrounded by family and close friends when she died. Thousands of Syrian Kurds are trying to get into Turkey and safety, fleeing the oncoming ISIL horde. But at the border the welcome many see is of ranks of police, and tear gas in the air. Turkish Kurds have been attacking security forces that they believe are complicit in their compatriot’s suffering. Turkish police used tear gas to disperse the protests, yet only 20 kilometres away the Kurdish peshmurga infantry is fighting ISIL tooth and nail to protect the city of Kobani, under heavy ISIL attack from three sides. Turkey now says it has over one and a half million Syrian refugees on its soil, but unofficial estimates say the refugee numbers are double that. And I understand Rémi – because we’re here for him as well. He fought for life not death,” said one protester. Sunday saw protests in several French cities. At an unofficial rally in Paris police detained over 60 people who were later released. Although tense there was none of the violence seen on Saturday in Nantes and Toulouse. Environmentalists have blamed a small minority for provoking a confrontation with police while at the same time criticising police tactics. The proposed dam at Sivens has split opinion – those opposed say it will destroy a reservoir of biodiversity , while supporters claim it will ensure irrigation and the development of high value crops. It bites sleeping victims, ingests the blood and defecates on them; patients then unknowingly rub the feces into open membranes. Chagas disease is seen as a “silent killer” by those who study and treat it, as it can often lurk in people’s bloodstreams for up to two decades before causing their organs to fail. The initial stage of the tropical illness ‒ the acute phase ‒ is mostly symptom-free and lasts for the first few weeks or months, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If a patient does exhibit symptoms, they can easily be mistaken for another disease. The symptoms noted by the patient can include fever, fatigue, body aches, headache, rash, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and vomiting. The signs on physical examination can include mild enlargement of the liver or spleen, swollen glands, and local swelling (a chagoma) where the parasite entered the body, the CDC explained. "People don't normally feel sick," Melissa Nolan Garcia, a research associate at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and the lead author of two of three recently published studies, explained in a statement, "so they don't seek medical care, but it ultimately ends up causing heart disease in about 30 percent of those who are infected." It is the second ‒ or chronic‒ phase that is deadly. Last week some 380 cyclists from 37 nations flexed their leg muscles over five days of racing at the brand spanking new National velodrome on the outskirts of Paris. Australia smashed the world record to win gold in the women’s team pursuit. Annette Edmondson, Ashlee Ankudinoff, Amy Cure and Melissa Hoskins shaved almost three seconds off the previous mark to upset four-time reigning champions Great Britain. Frenchman Francois Pervis thrilled the partizan crowd when he successfully defended his one kilometer time trial title. Pervis crossed the line in a winning time of 1 minute 0.207 seconds to beat German Joachim Eilers and claim his second gold of the champs after also retaining his keirin title. Gregory Bauge sent the crowd into wild celebrations when he won his his fourth men´s sprint title. The popular Frenchman beat Russian Denis Dmitriev in the final for his ninth career world crown. As Bauge celebrated his ninth Australian Anna Meares secured her eleventh to become the most decorated women’s world champion of all time. The 31-year-old won the Keirin on the final day of competition. Along with a time trial silver and sprint bronze this edition Meares took her career tally to 26 world track medals surpassing previous record-holder Sir Chris Hoy. Back to World Cup business Between them Tina Maze, Anna Fenninger and Mikaela Shiffrin won all the female individual gold medals at the Alpine Ski World Championships earlier this month. Now fully recovered from their gold-medal winning celebrations the trio were back in World Cup action, but not all of them continued their winning ways. Fresh from winning two gold medals at the world champs in Colorado Austrian Anna Fenninger carried her winning momentum into the restart of the World Cup with success in a Giant slalom. The 25-year-old expertly navigated the 53-gate course in Maribor, Slovenia to claim her second win of the campaign. It also put her firmly at the top of the discipline standings. Slalom sensation and world champion Mikaela Shiffrin was not to be outdone on her return to world cup competition. The American dominated the field in Maribor to win her 12th career slalom world cup race – a record number of victories in the discipline by a teenager. It was the 19-year-old’s third success of the season. Tina Maze won the downhill and super combined at the world champs but her return to world cup action in front of her home support was disappointing to say the least. She crashed out of the giant slalom and the slalom and now has Fenninger just 84 points behind in the overall world cup standings. Samsonov extends record winning title tally The Table Tennis World Tour stopped off in Qatar last weekend for the third leg of a demanding year-round series. The elite players gathered in Doha with one goal – the top step of the podium. Well it was former European champion Vladimir Samsonov who reached the podium summit. The 38-year-old Belarussian bounced back from his first round elimination in Kuwait the previous week to beat Olympic bronze medallist Dimitrij Ovtcharov in the Qatar final. In a lopsided affair the former world number one beat his German rival four games to one to lift a record-extending 27th tour title. On the women’s circuit seventh seeded Romanian Elizabeta Samara shocked the star-studded field for her third career tour title. The 25-year old marked a spectacular recovery from knee surgery in November to stun third seed Han Ying of Germany four games to nothing. Judo is my life With the Judo Grand Prix season now off and running thanks to three days of battles in Dusseldorf recently, we thought we would shine our spotlight on perennial contender Ilias Iliadis and discover a little more about the Greek former Olympic and current world champion. Iliadis said: ‘‘When I was a child I was a bad, bad boy and I went into a Dojo I see this respect, respect for everyone, the coaches, respect towards the tatami. ‘‘I chose this – this is my sport, this is my life. ‘‘It is not important that you are strong or not – it’s important to lose him power (take his power away). ‘‘First you must learn respect for your opponent and then after you must win. ‘‘When I fight I want to feel him, the first time I want to feel how strong he is, how he (moves) left to right. The treadless tyres are littered with large spikes for grip and to make things even more interesting all the bikes are brake-less. Russia’s Vitaly Khomitsevich is the 2003 world champion and explains: ‘‘Ice is the same for everybody, you prepare your motorcycle for every type of ice.
