Nous étions au début du printemps et avec Claude (réalisateur émérite, régional de l'étape) nous cherchions des artistes de Marseille et de Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur ; aussi éloignés que possible des clichés rap sempiternels de la planète Mars. Très rapidement le nom de Régis Laugier et de son groupe Hifiklub est arrivé dans la conversation 2.0. Très rapidement aussi, parce que c'est mon univers musical de prédilection, j'ai plongé dans le site et la musique de Hifiklub : avec un réel plaisir d'auditeur.Hifiklub c'est du rock dans sa plus simple acception : du genre qu'on écoute en secouant la tête de bas en haut. Hifiklub c'est des larsens, un son gras et ample comme on aimait l'entendre à la sortie de l'adolescence, chez des thuriféraires du rock indé tels James Chance and the Contortions ou tout simplement Dinosaur Jr et Sonic Youth. Du gros son qui tâche, des émotions intériorisées qui éclatent brutes et des guitares qui envoient du bois. Pas étonnant en fait de se rendre compte que la petite bande est allée chercher Lee Ranaldo (de Sonic Youth) pour produire les titres de son dernier album (sorti en vinyle). Pas surprenant non plus de voir dans les récents posts de Hifiklub sur son blog, qu'ils sont encore fourrés chez Alain Johannes metteur en son des Américains de Queens of the Stone Age dans son désert de Yucca Valley près de Los Angeles. Pas étonnant ? Non. Parce que le talent du groupe mérite bien ce genre d'attention de la part de pointures du genre. Mais intriguant tout de même, parce qu'il faut une sacrée dose d'assurance pour interpeller de tels bonshommes en toute simplicité, depuis Toulon. Certes Régis Laugier a certaines facilités à forcer des portes. Gandu Circus with Q, Neel Adhikari and Jiver Singh were doing it right in Ziro, the way they do it best. Watch it to believe it!They are loud, noisy, dark, stupid and political and they are from Kolkata. They rap in Bangla. Their music is a mash up of electronica, punk, Asian dub, and a Kolkata street vibe. The performance is pimped up with a live moshing of visuals. The three member outfit has performed for the last two years all over and around, including two Europe tours and a rousing gig at the BFI theatre, London. Gandu Circus is a spectacle, born out of the controversial Award-winning film "Gandu" [which, for the record, means "asshole" / "loser" in Bengali]. The band is now working on their next album, apart from being featured on their idol band, Asian Dub Foundation's new album.Ziro is situated in Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh, 167 kms from the capital Itanagar.
